0:00:14.918,0:00:16.869 Thank you Sean. 0:00:16.870,0:00:20.530 My story actually starts with two films: 0:00:20.542,0:00:25.150 The first is "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham",[br]- it's a great name - 0:00:25.151,0:00:28.128 one of the most successful films[br]produced in India, 0:00:28.129,0:00:30.791 and the Oscar-winning[br]"Slumdog Millionaire," 0:00:30.792,0:00:34.452 one of the most successful films[br]produced about India. 0:00:34.453,0:00:36.522 So when we look at images of these films, 0:00:36.523,0:00:39.616 we see two very different views[br]of the same country: 0:00:39.617,0:00:43.701 one is a fairy-tale, this nation built[br]on wealth and romance, 0:00:43.702,0:00:45.764 the other is a near calamity, 0:00:45.765,0:00:48.914 a place filled with poverty[br]and corruption. 0:00:48.915,0:00:50.572 Cinema offers us insights 0:00:50.573,0:00:53.172 into how we can perceive[br]a country and its people, 0:00:53.173,0:00:56.038 who they are, what they value,[br]how they see themselves, 0:00:56.039,0:00:58.107 as well as how others see them. 0:00:58.108,0:00:59.764 And from these images, 0:00:59.765,0:01:04.456 the view of India it seems[br]is either that of a musical or a slum. 0:01:04.458,0:01:08.425 So my own journey into the world of films[br]started in the suburbs of Chicago 0:01:08.426,0:01:09.725 where I was born. 0:01:09.726,0:01:12.870 I'm the second child[br]of two Indian immigrants, 0:01:12.871,0:01:15.090 and growing up in a joint family, 0:01:15.091,0:01:18.480 I was raised on stories told to me[br]by both my grandfathers, 0:01:18.481,0:01:20.789 one of whom left school in the fourth grade 0:01:20.790,0:01:23.789 to sell timber to the British[br]during the reign of the Empire. 0:01:23.790,0:01:25.829 The other worked for a local government, 0:01:25.830,0:01:28.480 and he would travel[br]to remote areas of India 0:01:28.481,0:01:31.841 in order to implement[br]the policies of the British Raj. 0:01:31.842,0:01:36.450 So as I grew up, I remember listening[br]to these stories of India in the 1940s, 0:01:36.451,0:01:39.478 and longing for a connection[br]to my own current story, 0:01:39.479,0:01:42.855 that of America in the 1990s. 0:01:42.856,0:01:45.276 I found this through film. 0:01:45.277,0:01:48.144 Through stories that were rooted[br]in the American experience, 0:01:48.145,0:01:49.754 and offered me a perspective 0:01:49.755,0:01:53.424 that were so different[br]from the stories of my origin. 0:01:53.425,0:01:56.772 However, it was the disparity[br]between these two stories 0:01:56.773,0:01:59.175 that served as a constant reminder to me 0:01:59.176,0:02:03.485 of the hardwork and the sacrifice[br]my parents had made to come to America. 0:02:03.486,0:02:06.213 Mainly, to offer[br]their children opportunities 0:02:06.214,0:02:08.333 that they themselves never had. 0:02:08.334,0:02:12.893 America was possibility, freedom,[br]and a place to make an impact. 0:02:12.894,0:02:16.401 My brother and I were raised[br]fueled by that desire: 0:02:16.402,0:02:18.489 the desire to give something back 0:02:18.490,0:02:21.989 to a country that had given[br]so much to our family. 0:02:21.990,0:02:25.679 I took this ideology with me[br]into my first job out of college 0:02:25.680,0:02:28.166 at a prestigious magazine[br]in New York City. 0:02:28.167,0:02:29.937 It was pretty much my dream job, 0:02:29.938,0:02:33.347 writing for a publication[br]that I had idolized as a kid 0:02:33.348,0:02:36.936 for its political, environmental,[br]and issues-driven content. 0:02:36.937,0:02:39.691 It was serious journalism,[br]but made accessible, 0:02:39.692,0:02:43.249 and that felt like it was[br]a real vehicle for change in my eyes. 0:02:43.250,0:02:48.117 However, instead of the fulfillment[br]that I had expected, I felt emptiness. 0:02:48.118,0:02:51.148 It was as if I was surrounded by people[br]who were more concerned 0:02:51.149,0:02:54.534 about how they, their brand,[br]and their legacy was perceived 0:02:54.535,0:02:56.405 instead of their content. 0:02:56.406,0:02:59.610 So that serious journalism[br]that I was drawn to, 0:02:59.611,0:03:01.865 its message felt lost and diluted. 0:03:01.866,0:03:04.332 I had built up this idea in my head 0:03:04.333,0:03:08.485 about what writing about social issues[br]could do in terms of creating an impact, 0:03:08.486,0:03:10.525 and instead, I was faced with the reality 0:03:10.526,0:03:14.006 that to me, that message[br]felt so out of reach. 0:03:14.007,0:03:15.360 So I quit my job. 0:03:15.361,0:03:18.198 I moved back home[br]with my parents in Chicago 0:03:18.199,0:03:20.332 and I was completely disillusioned. 0:03:20.333,0:03:23.298 I spent months there;[br]and finally, with nothing left to do, 0:03:23.299,0:03:25.938 I booked a ticket to go to[br]a friend's wedding in India 0:03:25.939,0:03:27.248 for a two-week trip. 0:03:27.249,0:03:28.512 Little did I know 0:03:28.513,0:03:31.802 that I would find my lasting connection[br]to stories and their impact 0:03:31.803,0:03:34.036 in the country of my grandfathers' birth 0:03:34.037,0:03:36.476 and through a medium[br]that I knew nothing about: 0:03:36.477,0:03:38.099 Bollywood. 0:03:38.100,0:03:40.079 So a few days after I got to India, 0:03:40.080,0:03:44.661 through friends of friends I was invited[br]to visit a Bollywood film shoot. 0:03:44.662,0:03:47.175 And it was like nothing[br]I had ever seen before. 0:03:47.176,0:03:50.005 I remember watching[br]as actors and actresses lip-synced 0:03:50.006,0:03:52.433 to these songs that blared[br]from speakers overhead, 0:03:52.434,0:03:55.387 and they were twirling together[br]in front of a green screen, 0:03:55.388,0:03:57.232 meant not to represent India, 0:03:57.233,0:04:00.042 but the mountains of Switzerland[br]or the pyramids of Egypt. 0:04:00.043,0:04:01.076 (Laughter) 0:04:01.077,0:04:04.687 So this was a story like none[br]I had ever seen before. 0:04:04.688,0:04:07.137 It was different from the stories[br]of my grandfathers 0:04:07.138,0:04:10.490 and from the stories[br]that I sought out in Chicago. 0:04:10.491,0:04:12.949 It was just the most[br]incredible thing for me. 0:04:12.950,0:04:17.022 Seeing something so unknown to me[br]was what pulled me in, 0:04:17.023,0:04:18.547 it made me want to learn more 0:04:18.548,0:04:22.790 about what the current story of India was,[br]and what it meant to its people. 0:04:22.791,0:04:24.439 So I set up a couple of meetings 0:04:24.440,0:04:27.540 with the few people that I knew[br]who knew people in Bollywood, 0:04:27.541,0:04:30.480 and at one of them, with[br]the Confederation of Indian Industry 0:04:30.481,0:04:33.620 which is an organization that works[br]to promote industry in India, 0:04:33.621,0:04:36.680 I was asked to write a report[br]on the state of the film business 0:04:36.681,0:04:39.509 So I stayed at first for a month,[br]then for three months, 0:04:39.510,0:04:41.798 and finally, for over two years. 0:04:41.799,0:04:45.345 I worked in International Marketing[br]and Branding for Bollywood films, 0:04:45.346,0:04:49.925 setting up meetings for Indian producers[br]in LA with their American counterparts, 0:04:49.926,0:04:53.896 putting together the first official Indian[br]presence at the Cannes Film Festival, 0:04:53.897,0:04:57.191 and organizing a conference[br]where Indian producers would get to meet 0:04:57.192,0:05:00.675 with Marketing and Distribution experts[br]from all over the world. 0:05:00.676,0:05:04.361 But this was where I realized[br]my own paradox. 0:05:04.362,0:05:07.385 I had thought that by addressing[br]social issues head on 0:05:07.386,0:05:11.196 by writing about them, I would find[br]my way of creating an impact. 0:05:11.197,0:05:14.333 But instead, it was in that moment[br]of my disillusionment 0:05:14.334,0:05:18.099 that I stumbled upon the fantasies,[br]and the fairy-tales of Bollywood, 0:05:18.100,0:05:20.568 and that was where I found my meaning. 0:05:20.569,0:05:24.139 Because Bollywood films, although[br]they are musicals full of song and dance, 0:05:24.140,0:05:27.270 they are important to a country[br]of over a billion people, 0:05:27.273,0:05:32.016 and there is one very simple[br]reason as to why: they give us hope. 0:05:32.017,0:05:35.094 But this is the paradox of Indian films, 0:05:35.095,0:05:39.230 because Bollywood films mirror[br]this dream of what India wants to be, 0:05:39.231,0:05:40.699 not what it really is. 0:05:40.700,0:05:45.918 And films like Slumdog Millionaire[br]limit our view of all that India can be. 0:05:45.919,0:05:47.789 So somewhere between these two stories, 0:05:47.790,0:05:51.724 between this homegrown fantasy,[br]and this imported fiction, 0:05:51.725,0:05:54.112 there lies a third emerging story. 0:05:54.113,0:05:56.533 And that is[br]of a growing Indian middle class, 0:05:56.534,0:05:58.453 of young people who have opportunities 0:05:58.454,0:06:01.564 that they couldn't have imagined[br]for themselves a generation ago, 0:06:01.565,0:06:04.936 of women who are charting[br]their own course in their lives, 0:06:04.937,0:06:09.078 and of a country that although is[br]in a constant transition and influx 0:06:09.079,0:06:12.702 is experiencing a renewal[br]of all that it really is. 0:06:12.703,0:06:15.990 And to me, these are the stories[br]that have the most meaning, 0:06:15.991,0:06:18.690 because these are the stories[br]that allow us to break down 0:06:18.691,0:06:21.595 our stereotypes of a people and a place, 0:06:21.596,0:06:25.957 they allow us to re-examine who we are,[br]and how others see us, 0:06:25.958,0:06:29.312 but most of all, these stories[br]reinforce the idea 0:06:29.313,0:06:33.744 that our own lives are good enough to be[br]the stories that we share with others. 0:06:33.745,0:06:37.957 So it's because of my own journey[br]that I am always inspired to ask others 0:06:37.958,0:06:40.975 to look past[br]what they know of their stories, 0:06:40.976,0:06:44.201 to re-examine how they see themselves,[br]and how others see them. 0:06:44.202,0:06:47.854 For me, that involved letting go of a lot[br]of the constructs I had in my head 0:06:47.855,0:06:51.252 about what impact was[br]and where I would find it. 0:06:51.253,0:06:52.843 Because although we all have 0:06:52.844,0:06:55.753 our own versions of a path[br]that we see in front of us, 0:06:55.754,0:06:58.824 or a story that we think[br]that we've written for ourselves, 0:06:58.825,0:07:00.812 it is sometimes that unknown story, 0:07:00.813,0:07:04.940 the journey we didn't think we'd take[br]that leads to our new voice, 0:07:04.941,0:07:09.203 it's that story that has us[br]shift past the fantasy and the fiction, 0:07:09.204,0:07:12.208 and finally to focus on our own truth. 0:07:12.209,0:07:13.362 Thank you. 0:07:13.363,0:07:14.553 (Applause)
