00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:31.009 Welcome to the Style Pile, episode number 15! 00:00:31.009 --> 00:00:38.359 So, this episode begins with a little bit of a story to explain how I came to inherit… 00:00:38.359 --> 00:00:41.340 literally hundreds of pairs of awesome tights. 00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:46.829 About 3 years ago, I found out that my uncle used to run a business that manufactured tights 00:00:46.829 --> 00:00:51.179 and sold them to department stores in Australia and in Japan. 00:00:51.179 --> 00:00:53.550 And this was about 15 years ago now, um so the business doesn’t exist anymore. 00:00:53.550 --> 00:00:59.530 Anyway, there was still a fair amount of stock leftover, um, that had been sitting around 00:00:59.530 --> 00:01:02.960 in the basement of his old house for about a decade, and he didn’t really know what 00:01:02.960 --> 00:01:07.080 to do with them all, but then he found out that I was into fashion and had a fashion 00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:11.010 blog… and he asked if I wanted to have a look at them and maybe take some and even 00:01:11.010 --> 00:01:13.750 try and sell some and make some of those cash dollars. 00:01:13.750 --> 00:01:15.990 Well, obviously, I said yes. 00:01:15.990 --> 00:01:20.970 I was super into wearing patterned tights in 2014 and this was just like some sort of 00:01:20.970 --> 00:01:23.020 amazing dream come true for me. 00:01:23.020 --> 00:01:28.970 Little did I know, however: this leftover stock would be literally hundreds pairs of 00:01:28.970 --> 00:01:29.970 tights. 00:01:29.970 --> 00:01:32.130 And because he was doing such a nice thing for me… 00:01:32.130 --> 00:01:34.800 I felt kind of obligated to take all of them. 00:01:34.800 --> 00:01:39.540 So anyway, 3 years later, after taking a few pairs that I wanted for myself, and also giving 00:01:39.540 --> 00:01:45.440 many away to family and friends… and then after also discovering that I’m really bad 00:01:45.440 --> 00:01:51.240 and impatient at selling things... well, I still have… all of these tights. 00:01:51.240 --> 00:01:55.740 And this here is only about one-third of the entire inherited collection. 00:01:55.740 --> 00:01:59.260 There are a couple more suitcases full of tights in storage right now. 00:01:59.260 --> 00:02:01.750 It’s far too many tights for one human being to deal with. 00:02:01.750 --> 00:02:06.030 Right now, I also am just not that into wearing full-length patterned tights – partly for 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:10.280 fashion reasons, but also because I don’t really like wearing things that compress and 00:02:10.280 --> 00:02:11.280 make my stomach uncomfortable. 00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.910 SO, I wanted to see if I could upcycle some of them into different fashion items, because 00:02:15.910 --> 00:02:18.200 I really love the patterns on a lot of the tights. 00:02:18.200 --> 00:02:18.740 Yep. 00:02:18.740 --> 00:02:19.260 So… 00:02:19.260 --> 00:02:21.480 The intro of this video was a little deceptive. 00:02:21.480 --> 00:02:25.380 My style pile "box" is much more than one box. 00:02:25.380 --> 00:02:30.880 It is this one box, yes, but then it’s also another box here, and several suitcases full 00:02:30.880 --> 00:02:32.170 of tights as well. 00:02:32.170 --> 00:02:33.170 Oh boy. 00:02:33.170 --> 00:02:36.830 So over the years I’ve seen a lot of youtube tutorials showing you how to turn your tights 00:02:36.830 --> 00:02:37.840 into crop tops. 00:02:37.840 --> 00:02:42.819 And I’ve always been a little bit skeptical of these tutorials, because well… firstly, 00:02:42.819 --> 00:02:47.760 they’re always done by very skinny human beings, and secondly, I didn’t think they 00:02:47.760 --> 00:02:49.480 ever looked that comfortable. 00:02:49.480 --> 00:02:54.790 So FIRST, I wanted to see if this tutorial would work for someone with just a little 00:02:54.790 --> 00:02:58.940 bit of fat on their bodies, somebody who wasn’t a size 0. 00:02:58.940 --> 00:02:59.760 i.e. me. 00:02:59.760 --> 00:03:03.880 And for reference, I’m an Australian size 12 to 14 which I think is a US 8 to 10. 00:03:03.890 --> 00:03:06.010 Anyway, here’s how that went down. 00:03:06.010 --> 00:03:08.709 So I busted a fresh pair of tights open, lay them out flat, 00:03:08.709 --> 00:03:13.400 and then I was basically just going to snip the crotch out in a triangle sorta shape like 00:03:13.400 --> 00:03:14.400 this. 00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:18.100 First I folded the tights in half lengthways so that the cutout would be symmetrical. 00:03:18.100 --> 00:03:23.780 And I also cut the toes off, so that I could put my arms through these new… leg…sleeves. 00:03:23.780 --> 00:03:24.780 Because the legs… 00:03:24.780 --> 00:03:25.780 Are now sleeves. 00:03:25.780 --> 00:03:26.850 You’ll see what I mean. 00:03:26.850 --> 00:03:28.780 And this is my first time trying it on! 00:03:28.780 --> 00:03:30.820 So this is a baby's top. 00:03:30.820 --> 00:03:31.830 [laughs] 00:03:31.830 --> 00:03:34.770 Let's see if I can get it on. 00:03:34.770 --> 00:03:38.040 [grunting] Owww! [laughs] 00:03:39.580 --> 00:03:40.880 Ehhhhhhggjkl! 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:42.180 Uh! 00:03:42.340 --> 00:03:44.160 Ohh, it's not comfortable! 00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:46.170 The sleeves are alright... 00:03:46.170 --> 00:03:47.209 [laughs] 00:03:47.209 --> 00:03:50.020 Oh look, there's ladders in it already. 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:51.020 There's ladders. 00:03:51.060 --> 00:03:51.860 Cool. 00:03:51.860 --> 00:03:52.700 Well. 00:03:52.700 --> 00:03:54.220 Where did my boobs go!? 00:03:54.220 --> 00:03:57.120 This has completely squashed my boobs out of existence. 00:03:57.130 --> 00:04:00.180 And its tight in all of the wrong places! 00:04:00.180 --> 00:04:03.020 Ah - there goes another ladder down the back. 00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:06.480 Okay, so yeah, the ladders probably could have been avoided if I'd used like a pair 00:04:06.480 --> 00:04:11.380 of leggings or something thicker... but if you've got ANY chub or boobage, it's not really 00:04:11.380 --> 00:04:12.380 gunna happen! 00:04:12.380 --> 00:04:18.139 It's just very, very, very, VERY uncomfortable. 00:04:18.139 --> 00:04:23.169 If you like tops that are extremely restrictive across your chest, then, go for it! 00:04:23.169 --> 00:04:27.949 Now to be fair, you might be like, Annika, you did it WRONG, you just need to use a bigger 00:04:27.949 --> 00:04:29.960 pair of tights and then it'll fit. 00:04:29.960 --> 00:04:32.400 So THIS pair came from a size large. 00:04:32.400 --> 00:04:37.270 It also has a less visible seam down the middle AND I also tried wearing it with a super padded 00:04:37.270 --> 00:04:39.289 bra to try and avoid pancake boobs. 00:04:39.289 --> 00:04:41.280 I'm really trying hard to make this work. 00:04:41.560 --> 00:04:46.940 And it doesn't look that bad... but I also can't really breathe and I'm super hecking 00:04:46.949 --> 00:04:47.949 uncomfortable. 00:04:47.949 --> 00:04:48.949 Hey Luci! 00:04:48.949 --> 00:04:49.949 Luci: Yes? 00:04:49.949 --> 00:04:55.600 Annika: Come give me your honest opinions on this top I just made. 00:04:55.600 --> 00:04:57.300 Luci: Ummmm... 00:04:57.300 --> 00:04:59.980 Um, it looks like a really..... 00:04:59.980 --> 00:05:01.620 Annika: What do you think about the fit? 00:05:07.320 --> 00:05:10.580 Luci: I just think... it's... [whispering]: I don't know what to say! 00:05:10.600 --> 00:05:12.860 What do YOU think about it? 00:05:13.560 --> 00:05:15.960 Annika: It's REALLY tight, I can't, I can hardly breathe. 00:05:15.970 --> 00:05:19.389 Luci: you're constantly adjusting it. 00:05:19.389 --> 00:05:23.169 It looks like a little bit of like a, of like pressure applied to it and the whole thing 00:05:23.169 --> 00:05:24.169 would just - whoop! 00:05:24.169 --> 00:05:25.169 Spring right off. 00:05:25.169 --> 00:05:26.520 Annika: [laughs] That's what it feels like. 00:05:26.520 --> 00:05:28.360 Luci: Like you'd be out in public and it'd just be like, DOINK! 00:05:28.360 --> 00:05:29.901 And it would just fly away in the wind. 00:05:29.901 --> 00:05:31.030 Annika: Like an elastic band. 00:05:31.030 --> 00:05:31.680 Luci: Yep. 00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:32.220 Annika: Ooow. 00:05:32.220 --> 00:05:33.080 I need to take it off now. 00:05:33.080 --> 00:05:33.580 [grunts] 00:05:33.580 --> 00:05:34.720 Soooo.. yeah. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:38.000 The next thing I wanted to try was turning the tights into SOCKS. 00:05:38.009 --> 00:05:42.219 And even though I'm not super into patterned tights at the moment, I'm very much liking 00:05:42.219 --> 00:05:45.029 knee-high and thigh-high socks right now. 00:05:45.029 --> 00:05:49.789 I also wanted to do this because I found out, after I got the tights, that a lot of them 00:05:49.789 --> 00:05:51.339 are child-sized. 00:05:51.339 --> 00:05:52.339 Not Annika-sized. 00:05:52.339 --> 00:05:55.789 But also the child-sized tights are really cute and have cute patterns on them and I 00:05:55.789 --> 00:05:57.430 wanna be able to do something with them. 00:05:57.430 --> 00:06:01.970 So, with that long preamble over, this is how I turned some of these tights into socks. 00:06:01.970 --> 00:06:03.249 Tutorial time! 00:06:03.249 --> 00:06:07.909 So as you can see, these child-size tights DO fit around my legs but they are not nearly 00:06:07.909 --> 00:06:08.930 long enough for me. 00:06:08.930 --> 00:06:12.050 So I’m going to turn them into knee-high socks instead. 00:06:12.050 --> 00:06:16.740 So I snipped the waist and the gusset part off, leaving me with two little sockies. 00:06:16.740 --> 00:06:17.680 And that’s it. 00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:18.280 … 00:06:18.380 --> 00:06:21.119 NAH I’m kidding, what kind of tutorial would that be?! 00:06:21.119 --> 00:06:25.009 Now the problem with just snipping them like this, and leaving it there, is that the socks 00:06:25.009 --> 00:06:26.569 will constantly fall down. 00:06:26.569 --> 00:06:28.210 They're not tight enough around the top. 00:06:28.210 --> 00:06:31.380 So what I need to do is add elastic around the top of the socks. 00:06:31.380 --> 00:06:35.419 So I put one of the socks on to see where it went up to on my leg, and then I grabbed 00:06:35.419 --> 00:06:39.289 a 1 inch wide piece of elastic and I wrapped it around this part of my leg. 00:06:39.289 --> 00:06:43.240 Then I pulled the elastic a little bit tight – not so tight that it was uncomfortable, 00:06:43.240 --> 00:06:47.659 but just so that it fit snugly – and then I cut the elastic to this length. 00:06:47.659 --> 00:06:51.779 And using this piece, I cut another piece of elastic that’s identical in length, because 00:06:51.779 --> 00:06:53.059 I'm making 2 socks. 00:06:53.059 --> 00:06:56.979 For both pieces of elastic, I folded them into a loop like this, and next I’m going 00:06:56.979 --> 00:07:01.710 to sew a zig-zag stitch over the elastic ends, connecting the loop up permanently. 00:07:01.710 --> 00:07:04.860 And I went back and forth with my zig zag a couple of times to make sure that the ends 00:07:04.860 --> 00:07:06.759 were connected super strongly. 00:07:06.759 --> 00:07:12.259 Then I turned one sock inside out… except when I did this, I was like: Oh my gosh, the 00:07:12.259 --> 00:07:17.279 rainbow on the inside of the sock is this really nice pastel colour, and I like it even 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:20.939 better than the brighter, more vibrant rainbow on the right-side of the socks. 00:07:20.939 --> 00:07:26.659 So, I then decided to make the inside-pattern of the socks the new OUTSIDE pattern, so that 00:07:26.659 --> 00:07:29.740 I would have PASTEL rainbow socks when I'm finished instead! 00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:33.849 So, this is a little bit confusing, but this pastel coloured inside is the new OUTSIDE, 00:07:33.849 --> 00:07:36.409 the new "right side" of the socks. 00:07:36.409 --> 00:07:40.559 And the vibrant side is the new INSIDE, the new "wrong side" of the socks. 00:07:40.559 --> 00:07:44.870 SO, with the socks INSIDE OUT (and this is the new inside-out), I popped the circular 00:07:44.870 --> 00:07:49.490 piece of elastic over the top, and I’m going to sew the elastic on all the way around the 00:07:49.490 --> 00:07:52.040 outside with a zig-zag stitch, like this. 00:07:53.140 --> 00:07:57.260 Singing: Sewing around the top of the sock, doop de doop de doop. 00:07:57.270 --> 00:08:01.379 While sewing, I stretched the sock and the elastic so that they would become the same 00:08:01.379 --> 00:08:04.300 length and match up all the way around the top of the sock. 00:08:04.300 --> 00:08:08.819 Now if you’re not confident with sewing stretchy materials, and just eyeballing this, 00:08:08.819 --> 00:08:13.309 then you can use the pinning-and-quartering-method to do this, and I will pop a link of an example 00:08:13.309 --> 00:08:14.699 for that in the description. 00:08:14.699 --> 00:08:18.831 To finish it off and make it look nice, I flipped the elastic down one more time, like 00:08:18.831 --> 00:08:19.831 this. 00:08:19.831 --> 00:08:22.560 And next I am going to sew a zig-zag stitch across here. 00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:26.849 However, I found it easier to sew this part if I turned the sock the RIGHT way around 00:08:26.849 --> 00:08:29.740 first, and then sew over the top of the elastic just by feel. 00:08:30.020 --> 00:08:31.180 [music] 00:08:34.600 --> 00:08:39.099 Singing, again: Sewing on around the top of the sock, doop de doop de doo, doop de doop 00:08:39.099 --> 00:08:40.099 de doop. 00:08:40.099 --> 00:08:41.510 And now, these socks are done! 00:08:41.510 --> 00:08:47.460 I also wanted to salvage the, uh… not so successful “crop tops” from before, into 00:08:47.460 --> 00:08:52.020 thigh-high socks, which I did basically by using the same method I just went over, BUT 00:08:52.020 --> 00:08:56.300 before I did that, I had to make new feet for the socks (…coz I cut them off before 00:08:56.300 --> 00:09:01.250 to make sleeves), and I did this by turning them inside out and sewing a new foot part 00:09:01.250 --> 00:09:04.180 like this, then cutting off the excess fabric from the seam. 00:09:04.180 --> 00:09:05.660 So, how did they turn out? 00:09:06.660 --> 00:09:09.260 [music plays] 00:09:29.500 --> 00:09:34.220 And now it’s time for a mini Lookbook, showing you how I styled these knee-high and thigh-high 00:09:34.230 --> 00:09:35.230 socks! 00:09:35.230 --> 00:09:39.810 …I’m not really sure what this video is anymore, it’s turned into part vlog, part 00:09:39.810 --> 00:09:43.860 fail, part tutorial and part lookbook, but I hope you’re enjoying it nonetheless! 00:09:43.860 --> 00:09:48.259 For these pink checkered thigh-high socks, I styled them with a pink top and a pinafore 00:09:48.259 --> 00:09:49.259 dress. 00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:51.630 I then wore an oversized denim jacket over the top of this. 00:09:51.630 --> 00:09:54.560 Oh, and everything else that I’m wearing here is thrifted, of course! 00:09:54.560 --> 00:10:00.290 So don’t ask me where these pieces are from 'coz I’ll be like, uhhh, they’re secondhand! 00:10:00.290 --> 00:10:03.620 Maybe go visit your local thrift store to try and find something similar! 00:10:03.620 --> 00:10:08.910 For the rainbow socks, I basically wanted to turn myself into a walking human rainbow, 00:10:08.910 --> 00:10:13.610 so I paired it with this multi-coloured, very bright windbreaker that I recently got from 00:10:13.610 --> 00:10:16.370 Depop, and some brightly-coloured shoes. 00:10:16.370 --> 00:10:21.740 I stuck to, uh, lighter, more muted colours for my top and shorts, so that the socks and 00:10:21.740 --> 00:10:26.470 jacket would remain the eye-catching pieces of this outfit and I wouldn’t totally overdo 00:10:26.470 --> 00:10:30.690 it with the colours, because these are pretty strong statement pieces on their own. 00:10:30.690 --> 00:10:34.160 Now as you probably noticed in my previous outfits, I like to match the colour of my 00:10:34.160 --> 00:10:35.649 socks to the colour of my top. 00:10:35.649 --> 00:10:40.061 Then, if I wear something that’s got a pattern all over it, like this polka dot romper, I 00:10:40.061 --> 00:10:44.339 think that the matching colour of the top and the socks pulls the outfit together really 00:10:44.339 --> 00:10:45.339 nicely. 00:10:45.339 --> 00:10:48.920 Generally, when choosing a pair of socks, I try and pair them to another colour that's 00:10:48.920 --> 00:10:50.350 already in my outfit. 00:10:50.350 --> 00:10:54.529 And finally, these floral socks were also a child-sized pair of tights that I wanted 00:10:54.529 --> 00:10:57.120 to upcycle into knee-high socks because... daisies. 00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:58.850 Daisies are cute. 00:10:58.850 --> 00:11:05.209 I paired them with this cute courdroy dress layered over a white top, and a beret, because… 00:11:05.209 --> 00:11:06.639 berets are also cute. 00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:12.100 Alright, so that’s one way to upcycle tights –and I really like how it turned out! 00:11:12.100 --> 00:11:17.389 Obviously, most of you won’t have inherited 3 suitcases full of tights, but it’s also 00:11:17.389 --> 00:11:22.850 a really good way to upcycle old tights that have a small ladder, or some holes, or some 00:11:22.850 --> 00:11:27.200 wear, or if you find tights too uncomfortable around your tummy like I do. 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:28.350 So, I hope that some of you found this helpful! 00:11:28.350 --> 00:11:30.769 And as for the remainder of these tights… well – 00:11:30.769 --> 00:11:34.880 I will keep some for myself, I'm going to turn more into socks, gunna give some more 00:11:34.880 --> 00:11:39.149 to friends, butttt I think most of them are probably going to make their way to charity 00:11:39.149 --> 00:11:40.149 stores. 00:11:40.149 --> 00:11:43.870 BUT if you guys have any other ideas of how to upcycle tights, that isn’t a totally 00:11:43.870 --> 00:11:48.560 impractical and uncomfortable crop top, I'd love to hear them!
