[br]that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 English is a foreign language to me and [br]that I have to... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And as I learned English I only was able [br]to express myself in, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in crude ways, but that forced me to make[br]my point clear. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The reason I started to knit was, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was in reaction to the suicide of [br]someone I very much admired 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as an artist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well my work up to that point was very [br]colorful and expressionistic, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I from...really one, one day to the next 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 took all color out of my work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and all of that expressiveness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and really subjected myself to this[br]rigorous, monotonous discipline. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It wasn't a conceptual decision, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was an emotional decision. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Knitting can be very meditative and uh,[br]monotonous. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But exactly that quality gives you time [br]and that time was actually of, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that was the crux of the matter. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I never made more than one kind of stitch. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I never got into patterning and any of [br]this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because it was never about knitting, it [br]was about performance. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Going through a certain motion [br]repetitively, in this case, for ten years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 People only witnessed the, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the outcome of the, of the performance, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the legacy of that time spent. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And its sculpture was um, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 something that kept me so isolated for [br]so long in the studio. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Once I committed myself to a piece I had [br]to follow it through 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which could easily take two, three months. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So once I started I was locked into an [br]idea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the only thing that could really move[br]was my mind. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I felt that these early video pieces[br]were a way 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for me to express what was going on in my[br]mind. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One of my first videos, EXIT, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 starts out with me sitting in the chair [br]that I usually knit in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then it just turns into this flight of[br]fancy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Certain fantasies that I dreamt about [br]while I was knitting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The videos were a way for me to, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be flamboyant. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In my first few videos I am in it because [br]I try, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I had to try stuff out. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But eventually I replaced myself with [br]other people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My thing is sort of to bring mostly [br]strangers into the studio, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not always, very often it's friends too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But even with my friends, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there is this sort of need there to do [br]something out of the ordinary. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't think of the people I work with as[br]models or as actors. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They're not. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They are people who are willing to [br]sacrifice their time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well in the end these things are [br]collaborations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The two people that are here today [br]are my two old reliables. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really got to know them very well [br]through making videos. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: Now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Actually that didn't work. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well I like this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oh that was just swell. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: I don't care too much about the[br]medium. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't even care so much about the [br]object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really care about the pro... the [br]process. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: Try and get as much in your face[br]as possible. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oh this is red. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's amazing, keep going, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's a beauty. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Close your eyes for a second. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: You know these guys don't [br]react in the way they would 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ordinarily react to a situation where [br]they meet a stranger. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's because of, of, of the circumstances 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the eccentricity of it that it[br]becomes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you, you, you sort of short-cut a lot of[br]formality 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it becomes very, very soon, informal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't just mean the fact that these [br]guys spit food dye for hours. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is a very intimate experience 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because it's unusual and because you have[br]to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really give a part of yourself to do it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's, it's um, it's exhausting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 While these two image formally or in terms[br]of the process are similar, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the emphasis is very different. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I usually wait for a moment that is, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that brings out some kind of [br]vulnerability and it usually ha... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I, I never know when it happens, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it just happens at some point 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there's this very personal connection [br]there that happens 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that's what I'm after. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's this personal connection with [br]somebody, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 some stranger in a way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The focus when I work with a person [br]for one of these sculptures 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is a very quiet focus, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is much harder to, to endure, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially when you do this on an ongoing [br]basis for two or three months. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think maybe the intimacy of the process 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is somewhat disturbing to me 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because um, it's not the kind of intimacy[br]that I generate when we, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when, when we make a video, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where the focus is on fun and action. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The focus when, when I work with a person 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for one of these 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sculptures is a very quiet focus. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hmm, I'm trying to match the image 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with the actual place on her body. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here is um, I place this part 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I matched it against her body. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With this figure over there I didn't have [br]that luxury. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He came in um, usually at night because [br]he had to work during the day. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Throughout the process when I attached [br]the photographs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he wasn't here at all 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I just sort of had to imagine what [br]it would look like. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I carved the structure and then I just [br]took it from there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 based on some photographs that I had. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 THE SUM AND ITS PARTS came about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 after an accident where I slipped [br]a disk in my neck 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I could literally not move one of my [br]arms. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I felt the only thing I could do was work [br]with one person 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because that seemed manageable 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 since I really couldn't maneuver around. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (MUSIC) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: Was actually quite happy that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the conditions under which I had to work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 were radically altered because it made me [br]think differently about what I could do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One guy who I had worked with in a, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a video before, every week, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 two or three times we met over the course [br]of three months. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was really an extended project. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we just improvised. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I, I decided that it might be interesting [br]to cut his hair, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for him to shave his hair. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And um, of course he didn't want to do [br]that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So a lot of that time it was about me [br]trying to convince him 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that he would look much better without[br]hair. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And then in the end he uh, he, he agreed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 HERRING: Most people are much more [br]unusual 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and complicated and eccentric 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and playful and creative, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then they have the time to express. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Play. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a thing that we put on hold 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because we get distracted by so many other[br]things. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to make money. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to pay the bills. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We grow up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And these roles that we play, they're not [br]real. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But after a while they become real, they [br]become us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Play is, is sort of a reminder of what [br]that was like to be a kid. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And um, we in the end never lose that, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think it's always there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean you carry your past inside of you, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's clear, so why should it ever[br]disappear? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think whether it's video or performance[br]or uh, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 these sculptures, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it is really the learning experience of[br]making these things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that give me in my life, meaning.
