0:00:00.000,0:00:02.880 [intro music plays] [zipper sound effect] 0:00:02.889,0:00:04.830 Hi, my name is Annika and you're watching 0:00:04.830,0:00:09.350 Make, Thrift, Buy, a show where you guys send[br]me clothes from the internet and I attempt to re-create them! 0:00:09.350,0:00:12.570 Today’s Make, Thrift, Buy was suggested[br]by my friend Tilde who sent me a picture of 0:00:12.570,0:00:16.960 this mermaid top, originally from a shop called[br]Tokyo Hardcore, though there are various iterations 0:00:16.960,0:00:21.310 of this theme all over the internet. So, let’s[br]see if I can re-create it! So first I looked 0:00:21.310,0:00:25.079 up pictures of seashells to make a kind of[br]stencil with. I found this shell whose shape 0:00:25.079,0:00:29.109 looks similar to the one on the shirt, so[br]I copied it into Photoshop and copied it into 0:00:29.109,0:00:32.270 two different sizes because I wasn’t sure[br]what size I wanted. The shirt that I’m using 0:00:32.270,0:00:36.020 is this old crop top that I’ve had for five[br]years. I decided to use the larger shells 0:00:36.020,0:00:39.600 which I then cut out properly. Then using[br]a pencil, I marked where I wanted the top 0:00:39.600,0:00:45.649 and the bottom off the shell to be and I traced[br]the shells onto the shirt. Next up, mixing 0:00:45.649,0:00:52.649 the paints: so red + blue + white equals…horrible[br]grey, apparently. So I eventually got to a 0:00:53.579,0:00:59.539 pretty pastel purple by adding a lot more[br]red, a lot more white…more red, more white. 0:00:59.539,0:01:05.480 Yeah, alright, that’ll do. Now I’m adding[br]one part fabric medium to two parts paint. 0:01:05.480,0:01:08.659 Adding the medium helps the paint to stay[br]permanent on fabric, even when washed. Then 0:01:08.659,0:01:13.130 I put a piece of cardboard in the shirt to[br]separate the front from the back and started 0:01:13.130,0:01:19.079 painting. Wait. Wait a minute. At this point,[br]I remembered what a disaster combination cardboard 0:01:19.079,0:01:22.649 and paint were. Oh well, better late than[br]never. At least I’ve learned from my mistakes. 0:01:22.649,0:01:27.479 So I carefully replaced the cardboard inside[br]the shirt with a piece of plastic and I continued 0:01:27.479,0:01:31.950 painting my seashells on. And I finished off[br]the edges with a really fine brush and after 0:01:31.950,0:01:35.619 letting it dry overnight, and according to[br]the instructions on the fabric medium, I put 0:01:35.619,0:01:40.219 a tea towel over the prints and ironed them[br]for a good two minutes. Then, using a purple 0:01:40.219,0:01:46.579 permanent marker and a ruler, I drew some[br]dotted lines just like in the top from Tokyo 0:01:46.579,0:01:51.059 Hardcore. And I ironed this all again because[br]well, why not. To style this 0:01:52.360,0:01:55.820 [music plays] 0:01:59.400,0:02:00.960 To style this shirt, 0:02:00.960,0:02:05.000 I paired it with some ice cream earrings,[br]bright pink lipstick, some jelly shoes to give 0:02:05.009,0:02:08.450 it a beachy feel, and a long green skirt which[br]I felt kind of looked like a mermaid’s tail. 0:02:12.320,0:02:15.440 So, my conclusion? [scissor[br]cutting effect, zipper sound effect] 0:02:15.599,0:02:20.269 So I’ll admit that you probably could buy this cheaper[br]than you could make it, although obviously 0:02:20.269,0:02:23.959 I’m going to re-use all of these paints[br]and permanent markers again in new craft projects. 0:02:23.959,0:02:27.269 While yes, one of the points of this series[br]is for me to show you that you can re-create 0:02:27.269,0:02:31.160 things from the high street for a fraction[br]of the cost. Another motive of this series 0:02:31.160,0:02:35.629 is to slow down the pace of fast fashion.[br]Every new thing you buy uses up resources, 0:02:35.629,0:02:40.459 and most of the time a lot of the things you[br]buy are made in sweat shops. On that political 0:02:40.459,0:02:43.900 note, please give my video a thumbs up if[br]you liked it and subscribe to my channel and 0:02:43.900,0:02:46.900 I’ll see you all next time!
