After I finished primary school, 
my father married a rich woman from Britain

who spent her time 
between the UK and Sierra Leone.

This led to my father moving 
to the UK to be with her,

It was her who told my father 
to bring me over as well, since I was deaf.

She said that I would get a better education 
and life prospects here in the UK.

My father respected her wish 
and I came over to live here.

As a result I'm fully settled here in Britain 
and use full BSL now.

That's how it went.

No, sorry, I went to a hearing school 
until I was 8

until I became deaf 
from meningitis.

I then went to deaf school 
until I was 13.

That was the end of primary education, 
so I needed a secondary school.

There are not many options in Africa,

and the mainstream schools 
were not accessible.

So the education here in Britain 
is much better,

which is why my father’s wife 
told him to bring me over here.

So I moved here at 13, 
and went to Oak Lodge deaf school.
