NOTE Paragraph 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 What we stumbled across 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 at this tender age of just five and seven -- 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 we had no idea at the time -- 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:41.000 was something that was going be at the vanguard of a scientific revolution 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:44.000 occurring two decades later in the way that we look at the human brain. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:47.000 What we had stumbled across is something called positive psychology, 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:49.000 which is the reason that I'm here today 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:51.000 and the reason that I wake up every morning. NOTE Paragraph 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.000 So one of the very first things we teach people 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:47.000 in economics and statistics and business and psychology courses 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.000 is how, in a statistically valid way, do we eliminate the weirdos. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.000 How do we eliminate the outliers 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:54.000 so we can find the line of best fit? 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:56.000 Which is fantastic if I'm trying to find out 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.000 how many Advil the average person should be taking -- two. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:01.000 But if I'm interested in potential, if I'm interested in your potential, 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 or for happiness or productivity 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:05.000 or energy or creativity, 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.000 what we're doing is we're creating the cult of the average with science. NOTE Paragraph 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.000 If I asked a question like, 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:11.000 "How fast can a child learn how to read in a classroom?" 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:13.000 scientists change the answer to "How fast does the average child 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 learn how to read in that classroom?" 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:17.000 and then we tailor the class right towards the average. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:19.000 Now if you fall below the average on this curve, 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:21.000 then psychologists get thrilled, 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:24.000 because that means you're either depressed or you have a disorder, 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.000 or hopefully both. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.000 We're hoping for both because our business model is, 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.000 if you come into a therapy session with one problem, 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.000 we want to make sure you leave knowing you have 10, 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 so you keep coming back over and over again. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.000 We'll go back into your childhood if necessary, 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:38.000 but eventually what we want to do is make you normal again. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000 But normal is merely average. NOTE Paragraph 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.000 And what I posit and what positive psychology posits 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:44.000 is that if we study what is merely average, 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.000 we will remain merely average. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000 Then instead of deleting those positive outliers, 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:50.000 what I intentionally do is come into a population like this one 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.000 and say, why? 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000 Why is it that some of you are so high above the curve 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000 in terms of your intellectual ability, athletic ability, musical ability, 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.000 creativity, energy levels, 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.000 your resiliency in the face of challenge, your sense of humor? 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:03.000 Whatever it is, instead of deleting you, what I want to do is study you. 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:05.000 Because maybe we can glean information -- 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:07.000 not just how to move people up to the average, 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:10.000 but how we can move the entire average up 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:12.000 in our companies and schools worldwide. NOTE Paragraph 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.000 The reason this graph is important to me 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:16.000 is, when I turn on the news, it seems like the majority of the information 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 is not positive, in fact it's negative. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.000 Most of it's about murder, corruption, diseases, natural disasters. 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:23.000 And very quickly, my brain starts to think 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 that's the accurate ratio of negative to positive in the world. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000 What that's doing is creating something 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:29.000 called the medical school syndrome -- 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:31.000 which, if you know people who've been to medical school, 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.000 during the first year of medical training, 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:35.000 as you read through a list of all the symptoms and diseases that could happen, 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:37.000 suddenly you realize you have all of them. NOTE Paragraph 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:40.000 I have a brother in-law named Bobo -- which is a whole other story. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:43.000 Bobo married Amy the unicorn. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:46.000 Bobo called me on the phone 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 from Yale Medical School, 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:51.000 and Bobo said, "Shawn, I have leprosy." 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:53.000 (Laughter) 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:55.000 Which, even at Yale, is extraordinarily rare. 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:58.000 But I had no idea how to console poor Bobo 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000 because he had just gotten over an entire week of menopause. NOTE Paragraph 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:16.000 When I applied to Harvard, I applied on a dare. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:19.000 I didn't expect to get in, and my family had no money for college. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:21.000 When I got a military scholarship two weeks later, they allowed me to go. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 Suddenly, something that wasn't even a possibility became a reality. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000 When I went there, I assumed everyone else would see it as a privilege as well, 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 that they'd be excited to be there. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 Even if you're in a classroom full of people smarter than you, 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 you'd be happy just to be in that classroom, which is what I felt. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:35.000 But what I found there 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.000 is, while some people experience that, 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:39.000 when I graduated after my four years 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:41.000 and then spent the next eight years living in the dorms with the students -- 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:44.000 Harvard asked me to; I wasn't that guy. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:48.000 (Laughter) 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:51.000 I was an officer of Harvard to counsel students through the difficult four years. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 And what I found in my research and my teaching 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.000 is that these students, no matter how happy they were 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000 with their original success of getting into the school, 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:01.000 two weeks later their brains were focused, not on the privilege of being there, 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 nor on their philosophy or their physics. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:05.000 Their brain was focused on the competition, the workload, 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.000 the hassles, the stresses, the complaints. NOTE Paragraph 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:09.000 When I first went in there, I walked into the freshmen dining hall, 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:12.000 which is where my friends from Waco, Texas, which is where I grew up -- 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 I know some of you have heard of it. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:16.000 When they'd come to visit me, they'd look around, 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.000 they'd say, "This freshman dining hall looks like something 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.000 out of Hogwart's from the movie "Harry Potter," which it does. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:22.000 This is Hogwart's from the movie "Harry Potter" and that's Harvard. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 And when they see this, 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.000 they say, "Shawn, why do you waste your time studying happiness at Harvard? 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.000 Seriously, what does a Harvard student possibly have 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 to be unhappy about?" NOTE Paragraph 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 Embedded within that question 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:34.000 is the key to understanding the science of happiness. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 Because what that question assumes 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:39.000 is that our external world is predictive of our happiness levels, 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:41.000 when in reality, if I know everything about your external world, 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:44.000 I can only predict 10 percent of your long-term happiness. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 90 percent of your long-term happiness 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 is predicted not by the external world, 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 but by the way your brain processes the world. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.000 And if we change it, 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.000 if we change our formula for happiness and success, 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:56.000 what we can do is change the way 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 that we can then affect reality. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000 What we found is that only 25 percent of job successes 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:02.000 are predicted by I.Q. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:04.000 75 percent of job successes 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:07.000 are predicted by your optimism levels, your social support 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.000 and your ability to see stress as a challenge instead of as a threat. NOTE Paragraph 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.000 I talked to a boarding school up in New England, probably the most prestigious boarding school, 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:15.000 and they said, "We already know that. 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:18.000 So every year, instead of just teaching our students, we also have a wellness week. 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:21.000 And we're so excited. Monday night we have the world's leading expert 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 coming in to speak about adolescent depression. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:25.000 Tuesday night it's school violence and bullying. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:27.000 Wednesday night is eating disorders. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:29.000 Thursday night is elicit drug use. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:32.000 And Friday night we're trying to decide between risky sex or happiness." 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:35.000 (Laughter) 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.000 I said, "That's most people's Friday nights." 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:40.000 (Laughter) 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.000 (Applause) 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:45.000 Which I'm glad you liked, but they did not like that at all. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:47.000 Silence on the phone. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:49.000 And into the silence, I said, "I'd be happy to speak at your school, 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:52.000 but just so you know, that's not a wellness week, that's a sickness week. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.000 What you've done is you've outlined all the negative things that can happen, 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:56.000 but not talked about the positive." NOTE Paragraph 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:58.000 The absence of disease is not health. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:00.000 Here's how we get to health: 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:03.000 We need to reverse the formula for happiness and success. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:05.000 In the last three years, I've traveled to 45 different countries, 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:07.000 working with schools and companies 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.000 in the midst of an economic downturn. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 And what I found is that most companies and schools 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:13.000 follow a formula for success, which is this: 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.000 If I work harder, I'll be more successful. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:18.000 And if I'm more successful, then I'll be happier. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.000 That undergirds most of our parenting styles, our managing styles, 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:22.000 the way that we motivate our behavior. NOTE Paragraph 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:25.000 And the problem is it's scientifically broken and backwards for two reasons. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:28.000 First, every time your brain has a success, 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:30.000 you just changed the goalpost of what success looked like. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:32.000 You got good grades, now you have to get better grades, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:34.000 you got into a good school and after you get into a better school, 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.000 you got a good job, now you have to get a better job, 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.000 you hit your sales target, we're going to change your sales target. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:41.000 And if happiness is on the opposite side of success, your brain never gets there. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:43.000 What we've done is we've pushed happiness 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:46.000 over the cognitive horizon as a society. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:48.000 And that's because we think we have to be successful, 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000 then we'll be happier. NOTE Paragraph 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000 But the real problem is our brains work in the opposite order. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.000 If you can raise somebody's level of positivity in the present, 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:58.000 then their brain experiences what we now call a happiness advantage, 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:00.000 which is your brain at positive 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.000 performs significantly better 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:04.000 than it does at negative, neutral or stressed. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.000 Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise. 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:09.000 In fact, what we've found 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:11.000 is that every single business outcome improves. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:13.000 Your brain at positive is 31 percent more productive 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:16.000 than your brain at negative, neutral or stressed. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:18.000 You're 37 percent better at sales. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.000 Doctors are 19 percent faster, more accurate 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.000 at coming up with the correct diagnosis 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:24.000 when positive instead of negative, neutral or stressed. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:26.000 Which means we can reverse the formula. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:29.000 If we can find a way of becoming positive in the present, 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:31.000 then our brains work even more successfully 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:34.000 as we're able to work harder, faster and more intelligently. NOTE Paragraph 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:37.000 What we need to be able to do is to reverse this formula 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.000 so we can start to see what our brains are actually capable of. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:41.000 Because dopamine, which floods into your system when you're positive, 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:43.000 has two functions. 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:45.000 Not only does it make you happier, 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.000 it turns on all of the learning centers in your brain 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:50.000 allowing you to adapt to the world in a different way.
