WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 OLIVER HERRING: I like things simple. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I like to boil things down to an essence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Might have something to do with the fact that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 English is a foreign language to me and that I have to... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And as I learned English I only was able to express myself in, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in crude ways, but that forced me to make my point clear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The reason I started to knit was, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it was in reaction to the suicide of someone I very much admired 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as an artist. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well my work up to that point was very colorful and expressionistic, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I from...really one, one day to the next 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 took all color out of my work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and all of that expressiveness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and really subjected myself to this rigorous, monotonous discipline. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It wasn't a conceptual decision, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it was an emotional decision. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Knitting can be very meditative and uh, monotonous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But exactly that quality gives you time and that time was actually of, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that was the crux of the matter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I never made more than one kind of stitch. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I never got into patterning and any of this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it was never about knitting, it was about performance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Going through a certain motion repetitively, in this case, for ten years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 People only witnessed the, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the outcome of the, of the performance, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the legacy of that time spent. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And its sculpture was um, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something that kept me so isolated for so long in the studio. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Once I committed myself to a piece I had to follow it through 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which could easily take two, three months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So once I started I was locked into an idea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the only thing that could really move was my mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I felt that these early video pieces were a way 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for me to express what was going on in my mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of my first videos, EXIT, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 starts out with me sitting in the chair that I usually knit in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then it just turns into this flight of fancy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Certain fantasies that I dreamt about while I was knitting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The videos were a way for me to, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be flamboyant. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In my first few videos I am in it because I try, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I had to try stuff out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But eventually I replaced myself with other people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My thing is sort of to bring mostly strangers into the studio, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not always, very often it's friends too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But even with my friends, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there is this sort of need there to do something out of the ordinary. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't think of the people I work with as models or as actors. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They're not. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They are people who are willing to sacrifice their time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well in the end these things are collaborations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The two people that are here today are my two old reliables. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I really got to know them very well through making videos. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: Now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Actually that didn't work. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well I like this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oh that was just swell. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: I don't care too much about the medium. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't even care so much about the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I really care about the pro... the process. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: Try and get as much in your face as possible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oh this is red. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's amazing, keep going, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's a beauty. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Close your eyes for a second. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: You know these guys don't react in the way they would 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ordinarily react to a situation where they meet a stranger. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's because of, of, of the circumstances 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the eccentricity of it that it becomes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you, you, you sort of short-cut a lot of formality 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it becomes very, very soon, informal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't just mean the fact that these guys spit food dye for hours. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is a very intimate experience 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it's unusual and because you have to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 really give a part of yourself to do it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's, it's um, it's exhausting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While these two image formally or in terms of the process are similar, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the emphasis is very different. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I usually wait for a moment that is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that brings out some kind of vulnerability and it usually ha... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I, I never know when it happens, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it just happens at some point 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and there's this very personal connection there that happens 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that's what I'm after. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's this personal connection with somebody, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 some stranger in a way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The focus when I work with a person for one of these sculptures 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a very quiet focus, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is much harder to, to endure, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 especially when you do this on an ongoing basis for two or three months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think maybe the intimacy of the process 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is somewhat disturbing to me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because um, it's not the kind of intimacy that I generate when we, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when, when we make a video, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where the focus is on fun and action. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The focus when, when I work with a person 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for one of these 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sculptures is a very quiet focus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Hmm, I'm trying to match the image 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the actual place on her body. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here is um, I place this part 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I matched it against her body. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 With this figure over there I didn't have that luxury. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He came in um, usually at night because he had to work during the day. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Throughout the process when I attached the photographs 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he wasn't here at all 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I just sort of had to imagine what it would look like. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I carved the structure and then I just took it from there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 based on some photographs that I had. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 THE SUM AND ITS PARTS came about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after an accident where I slipped a disk in my neck 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I could literally not move one of my arms. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I felt the only thing I could do was work with one person 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because that seemed manageable 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 since I really couldn't maneuver around. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (MUSIC) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: Was actually quite happy that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the conditions under which I had to work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were radically altered because it made me think differently about what I could do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One guy who I had worked with in a, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a video before, every week, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 two or three times we met over the course of three months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was really an extended project. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we just improvised. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I, I decided that it might be interesting to cut his hair, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for him to shave his hair. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And um, of course he didn't want to do that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So a lot of that time it was about me trying to convince him 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that he would look much better without hair. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then in the end he uh, he, he agreed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 HERRING: Most people are much more unusual 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and complicated and eccentric 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and playful and creative, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 then they have the time to express. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Play. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a thing that we put on hold 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because we get distracted by so many other things. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have to make money. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have to pay the bills. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We grow up. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And these roles that we play, they're not real. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But after a while they become real, they become us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Play is, is sort of a reminder of what that was like to be a kid. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And um, we in the end never lose that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think it's always there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I mean you carry your past inside of you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's clear, so why should it ever disappear? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think whether it's video or performance or uh, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these sculptures, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is really the learning experience of making these things 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that give me in my life, meaning.
