0:00:07.279,0:00:11.029 Hello and welcome to the Natural World Facts Awareness Project. 0:00:11.388,0:00:13.729 A new series in which I’ll be explaining 0:00:13.779,0:00:17.230 the importance of wildlife conservation and[br]what you can do to help. 0:00:17.932,0:00:20.320 In this video, I’m joined by Alex Collins, 0:00:20.445,0:00:23.085 a fellow YouTube wildlife[br]enthusiast and biologist 0:00:23.120,0:00:25.109 at the University of Bristol. 0:00:25.339,0:00:26.759 His channel is linked below, 0:00:26.759,0:00:28.079 I recommend you check it out 0:00:28.399,0:00:30.810 for videos on some of the world’s[br]rarest species 0:00:31.310,0:00:33.010 and what you can do to help them. 0:00:33.721,0:00:36.220 So what is Marine Conservation? 0:00:36.346,0:00:39.999 Marine Conservation is defined as the protection[br]of marine ecosystems, 0:00:41.020,0:00:44.328 With the focus of limiting the damage caused to them by humans 0:00:44.328,0:00:46.760 and protecting threatened species. 0:00:46.760,0:00:50.660 The main threats being seen in our oceans[br]include species loss, 0:00:50.660,0:00:52.070 habitat degradation, 0:00:52.146,0:00:54.360 and changes in ecosystem function. 0:00:54.662,0:00:57.013 Human activities[br]causing a rise in extinction rates 0:00:57.650,0:01:00.514 has lead to a huge decrease in biodiversity, 0:01:00.646,0:01:03.796 particularly[br]in coral reefs, 88% of which are threatened 0:01:04.019,0:01:06.370 by excessive CO2 emissions. 0:01:06.550,0:01:10.876 These reefs are among the most important stores[br]of biodiversity on the planet. 0:01:11.581,0:01:15.343 It takes around ten thousand years for a reef to form from coral polyps, 0:01:15.401,0:01:17.401 and up to 30 million years for 0:01:17.500,0:01:19.830 a reef to fully mature, 0:01:19.836,0:01:23.792 hosting an estimated 25% of all marine life. 0:01:27.436,0:01:28.956 And yet, around the world, 0:01:29.090,0:01:31.319 coral reefs are dying, 0:01:31.399,0:01:34.030 as warming temperatures[br]and stressful conditions bleach the corals 0:01:34.079,0:01:37.059 white as they are forced to expel the colourful[br]algae 0:01:37.114,0:01:39.574 on which the coral depends for its survival. 0:01:40.789,0:01:42.752 So, why does this matter? 0:01:42.752,0:01:44.915 Why is marine conservation so important? 0:01:45.750,0:01:48.938 With the world’s oceans currently under[br]more threat than ever before, 0:01:49.339,0:01:52.519 and with half of the world’s coral reefs having died in the last 30 years, 0:01:53.062,0:01:54.840 marine conservation has never been 0:01:54.840,0:01:56.539 more important than is today. 0:01:57.389,0:01:58.760 I’ve already made some videos 0:01:58.760,0:02:00.680 explaining why[br]conservation is so important to you 0:02:00.985,0:02:03.231 and why we should save endangered species 0:02:03.950,0:02:05.960 So make sure to check those videos out after 0:02:05.960,0:02:07.079 you’ve finished watching this. 0:02:07.079,0:02:09.847 Put simply, different species rely on each[br]other for survival. 0:02:10.130,0:02:12.110 If one species is under threat, 0:02:12.110,0:02:14.480 the likelihood is that so is another[br]species. 0:02:14.780,0:02:16.220 This can have a chain reaction, until 0:02:16.220,0:02:18.870 eventually a whole ecosystem is under threat. 0:02:19.111,0:02:21.285 We need healthy ecosystems just as much as 0:02:21.360,0:02:23.000 the marine life itself, 0:02:23.190,0:02:25.540 because without them,[br]we’d have less food, less money, 0:02:25.660,0:02:28.671 and with altogether less life on our planet. 0:02:28.771,0:02:30.761 The bottom line is Earth needs healthy oceans, and it is our 0:02:31.651,0:02:33.950 responsibility to protect them. 0:02:34.210,0:02:35.930 So how can we do this? 0:02:35.930,0:02:40.190 One of the most effective methods has been[br]the setting up of marine protected areas. 0:02:40.630,0:02:43.360 This creates a much safer environment for[br]marine life, 0:02:43.590,0:02:45.279 undisturbed by the impacts of overfishing, 0:02:45.330,0:02:48.890 noise pollution from ships, and[br]other human activities. 0:02:49.780,0:02:55.740 Thankfully, biodiversity has been found to increase by 21% within marine[br]reserves like these. 0:02:55.740,0:02:57.910 We can also use artificial reefs. 0:02:57.945,0:03:01.025 These are man-made structures, built to promote marine life 0:03:01.114,0:03:02.840 and the growth of new coral. 0:03:02.976,0:03:06.461 Artificial reefs have proven successful in providing[br]a habitat for threatened wildlife, 0:03:07.513,0:03:09.900 These allow damaged ecosystems to recover, and 0:03:09.900,0:03:12.760 valuable biodiversity to regenerate. 0:03:12.760,0:03:15.732 As well as these strategies, we also need[br]to be careful in the way 0:03:15.732,0:03:18.127 we interact with the marine environment. 0:03:18.127,0:03:21.465 Active[br]demersal fishing techniques like trawling, 0:03:21.630,0:03:23.960 where a net is dragged along the bottom of[br]sea floor, 0:03:24.075,0:03:25.695 can be really destructive 0:03:25.810,0:03:30.340 as this destroy ecologically important species[br]like certain corals. 0:03:30.340,0:03:33.991 Active pelagic fishing techniques, where a[br]net is dragged through the open ocean, 0:03:34.190,0:03:35.713 can also be just as bad. 0:03:35.788,0:03:38.168 This is because it’s[br]indiscriminate, meaning that they 0:03:38.223,0:03:39.990 catch anything in their way of net, 0:03:40.005,0:03:42.316 regardless of whether the fisherman[br]want it or not. 0:03:42.500,0:03:46.503 This often leads to protected animals[br]like dolphins and turtles being injured 0:03:46.503,0:03:51.320 or killed. For every 1 kilogram of prawns[br]that are caught and sold in stores, 0:03:51.593,0:03:54.414 nine kilograms of other sea animals are caught as bycatch, 0:03:54.414,0:03:56.735 being injured or killed and then thrown away. 0:03:57.220,0:04:00.230 Marine conservation efforts have been made[br]to reduce the destruction 0:04:00.230,0:04:02.120 caused by these fishing techniques, 0:04:02.185,0:04:05.450 either by reducing the amount of time of these techniques are allowed to be used 0:04:05.910,0:04:08.365 Or making the technique itself less destructive. 0:04:08.630,0:04:11.507 One example of this, is to use specific fishing hooks which 0:04:11.950,0:04:14.773 are less likely to catch unwanted species. 0:04:14.940,0:04:17.220 Solving these problems does take[br]a lot of hard work, 0:04:17.300,0:04:19.458 but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do 0:04:19.503,0:04:21.373 if you don’t work as a conservationist. 0:04:22.048,0:04:26.080 So here are some other things that you can[br]do to help marine conservation. 0:04:26.520,0:04:29.390 Firstly, use your water supply more economically. 0:04:29.465,0:04:31.905 This will not only save you money but it will 0:04:31.980,0:04:36.743 also reduce excess runoff, containing pollutants[br]and waste into the ocean. 0:04:36.743,0:04:39.282 Secondly, use less energy in your daily life. 0:04:39.282,0:04:41.321 Higher temperatures can cause the death 0:04:41.390,0:04:44.610 of corals, rising sea levels and flooding, 0:04:44.610,0:04:48.401 and more extreme weather which can damage[br]marine ecosystems. 0:04:48.563,0:04:51.850 Many marine species also[br]rely on specific temperatures to determine 0:04:51.850,0:04:53.640 what sex they develop into. 0:04:53.860,0:04:57.008 This is called temperature-dependent sex determination, 0:04:57.080,0:05:02.450 and so by changing the temperature we can[br]throw an entire population out of balance. 0:05:02.450,0:05:04.540 You can also fish more responsibly, 0:05:04.590,0:05:07.780 or just fish less, or not at all if that is [br]an option to you. 0:05:07.880,0:05:10.230 The same goes for eating seafood. 0:05:10.400,0:05:13.001 Reducing your use of plastics is also essential. 0:05:13.001,0:05:15.436 Ingestion of microplastics (bits of plastic 0:05:15.631,0:05:19.670 which are less than 5mm across) can lead to[br]bioaccumulation. 0:05:19.690,0:05:21.658 This is where harmful substances 0:05:21.790,0:05:25.130 build up in the food chain and eventually[br]cause serious damage 0:05:25.230,0:05:27.219 to the species at the top. 0:05:27.639,0:05:29.740 There are just a few things that you should[br]consider 0:05:29.740,0:05:32.210 when trying to cause less impact to [br]marine life. 0:05:32.460,0:05:35.567 There are of course plenty[br]of other things that you can do to help. 0:05:36.050,0:05:37.600 So if you’d like to know more, 0:05:37.675,0:05:39.055 then let us know down in the comments, 0:05:39.220,0:05:41.770 so that we can make another video for you. 0:05:44.990,0:05:46.420 Thank you for watching. 0:05:46.515,0:05:49.045 Subscribe to see more[br]videos from The Awareness Project. 0:05:49.810,0:05:52.030 Hit the like button and be sure to watch our video 0:05:52.300,0:05:55.930 on the Pine Marten by following the link to Alex’s channel. 0:05:56.102,0:05:57.442 I hope you enjoy.
