WEBVTT 00:00:03.770 --> 00:00:07.640 Hi! Welcome to Make Thrift Buy, a show where you send me pictures of clothing that you've 00:00:07.640 --> 00:00:10.020 found on the internet, and I try to recreate them. 00:00:10.020 --> 00:00:16.049 About 2 weeks ago, Jacky Owen sent me this picture of these LED light-up shoes, and challenged 00:00:16.049 --> 00:00:20.680 me to recreate them. And at first, I was totally skeptical - I thought that you would need 00:00:20.680 --> 00:00:25.550 a degree in electrical engineering or at least some basic knowledge of how electronics work 00:00:25.550 --> 00:00:29.640 - which I don't have - to be able to recreate these. But no. No no no! Guess what? 00:00:29.640 --> 00:00:33.340 I then came up with a way of making light up shoes that doesn’t require any knowledge 00:00:33.340 --> 00:00:38.650 of electronics, that should actually be really easy…? I think? I mean - I don't want to 00:00:38.650 --> 00:00:42.800 talk too soon, because I haven't tried it out yet, but I think these are going to work 00:00:42.800 --> 00:00:44.600 really well. So - let's begin! 00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:47.050 I started out by getting myself a pair of shoes. 00:00:47.050 --> 00:00:50.630 And I didn’t own any shoes that were appropriate for this project, but I found these for $10 00:00:50.630 --> 00:00:54.710 at the thrift shop… and gave them a little clean before putting them on my table. 00:00:54.710 --> 00:00:59.239 For this project, I chose shoes that are hi-tops and have a large tongue. 00:00:59.239 --> 00:01:02.469 The first thing I did was to measure around the circumference of the shoes. 00:01:02.469 --> 00:01:07.540 This came out at 25 and a half inches, or 65 centimeters, so the lights I get will need 00:01:07.540 --> 00:01:08.719 to be at least this long. 00:01:08.719 --> 00:01:12.630 The next thing I did was to find myself some "LED strip lights". 00:01:12.630 --> 00:01:16.399 These are strips of lights with adhesive backing that you’re actually, apparently, able to 00:01:16.399 --> 00:01:19.499 cut up. Because I don’t really understand how electronics 00:01:19.499 --> 00:01:23.209 work, I made sure to get a set that already had a battery box attached, so I wouldn't 00:01:23.209 --> 00:01:27.369 have to do any connecting of wires. The strip lights are also waterproof, which 00:01:27.369 --> 00:01:31.009 I figured would be a good idea seeing as I want to put them onto shoes. 00:01:31.009 --> 00:01:36.499 Because the lights came in either 50, 100 or 150 cm, and the circumference of my shoes 00:01:36.499 --> 00:01:42.289 is 65cm, I chose the 100cm lights. And I got two sets, because I have two shoes. 00:01:42.289 --> 00:01:46.929 So, when the lights arrived, I checked that they worked – each set required 3 double A batteries. 00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:49.000 Awesome! 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:54.609 They also came with this clicker to let me change modes and colours. 00:01:54.609 --> 00:01:58.950 So now I just have to figure out the best way of getting all of this onto these shoes. 00:01:58.950 --> 00:02:02.229 So the first thing I needed to do was cut the lights down to the right size. 00:02:02.229 --> 00:02:05.709 So I looked this up in HEAPS of places whether or not you could cut these, and all the websites 00:02:05.709 --> 00:02:10.969 I found said yes, you can, but – I’m still terrified about cutting through something with wires in it. 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:12.640 So… here goes nothing. 00:02:16.040 --> 00:02:20.740 Oh thank goodness, they didn’t explode. But do they still work?? 00:02:20.740 --> 00:02:21.930 YESSSSS. 00:02:21.930 --> 00:02:28.960 ALRIGHT! So, on the inside of the shoe, I’m going to super glue the clicker down. 00:02:28.960 --> 00:02:32.520 So I basically just put a bit of super glue on the back, and I held it down onto the shoe 00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:35.330 for a couple of minutes. 00:02:35.330 --> 00:02:40.860 Now, the strip lights also have this adhesive on the back – I just have to peel the backing 00:02:40.860 --> 00:02:43.440 paper off first. I connect the lights back up to the clicker, 00:02:43.440 --> 00:02:48.120 and using both the adhesive on the back of the lights, AND some super glue to make SUPER 00:02:48.120 --> 00:02:52.120 sure that they’ll stay on, I attach the lights all the way around the base of the shoe. 00:02:55.720 --> 00:02:59.320 And once that’s done, I need to figure out what to do with this battery pack. 00:02:59.320 --> 00:03:02.960 I thread it up into the shoe like this, and I think that I’m going to make a pouch for 00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:05.440 the battery pack on the inside of shoe’s tongue. 00:03:05.440 --> 00:03:08.640 So I grab myself some fabric that’s similar to what the shoe is made out of – this is 00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:11.180 just some scrap PVC fabric that I had lying around. 00:03:11.180 --> 00:03:15.980 I draw a rectangle around my battery pack, with about an extra inch on each side and 00:03:15.980 --> 00:03:19.090 cut this out. Now I also don’t want the battery pack to 00:03:19.090 --> 00:03:22.460 be uncomfortable while I’m wearing the shoes, so I’m going to put some batting into the 00:03:22.460 --> 00:03:26.890 inside of the pouch. I used some fabric glue to stick some folded-up batting onto the back 00:03:26.890 --> 00:03:29.050 of the PVC material. 00:03:29.050 --> 00:03:33.810 Then I place this bit of fabric onto the inside of the shoe’s tongue. I use to needle and 00:03:33.810 --> 00:03:38.650 thread to sew it on down the sides like this, and then after making sure that the battery 00:03:38.650 --> 00:03:43.540 actually fits inside, I sew the bottom of the pouch down like this. 00:03:43.540 --> 00:03:47.430 And while sewing, I made sure not to stick my needle all the way through the whole shoe 00:03:47.430 --> 00:03:51.569 tongue – just through this inside layer of fabric, because I don’t want the stitches 00:03:51.569 --> 00:03:53.709 to be visible from the outside of the shoe. 00:04:02.300 --> 00:04:07.459 I then make a little closing for the pouch with another small rectangle of PVC – which 00:04:07.459 --> 00:04:14.639 I attach like this. And then I glue on some Velcro strips so that 00:04:14.650 --> 00:04:22.360 the pouch can open and close like this. Now, I just need to make this wire here a 00:04:22.360 --> 00:04:25.719 little bit less visible. So basically what I do is to cut out another 00:04:25.719 --> 00:04:31.319 strip of black PVC, wrap it around the wire, and glue it down onto the shoe, again using 00:04:31.319 --> 00:04:33.889 my good friend superglue. 00:04:33.889 --> 00:04:37.749 So – do the shoes work? 00:04:37.749 --> 00:04:43.479 [Loud dubstep music] 00:04:53.100 --> 00:05:00.820 [Grocery store sounds and shopping centre music] 00:05:00.840 --> 00:05:02.260 "hmmm, beans..." 00:05:02.280 --> 00:05:03.860 [Loud dubstep music resumes] 00:05:09.240 --> 00:05:13.520 So - my conclusion is a definite: Make! [scissor snipping sound effect] 00:05:13.550 --> 00:05:16.879 If you want light-up shoes, make these for yourself because it's actually really easy 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:18.300 and pretty cheap to do. 00:05:18.300 --> 00:05:20.000 [Dubstep music resumes] 00:05:32.880 --> 00:05:37.340 Okay, so I just want to add a little addendum to this video. So I made these shoes about 00:05:37.340 --> 00:05:43.090 a week ago now and, um, I kinda wanted to road test them and see how they lasted. And 00:05:43.090 --> 00:05:48.099 I've worn them a few times and unfortunately, while it's all good around here, the lights 00:05:48.099 --> 00:05:52.279 stopped working here. And I've figured out it's actually because 00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:58.090 of how my foot bends when I walk, it's actually kind of torn the connector between the LED 00:05:58.090 --> 00:06:01.370 lights here, and it's just with this shoe - the other one is still totally fine. 00:06:01.370 --> 00:06:05.659 So, these are actually just too cool, and I need to buy more [lights] and fix this - I 00:06:05.659 --> 00:06:11.259 know how I can fix this but it is going to require me buying more lights. But, if you 00:06:11.259 --> 00:06:14.370 are going to try this out, what I'm going to be doing is just placing this strip of 00:06:14.370 --> 00:06:19.629 lights more strategically around the shoe so that the bit that joins the different LED 00:06:19.629 --> 00:06:23.999 light sections isn't where my foot is going to be bending. OR use shoes like flatforms 00:06:23.999 --> 00:06:28.379 (creepers) whose soles won't bend at all. So I hope that's a helpful tip if you do try 00:06:28.379 --> 00:06:30.460 these out yourself. And if you do try this out then hashtag with 00:06:30.460 --> 00:06:32.610 #diyannika - because I'd absolutely LOVE to see how you go! 00:06:32.610 --> 00:06:36.179 Give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed it, and I'll see you all next time. Bye!
