9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today i want to talk to you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about the mathematics of love. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think we can all agree [br]that mathematicians 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are famously excellent [br]at finding love. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But it's not just because[br]of our dashing personalities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our superior conversational skills 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or our excellent pencil cases, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's also because we've done 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a lot of work into the maths 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how to find the perfect partner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in my favorite paper on the subject 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is entitled, [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Why I Don't Have a Girlfriend." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 peter backus tries to rate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 his chances at finding love 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now, peter is not a very greedy man 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of all of the available women in the UK 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all that peter's looking for is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody who lives near him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody in the right age range, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody with a university degree, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody he's likely to get on well with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody attractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody who is likely to find him attractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and comes up with an estimate of 26 women 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the whole of the UK 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's not looking very good, is it peter? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now just to put that into perspective 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's about 400 times fewer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 than the best estimates 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how many intelligent[br]extra-terrestrial life forms there are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it also gives peter a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 1 in 285,000 of bumping[br]into any one of these special ladies 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on a night out 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'd like to think that's why 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 mathematicians don't really bother 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 going on nights out anymore 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The thing is is that i personally 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 don't subscribe to such a pessimistic view 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 i know, just as well as you do, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that love doesn't really work like that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 human emotion isn't neatly ordered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 rational or easily predictable 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but i also know that that doesn't mean[br]that mathematics 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 doesn't have something it can offer us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because, love, as with most of life 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is full of patterns 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and mathematics is ultimately 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all about the study of patterns 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 pattersn from predicting the weather 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the fluctuations of the stock market 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the movement of the planets 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or the growth of cities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if we're being honest, none 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of those things are neatly ordered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or easily predictable either 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because i believe that mathematics 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is so powerful that is has the potential 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to offer us a new way of looking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at almost anything 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even something as mysterious as love 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and so, to try to persuade you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how totally, excellent, [br]and relevant mathematics is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I want to give you my top three 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 mathematically verifiable tips for love 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 okay, so, top tip #1 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how to win at online dating 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so my favorite online dating website 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is OkayCupid 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not least because it was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 started by a group of mathematicians 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now because they're mathematicians 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they have been collecting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 data on everyone whose been using 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 their site for almost a decade 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they've been trying to search 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for patterns in the way that we 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 talk about ourselves 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the way that we interact with each other 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on online dating websites 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they've come up with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 seriously interesting findings 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but my particular favorite 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is that it turns out 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that one an online dating website, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how attractive you are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 does not dictate how popular you are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and actually having people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 think that you're ugly can 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 work to your advantage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 let me show you how this works 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 okay, in a thankfully voluntary section 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you are allowed to rate how attractive people are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 between 1 and 5 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and if we compare this score 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this average score 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to how many messages a selection 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of people receive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can begin to get a sense 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how attractiveness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 links to popularity on online dating 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so this is a graph that the online 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 okay cupid guys have come up with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the important thing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to notice is that it's not totally true 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that the more attractive you are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the more messages you get 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but the question arises then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of what is it about people up here 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who are so much more popular 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 than people down here? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even though they have the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 same score of attractiveness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the reason why is that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's not just straight forward looks 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are important 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so, let me try to illustrate their findings 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with an example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you take someone like porcia di rossi 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 everybody agrees that porcia di rossi 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is a very beautiful woman 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 nobody thinks that she's ugly 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but she's not a supermodel 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you compare porcia di rossi 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to someone like sarah jessica parker 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now, a lot of people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 myself included 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 think that sarah jessica parker 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is seriously fabulous 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and possibly one of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the most beautiful creatures to have evr 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 walked the face of the earth 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but, some other people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 e.i., most of the internet 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 seem to think that she looks a bit like a horse 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now, i think that if you ask people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how attractive sarah jessica parker [br]or porcia di rossi are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you ask them to give them a score between one and five 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 i reckon that they would average out to the same score 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but the way that people would vote 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 would be dry different 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so porcia's scores would all be clustered around 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the four because everybody agrees that she's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 very beautiful 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whereas sarah jessica parker divides opinion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there a huge spread in her scores 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and actually it's this spread that counts 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's this spread that makes you more popular 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on online internet dating websites 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so what this means then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is that if some people think that [br]you're attractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you're actually better off[br]having some other people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 think that you're a massive minger 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's much better than everybody[br]thinking that you're the cute girl next door 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 i think that this makes a bit more sense 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when you think in terms of the people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who are sending these messages 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so let's say that you think somebody's attractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but you suspect that other people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 won't necessarily be that interested 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that means that there is less competition for you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that there's an extra incentive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for you to get in touch 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whereas compare that to if you think 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody is attractive but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you suspect that everybody is going 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to think they're attractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 well, why would you bother humiliating yourself 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 here's where the really interesting part comes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people choose the pictures[br]that they use on an online, dating website 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they often try to minimize the things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that they think people will find unattractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the classic example is that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people who are a little but overweight 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 deliberately choosing a very cropped phto 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or bald men for example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 deliberatly choosing pictures 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where they're wearing hats 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but this is the opposite of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what you should do if 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 want to be succesful 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you should really instead 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 play up to whatever it is that makes you different 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even if you think that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 some people will find you unattractive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because the people who fancy you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are just going to fancy you anyway 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the unimportant losers who don't 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 well, they only play out to you r advantage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, top tip #2, how to pick[br]the perfect partner 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so let's imagine then that[br]you're a roaring success 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on the dating scene 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but the question arises of how[br]do you then convert 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that success into longer term happiness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in particular, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how do you decide when is the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 right time to settle down 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now generally, it's not advisable 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to just cash in the first person 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who comes along and shows you any interest 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at all 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but, equally, you don't want to leave it 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 too long if you want to maximize your [br]chances of long term happiness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as my favorite author, jane austen put it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "an unmarried woman of seven and twenty 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can never hope to feel or 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 inspire affection again." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 laughter 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thanks, jane 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so the question is then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how do you know when is the right 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 time to settle down 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 given all the people that you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can date in your lifetime 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thankfully, there is a rather delicious bit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of mathematics that we can use to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 help us out here 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so lets imagine then, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that you start dating when you're 15 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and ideally, you'd like to be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 married by the time you're 35 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the number of people that you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 could potentially date across your lifetime 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they'll be at kind of varying levels 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of goodness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now the rules are that when you cash in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and get married 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can't look ahead and see 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what you could have had 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and equally, you can't go back 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and change your mind 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in my experience at least 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 i find that people don't typically 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like being recalled years after 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 being passed up 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for somebody else, or that's just me 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so the math says then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that what you should do 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the first 37 percent of your dating window 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you should reject everybody [br]as serious marriage potential 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then, you should pick the [br]next person who comes along 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who is better than everyone that you've seen before 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so here's the example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 now if you do
