0:00:03.770,0:00:07.640 Hi! Welcome to Make Thrift Buy, a show where[br]you send me pictures of clothing that you've 0:00:07.640,0:00:10.020 found on the internet, and I try to recreate[br]them. 0:00:10.020,0:00:16.049 About 2 weeks ago, Jacky Owen sent me this[br]picture of these LED light-up shoes, and challenged 0:00:16.049,0:00:20.680 me to recreate them. And at first, I was totally[br]skeptical - I thought that you would need 0:00:20.680,0:00:25.550 a degree in electrical engineering or at least[br]some basic knowledge of how electronics work 0:00:25.550,0:00:29.640 - which I don't have - to be able to recreate[br]these. But no. No no no! Guess what? 0:00:29.640,0:00:33.340 I then came up with a way of making light[br]up shoes that doesn’t require any knowledge 0:00:33.340,0:00:38.650 of electronics, that should actually be really[br]easy…? I think? I mean - I don't want to 0:00:38.650,0:00:42.800 talk too soon, because I haven't tried it[br]out yet, but I think these are going to work 0:00:42.800,0:00:44.600 really well. So - let's begin! 0:00:44.600,0:00:47.050 I started out by getting myself a pair of[br]shoes. 0:00:47.050,0:00:50.630 And I didn’t own any shoes that were appropriate[br]for this project, but I found these for $10 0:00:50.630,0:00:54.710 at the thrift shop… and gave them a little[br]clean before putting them on my table. 0:00:54.710,0:00:59.239 For this project, I chose shoes that are hi-tops[br]and have a large tongue. 0:00:59.239,0:01:02.469 The first thing I did was to measure around[br]the circumference of the shoes. 0:01:02.469,0:01:07.540 This came out at 25 and a half inches, or[br]65 centimeters, so the lights I get will need 0:01:07.540,0:01:08.719 to be at least this long. 0:01:08.719,0:01:12.630 The next thing I did was to find myself some[br]"LED strip lights". 0:01:12.630,0:01:16.399 These are strips of lights with adhesive backing[br]that you’re actually, apparently, able to 0:01:16.399,0:01:19.499 cut up.[br]Because I don’t really understand how electronics 0:01:19.499,0:01:23.209 work, I made sure to get a set that already[br]had a battery box attached, so I wouldn't 0:01:23.209,0:01:27.369 have to do any connecting of wires.[br]The strip lights are also waterproof, which 0:01:27.369,0:01:31.009 I figured would be a good idea seeing as I[br]want to put them onto shoes. 0:01:31.009,0:01:36.499 Because the lights came in either 50, 100[br]or 150 cm, and the circumference of my shoes 0:01:36.499,0:01:42.289 is 65cm, I chose the 100cm lights. And I got[br]two sets, because I have two shoes. 0:01:42.289,0:01:46.929 So, when the lights arrived, I checked that[br]they worked – each set required 3 double A batteries. 0:01:47.900,0:01:49.000 Awesome! 0:01:49.000,0:01:54.609 They also came with this clicker to let me[br]change modes and colours. 0:01:54.609,0:01:58.950 So now I just have to figure out the best[br]way of getting all of this onto these shoes. 0:01:58.950,0:02:02.229 So the first thing I needed to do was cut[br]the lights down to the right size. 0:02:02.229,0:02:05.709 So I looked this up in HEAPS of places whether[br]or not you could cut these, and all the websites 0:02:05.709,0:02:10.969 I found said yes, you can, but – I’m still[br]terrified about cutting through something with wires in it. 0:02:11.000,0:02:12.640 So… here goes nothing. 0:02:16.040,0:02:20.740 Oh thank goodness, they didn’t explode.[br]But do they still work?? 0:02:20.740,0:02:21.930 YESSSSS. 0:02:21.930,0:02:28.960 ALRIGHT! So, on the inside of the shoe, I’m[br]going to super glue the clicker down. 0:02:28.960,0:02:32.520 So I basically just put a bit of super glue[br]on the back, and I held it down onto the shoe 0:02:32.520,0:02:35.330 for a couple of minutes. 0:02:35.330,0:02:40.860 Now, the strip lights also have this adhesive[br]on the back – I just have to peel the backing 0:02:40.860,0:02:43.440 paper off first.[br]I connect the lights back up to the clicker, 0:02:43.440,0:02:48.120 and using both the adhesive on the back of[br]the lights, AND some super glue to make SUPER 0:02:48.120,0:02:52.120 sure that they’ll stay on, I attach the[br]lights all the way around the base of the shoe. 0:02:55.720,0:02:59.320 And once that’s done, I need to figure out[br]what to do with this battery pack. 0:02:59.320,0:03:02.960 I thread it up into the shoe like this, and[br]I think that I’m going to make a pouch for 0:03:02.960,0:03:05.440 the battery pack on the inside of shoe’s[br]tongue. 0:03:05.440,0:03:08.640 So I grab myself some fabric that’s similar[br]to what the shoe is made out of – this is 0:03:08.640,0:03:11.180 just some scrap PVC fabric that I had lying[br]around. 0:03:11.180,0:03:15.980 I draw a rectangle around my battery pack,[br]with about an extra inch on each side and 0:03:15.980,0:03:19.090 cut this out.[br]Now I also don’t want the battery pack to 0:03:19.090,0:03:22.460 be uncomfortable while I’m wearing the shoes,[br]so I’m going to put some batting into the 0:03:22.460,0:03:26.890 inside of the pouch. I used some fabric glue[br]to stick some folded-up batting onto the back 0:03:26.890,0:03:29.050 of the PVC material. 0:03:29.050,0:03:33.810 Then I place this bit of fabric onto the inside[br]of the shoe’s tongue. I use to needle and 0:03:33.810,0:03:38.650 thread to sew it on down the sides like this,[br]and then after making sure that the battery 0:03:38.650,0:03:43.540 actually fits inside, I sew the bottom of[br]the pouch down like this. 0:03:43.540,0:03:47.430 And while sewing, I made sure not to stick[br]my needle all the way through the whole shoe 0:03:47.430,0:03:51.569 tongue – just through this inside layer[br]of fabric, because I don’t want the stitches 0:03:51.569,0:03:53.709 to be visible from the outside of the shoe. 0:04:02.300,0:04:07.459 I then make a little closing for the pouch[br]with another small rectangle of PVC – which 0:04:07.459,0:04:14.639 I attach like this.[br]And then I glue on some Velcro strips so that 0:04:14.650,0:04:22.360 the pouch can open and close like this.[br]Now, I just need to make this wire here a 0:04:22.360,0:04:25.719 little bit less visible.[br]So basically what I do is to cut out another 0:04:25.719,0:04:31.319 strip of black PVC, wrap it around the wire,[br]and glue it down onto the shoe, again using 0:04:31.319,0:04:33.889 my good friend superglue. 0:04:33.889,0:04:37.749 So – do the shoes work? 0:04:37.749,0:04:43.479 [Loud dubstep music] 0:04:53.100,0:05:00.820 [Grocery store sounds and shopping centre[br]music] 0:05:00.840,0:05:02.260 "hmmm, beans..." 0:05:02.280,0:05:03.860 [Loud dubstep music resumes] 0:05:09.240,0:05:13.520 So - my conclusion is a definite: Make![br][scissor snipping sound effect] 0:05:13.550,0:05:16.879 If you want light-up shoes, make these for[br]yourself because it's actually really easy 0:05:16.879,0:05:18.300 and pretty cheap to do. 0:05:18.300,0:05:20.000 [Dubstep music resumes] 0:05:32.880,0:05:37.340 Okay, so I just want to add a little addendum[br]to this video. So I made these shoes about 0:05:37.340,0:05:43.090 a week ago now and, um, I kinda wanted to[br]road test them and see how they lasted. And 0:05:43.090,0:05:48.099 I've worn them a few times and unfortunately,[br]while it's all good around here, the lights 0:05:48.099,0:05:52.279 stopped working here.[br]And I've figured out it's actually because 0:05:52.279,0:05:58.090 of how my foot bends when I walk, it's actually[br]kind of torn the connector between the LED 0:05:58.090,0:06:01.370 lights here, and it's just with this shoe[br]- the other one is still totally fine. 0:06:01.370,0:06:05.659 So, these are actually just too cool, and[br]I need to buy more [lights] and fix this - I 0:06:05.659,0:06:11.259 know how I can fix this but it is going to[br]require me buying more lights. But, if you 0:06:11.259,0:06:14.370 are going to try this out, what I'm going[br]to be doing is just placing this strip of 0:06:14.370,0:06:19.629 lights more strategically around the shoe[br]so that the bit that joins the different LED 0:06:19.629,0:06:23.999 light sections isn't where my foot is going[br]to be bending. OR use shoes like flatforms 0:06:23.999,0:06:28.379 (creepers) whose soles won't bend at all.[br]So I hope that's a helpful tip if you do try 0:06:28.379,0:06:30.460 these out yourself.[br]And if you do try this out then hashtag with 0:06:30.460,0:06:32.610 #diyannika - because I'd absolutely LOVE to[br]see how you go! 0:06:32.610,0:06:36.179 Give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed[br]it, and I'll see you all next time. Bye!
