has the curve at the edge, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that should allow for the one-and-a-half inch diameter 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the two-by-fours. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Triple Island" is on Pier 42. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's right on the water, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on the East River. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's kind of a place between nature and the city 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that was flooded during Hurricane Sandy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Triple Island" is a three-part piece. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are three islands that are about sixteen feet in diameter, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they have 55-gallon drums underneath them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are secured, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so, if need be, these structures could float. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think that the future that we're heading towards is... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it looks very grim to me-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 more environmentally extreme, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 more politically extreme, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and more economically stratified. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Triple Island"--it is a kind of proposal for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a different way of working and living. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's thinking about, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "What do I really need?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and, "What is my life like without some of the things that I want?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're building up these three structures. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This will be a living... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is a greenhouse. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is kind of an extension of gardens, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and an area that we'll cook in, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and stuff like that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, you guys are going to be the first... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I heard that you're going to be living in here too, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is amazing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've been allowed to build here for a month, so far. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this is almost a month. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The work that I've been doing for a while now 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is kind of inventing this entire world 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that had to do with this future that was really perverse 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and also the only alternative. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The work started with smaller wearable structures, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like cocoons that could cover you at night, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you could use as clothing during the day. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They also could house water and some power. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That dystopic future--it was very sad to me. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, breaking out of that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was necessary at some point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really started to just think about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my own life and how-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 outside of this future that I was inventing-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we all had to live. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That translated into the "Flock House Project" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where three of these spherical houses 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 moved--or were choreographed--throughout the city. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When "Flock House" was in different parks in the city, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we could actually inhabit them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and stay in them overnight. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I wanted to really reflect the necessary migration 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that had to do with environmental, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 economic, and political needs to move. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [September] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 On the one hand, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I want "Triple Island" to be sculptural. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, on the other hand, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it really needs people to exist in the space 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to come alive. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's pushed in a further direction-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like closer to my personal goals with life and art-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when there's someone here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 To me, that means communally sharing resources-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's food, water, and power-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and how can that be done in a very minimal way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are my battery arrays. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have two arrays of car batteries 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that store all my solar power, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which I collect from the collectors on top of the greenhouse. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have a refrigerator here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A pot-in-pot refrigerator. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It keeps things relatively fresh. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is also my home. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I've been here since the beginning of August. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A little over a month. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a lot chillier now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [WOMAN, OFF CAMERA] You're planning on staying for how long? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [GILBERT] Through the end of the project, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is more November-ish... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 December-ish. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I think it's really important to... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Like, people were like, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Oh, it's going to get so cold." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, you know, it's going to be really important 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to experience that part of the project. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [November] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because Mary is really apocalyptic, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and imagines a world in which 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you don't have a supply chain 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in which you can get your needs... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and so she's inventing things in which 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can still live in, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like an urban habitat. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am interested in gaining 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a few more degrees of relative freedom 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from giant, like, inhuman institutions. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [MATTINGLY] Obviously, we're at a very unbalanced time right now 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as far as who has power 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and who has control-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and who doesn't. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And who doesn't have access 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and who does. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But then, the thing that I am optimistic about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is how people, I think, can work together 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a more grassroots and undercurrent way, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and really make something that's a different world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'd like to get to a future 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where we're actually living in this way, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in real space and time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the sculpture is just more of a symbol 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for this idea.
