Did you guys know that chickens
are made out of magic?
(Music)
Hey guys!
So, is a Mercedes-Benz
like a chicken
or is a chicken like a Mercades-Benz?
Confused?
Watch this.
(Music)
Its a new Mercedes-Benz ad
which features a new stabilization system
as advanced as a chicken's head.
These chickens are demonstrating
their vestibulo-ocular reflex
It's the ability that chickens use
to stabilize their vision
while their body moves.
Allow me to demonstrate.
Stare at this eye
while moving your head around in circles
like a crazy person.
What did you notice?
While your head moves every which way,
your eyes stayed
in relatively the same position.
This is how we stabilize our eyes
in order to process an image.
Light shines through our pupil
into the retina in the back of our eye,
creating a retinal image.
If our eyes move too quickly,
we do not give ourself
enough time
to process the retinal image,
therefore, giving us blurry vision.
We stabilize our vision
through maintaining our eye position
and chickens stabilize their vision
through maintaining their head position.
Chickens don't have the same
ocular motor control as us.
So, they have evolved the muscles
in their neck and their head
to stabilize what they see.
Not only do birds have stabilized heads,
but other animals do too, like cats.
It just doesn't look as cool
when you move them around,
because chickens have that long neck!
Allright, well, I'll see
you, hairy mammals, tomorrow.
