0:00:07.839,0:00:11.029 Hello and welcome to the Natural World Facts Awareness Project, 0:00:11.478,0:00:13.729 a new series in which I’ll be explaining 0:00:13.779,0:00:17.230 the importance of wildlife conservation and[br]what you can do to help. 0:00:17.932,0:00:20.320 In this video, I’m joined by Alex Collins, 0:00:20.445,0:00:23.085 a fellow YouTube wildlife[br]enthusiast and biologist 0:00:23.300,0:00:25.249 at the University of Bristol. 0:00:25.339,0:00:26.759 His channel is linked below, 0:00:26.759,0:00:28.079 I recommend you check it out 0:00:28.399,0:00:30.810 for videos on some of the world’s[br]rarest species 0:00:31.310,0:00:33.010 and what you can do to help them. 0:00:33.721,0:00:36.220 So what is Marine Conservation? 0:00:36.346,0:00:39.999 Marine Conservation is defined as the protection[br]of marine ecosystems, 0:00:41.020,0:00:44.328 With the focus of limiting the damage caused to them by humans 0:00:44.328,0:00:46.760 and protecting threatened species. 0:00:46.760,0:00:50.660 The main threats being seen in our oceans[br]include species loss, 0:00:50.660,0:00:52.070 habitat degradation, 0:00:52.146,0:00:54.360 and changes in ecosystem function. 0:00:54.662,0:00:57.013 Human activities[br]causing a rise in extinction rates 0:00:57.800,0:01:00.614 has lead to a huge decrease in biodiversity, 0:01:00.746,0:01:03.796 particularly[br]in coral reefs, 88% of which are threatened 0:01:04.019,0:01:06.370 by excessive CO2 emissions. 0:01:06.550,0:01:10.876 These reefs are among the most important stores[br]of biodiversity on the planet; 0:01:11.581,0:01:15.343 it takes around ten thousand years for a reef to form from coral polyps, 0:01:15.401,0:01:17.401 and up to 30 million years for 0:01:17.500,0:01:19.830 a reef to fully mature, 0:01:20.016,0:01:24.522 hosting an estimated 25% of all marine life. 0:01:27.436,0:01:28.956 And yet, around the world, 0:01:29.090,0:01:31.319 coral reefs are dying, 0:01:31.399,0:01:34.030 as warming temperatures[br]and stressful conditions bleach the corals 0:01:34.079,0:01:37.359 white as they are forced to expel the colourful[br]algae 0:01:37.494,0:01:39.574 on which the coral depends for its survival. 0:01:40.789,0:01:43.080 So, why does this matter? 0:01:43.145,0:01:44.915 Why is marine conservation so important? 0:01:45.750,0:01:48.938 With the world’s oceans currently more under[br]threat than ever before, 0:01:48.979,0:01:52.439 and with half of 0:01:52.652,0:01:54.840 the world’s reefs having died in the last[br]30 years, Marine Conservation has never been 0:01:54.840,0:01:56.539 more important than today. 0:01:56.539,0:01:58.880 I’ve already made some videos which answer[br]these questions on my own channel, so if you’d 0:01:58.880,0:02:01.650 like to know why conservation is crucial to[br]both yourself and the environment, and why 0:02:01.650,0:02:05.960 we should save endangered species and ecosystems,[br]then make sure to check those videos out after 0:02:05.960,0:02:07.079 you’ve finished watching this. 0:02:07.079,0:02:11.020 Put simply, different species rely on each[br]other for survival. If one species is under 0:02:11.020,0:02:16.080 threat, the likelihood is that so is another[br]species. This can have a chain reaction, until 0:02:16.080,0:02:21.360 eventually a whole ecosystem is under threat.[br]We need healthy ecosystems just as much as 0:02:21.360,0:02:27.080 the marine life itself, because without them,[br]we’d have less food, less money, and less 0:02:27.080,0:02:31.851 life on our planet. The bottom line is, life[br]on Earth needs healthy oceans, and it is our 0:02:31.851,0:02:33.940 responsibility to protect them. 0:02:33.940,0:02:35.930 So how can we do this? 0:02:35.930,0:02:40.630 One of the most effective methods has been[br]the setting up of marine protected areas. 0:02:40.630,0:02:44.820 This creates a much safer environment for[br]marine life, undisturbed by the impacts of 0:02:44.820,0:02:50.840 overfishing, noise pollution from ships, and[br]other human activities. Thankfully, biodiversity 0:02:50.840,0:02:55.740 has been found to increase by 21% within marine[br]reserves like these. 0:02:55.740,0:03:00.280 We can also use artificial reefs. These are[br]man-made structures, built to promote marine 0:03:00.280,0:03:05.110 life and the growth of new coral. Artificial[br]reefs have proven successful in providing 0:03:05.110,0:03:09.900 a habitat for threatened wildlife, therefore[br]allowing damaged ecosystems to recover, and 0:03:09.900,0:03:12.760 the regeneration of valuable biodiversity[br]within reef ecosystems. 0:03:12.760,0:03:16.550 As well as these strategies, we also need[br]to be careful in the way we interact with 0:03:16.550,0:03:21.330 the marine environment. For example, active[br]demersal fishing techniques like trawling, 0:03:21.330,0:03:25.810 where a net is dragged along the bottom of[br]the ocean, can destroy the seafloor, which 0:03:25.810,0:03:30.340 often contains ecologically important plant[br]and coral species. 0:03:30.340,0:03:34.190 Active pelagic fishing techniques, where a[br]net is dragged through the open ocean, can 0:03:34.190,0:03:38.263 also be just as bad. This is because it’s[br]indiscriminate, meaning that the nets will 0:03:38.263,0:03:42.500 catch anything in their way, regardless of[br]whether or not the fisherman are looking for 0:03:42.500,0:03:46.690 it. This often leads to protected animals[br]like dolphins and turtles being injured or 0:03:46.690,0:03:51.890 even killed. For every 1 kilogram of prawns[br]that are caught and sold in stores, 9 kilograms 0:03:51.890,0:03:57.220 of other sea animals are caught as bycatch,[br]being injured or killed and then thrown away. 0:03:57.220,0:04:00.560 Marine conservation efforts have been made[br]to reduce the destruction caused by these 0:04:00.560,0:04:06.290 fishing techniques, either by reducing how[br]often they are allowed to be used, or by making 0:04:06.290,0:04:11.950 the technique itself less destructive. For[br]example, by using specific fishing hooks that 0:04:11.950,0:04:13.850 are less likely to catch unwanted species. 0:04:13.850,0:04:14.850 So there’s a small insight into just some[br]of the problems that marine conservationists 0:04:14.850,0:04:18.130 face today. Solving these problems does take[br]a lot of hard work, but that doesn’t mean 0:04:18.130,0:04:22.048 there’s nothing you can do if you don’t[br]work as a conservationist. 0:04:22.048,0:04:26.320 So here are some simple things that you can[br]do to help marine conservation. 0:04:26.320,0:04:32.440 Firstly, use your water supply more economically.[br]This will not only save you money but it will 0:04:32.440,0:04:37.120 reduce excess runoff, containing pollutants[br]and waste, into the ocean. 0:04:37.120,0:04:41.200 Secondly, use less energy in your day to day[br]life. Higher temperatures can cause the death 0:04:41.200,0:04:46.440 of corals, rising sea levels and flooding,[br]and more extreme weather which can damage 0:04:46.440,0:04:51.850 marine ecosystems. Many marine species also[br]rely on specific temperatures to determine 0:04:51.850,0:04:56.400 what sex they develop into (i.e. they have[br]temperature-dependent sex determination), 0:04:56.400,0:05:02.450 and so by changing the temperature we can[br]throw an entire population out of balance. 0:05:02.450,0:05:07.880 You can also fish responsibly, or just fish[br]less, or not at all if this is an option to 0:05:07.880,0:05:10.700 you. The same goes for eating seafood. 0:05:10.700,0:05:15.631 Reducing your use of plastics is also essential.[br]Ingestion of microplastics (bits of plastic 0:05:15.631,0:05:21.790 which are less than 5mm across) can lead to[br]bioaccumulation. This is where harmful substances 0:05:21.790,0:05:26.580 build up in the food chain and eventually[br]cause serious problems to the organisms at 0:05:26.580,0:05:27.639 the top. 0:05:27.639,0:05:31.220 There are just a few things that you should[br]consider when trying to cause less impact 0:05:31.220,0:05:35.800 to marine life. There is of course plenty[br]of other things that you can do to help, so 0:05:35.800,0:05:39.510 if you’d like to know more, then let us[br]know down in the comments, and we can make 0:05:39.510,0:05:44.990 another video for you. 0:05:44.990,0:05:49.810 Thank you for watching, subscribe to see more[br]videos from the Awareness Project.
