I'm not thin enough, 00:05:02.072 --> 00:05:05.976 rich enough, beautiful enough, smart enough, promoted enough." 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.976 The thing that underpinned this was excruciating vulnerability, 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:14.976 this idea of, in order for connection to happen, 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.976 we have to allow ourselves to be seen, really seen. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:23.143 And you know how I feel about vulnerability. I hate vulnerability. 00:05:23.167 --> 00:05:27.976 And so I thought, this is my chance to beat it back with my measuring stick. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.976 I'm going in, I'm going to figure this stuff out, 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:34.143 I'm going to spend a year, I'm going to totally deconstruct shame, 00:05:34.167 --> 00:05:36.453 I'm going to understand how vulnerability works, 00:05:36.477 --> 00:05:38.976 and I'm going to outsmart it. 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:42.000 So I was ready, and I was really excited. 00:05:44.797 --> 00:05:46.943 As you know, it's not going to turn out well. 00:05:46.967 --> 00:05:49.479 (Laughter) 00:05:49.523 --> 00:05:50.976 You know this. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:52.976 So, I could tell you a lot about shame, 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:55.096 but I'd have to borrow everyone else's time. 00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:57.976 But here's what I can tell you that it boils down to -- 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:01.381 and this may be one of the most important things that I've ever learned 00:06:01.405 --> 00:06:03.269 in the decade of doing this research. 00:06:04.698 --> 00:06:07.976 My one year turned into six years: 00:06:08.960 --> 00:06:12.976 thousands of stories, hundreds of long interviews, focus groups. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:15.381 At one point, people were sending me journal pages 00:06:15.405 --> 00:06:17.476 and sending me their stories -- 00:06:17.501 --> 00:06:20.976 thousands of pieces of data in six years. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:22.976 And I kind of got a handle on it. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:26.747 I kind of understood, this is what shame is, this is how it works. 00:06:28.081 --> 00:06:33.976 I wrote a book, I published a theory, but something was not okay -- 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:38.000 and what it was is that, if I roughly took the people I interviewed 00:06:38.024 --> 00:06:44.881 and divided them into people who really have a sense of worthiness -- 00:06:44.944 --> 00:06:47.976 that's what this comes down to, a sense of worthiness -- 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.976 they have a strong sense of love and belonging -- 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:52.976 and folks who struggle for it, 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.920 and folks who are always wondering if they're good enough. 00:06:55.968 --> 00:06:58.206 There was only one variable that separated 00:06:58.237 --> 00:07:00.976 the people who have a strong sense of love and belonging 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 and the people who really struggle for it. 00:07:03.024 --> 00:07:06.976 And that was, the people who have a strong sense of love and belonging 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:09.976 believe they're worthy of love and belonging. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:11.976 That's it. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 They believe they're worthy. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:20.976 And to me, the hard part of the one thing that keeps us out of connection 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:23.976 is our fear that we're not worthy of connection, 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.381 was something that, personally and professionally, 00:07:26.405 --> 00:07:28.976 I felt like I needed to understand better. 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:33.976 So what I did is I took all of the interviews 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.976 where I saw worthiness, where I saw people living that way, 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:39.976 and just looked at those. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:41.976 What do these people have in common? 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:46.976 I have a slight office supply addiction, but that's another talk. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:49.976 So I had a manila folder, and I had a Sharpie, 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.650 and I was like, what am I going to call this research? 00:07:52.682 --> 00:07:55.976 And the first words that came to my mind were whole-hearted. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:59.524 These are whole-hearted people, living from this deep sense of worthiness. 00:07:59.548 --> 00:08:01.976 So I wrote at the top of the manila folder, 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:03.976 and I started looking at the data. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:10.976 In fact, I did it first in a four-day very intensive data analysis, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.576 where I went back, pulled the interviews, the stories, pulled the incidents. 00:08:14.600 --> 00:08:16.976 What's the theme? What's the pattern? 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.976 My husband left town with the kids 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:22.976 because I always go into this Jackson Pollock crazy thing, 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.976 where I'm just writing and in my researcher mode. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:30.000 And so here's what I found. 00:08:32.672 --> 00:08:35.976 What they had in common was a sense of courage. 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:39.076 And I want to separate courage and bravery for you for a minute. 00:08:39.100 --> 00:08:41.196 Courage, the original definition of courage, 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:43.458 when it first came into the English language -- 00:08:43.482 --> 00:08:46.246 it's from the Latin word cor, meaning heart -- 00:08:46.270 --> 00:08:49.277 and the original definition was to tell the story of who you are 00:08:49.301 --> 00:08:50.715 with your whole heart. 00:08:51.768 --> 00:08:56.952 And so these folks had, very simply, the courage to be imperfect. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.976 They had the compassion to be kind to themselves first and then to others, 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:04.571 because, as it turns out, 00:09:04.596 --> 00:09:06.829 we can't practice compassion with other people 00:09:06.853 --> 00:09:08.596 if we can't treat ourselves kindly. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:12.976 And the last was they had connection, and -- this was the hard part -- 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.976 as a result of authenticity, 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:18.976 they were willing to let go of who they thought they should be 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.976 in order to be who they were, which you have to absolutely do that 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:26.000 for connection. 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:32.000 The other thing that they had in common was this: 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000 They fully embraced vulnerability. 00:09:40.412 --> 00:09:47.063 They believed that what made them vulnerable made them beautiful. 00:09:50.850 --> 00:09:53.976 They didn't talk about vulnerability being comfortable, 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.976 nor did they really talk about it being excruciating -- 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:59.477 as I had heard it earlier in the shame interviewing. 00:09:59.501 --> 00:10:02.501 They just talked about it being necessary. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:08.985 They talked about the willingness to say, "I love you" first, 00:10:09.079 --> 00:10:15.976 the willingness to do something where there are no guarantees, 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:20.334 the willingness to breathe through waiting for the doctor to call 00:10:20.358 --> 00:10:21.913 after your mammogram. 00:10:23.396 --> 00:10:26.556 They're willing to invest in a relationship 00:10:26.581 --> 00:10:28.976 that may or may not work out. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:30.870 They thought this was fundamental. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:34.976 I personally thought it was betrayal. 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.976 I could not believe I had pledged allegiance to research, where our job -- 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.127 you know, the definition of research is to control and predict, 00:10:44.152 --> 00:10:48.976 to study phenomena, for the explicit reason to control and predict. 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:52.976 And now my mission to control and predict 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:56.191 had turned up the answer that the way to live is with vulnerability 00:10:56.215 --> 00:10:58.976 and to stop controlling and predicting. 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:01.976 This led to a little breakdown -- 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:05.976 (Laughter) 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:08.976 -- which actually looked more like this. 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:10.976 (Laughter) 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:12.976 And it did. 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:16.155 I call it a breakdown;
