9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Fred Wilson: Beauty & Ugliness] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beauty... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beauty, beauty, beauty... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm really interested in beauty. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Venice Biennale, 2003] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm interested in beauty 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you think of beauty as 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "an ultimate visual experience." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I'm also interested in beauty 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in that it can hide meaning. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The world is complex, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and often we try to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 separate out all of these experiences. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "This is beautiful." "This is ugly." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "This is a beautiful experience--that's all it is..." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "...there is no meaning." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Or, the meaning is not important." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 People have to deal with the fact that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there is meaning in beauty-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there is meaning in ugliness. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [The Studio Museum in Harlem, 2004] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And so, in a lot of my work--if I can-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I try to bring out that tension. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The whipping post and chairs is a perfect example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because chairs are really beautiful; 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that whipping post is certainly not. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whipping post and chairs were from the first exhibition I did 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with museum collections. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was at the Maryland Historical Society in 1992. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a very traditional display in a certain way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's no manipulation of the objects 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 other than their positioning. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that changes the meaning, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or the relationship, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or how you think about them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And this is everything that I'm about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when I'm working with museums 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and quite often when I'm working in my studio. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Looking at high-end decorative arts in the chairs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the whipping post, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they have a very different history, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it relates very directly in that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 those people who sat in the chairs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 had some relationship with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 those who were on the whipping post. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Not acknowledging that things are complex-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that beauty is complex-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think that that's the problem, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that people want to do that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, I enjoy making it complex for people, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [LAUGHS] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because that's my world, you know. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [LAUGHS]
