WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Today i want to talk to you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about the mathematics of love. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think we can all agree that mathematicians 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are famously excellent at finding love. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it's not just because of our dashing personalities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our superior conversational skills 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or our excellent pencil cases, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's also because we've done 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a lot of work into the maths 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of how to find the perfect partner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in my favorite paper on the subject 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is entitled, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Why I Don't Have a Girlfriend." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 peter backus tries to rate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 his chances at finding love 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now, peter is not a very greedy man 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of all of the available women in the UK 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all that peter's looking for is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody who lives near him, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody in the right age range, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody with a university degree, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody he's likely to get on well with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody attractive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 somebody who is likely to find him attractive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and comes up with an estimate of 26 women 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the whole of the UK 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's not looking very good, is it peter? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now just to put that into perspective 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's about 400 times fewer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than the best estimates 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of how many intelligent extra-terrestrial life forms there are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it also gives peter a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 1 in 285,000 of bumping into any one of these special ladies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on a night out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'd like to think that's why 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mathematicians don't really bother 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 going on nights out anymore 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The thing is is that i personally 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 don't subscribe to such a pessimistic view 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 i know, just as well as you do, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that love doesn't really work like that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 human emotion isn't neatly ordered 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 rational or easily predictable 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but i also know that that doesn't mean that mathematics 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 doesn't have something it can offer us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because, love, as with most of life 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is full of patterns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and mathematics is ultimately 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all about the study of patterns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pattersn from predicting the weather 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the fluctuations of the stock market 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the movement of the planets 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or the growth of cities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if we're being honest, none 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of those things are neatly ordered 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or easily predictable either 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because i believe that mathematics 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is so powerful that is has the potential 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to offer us a new way of looking 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at almost anything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even something as mysterious as love 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and so, to try to persuade you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of how totally, excellent, and relevant mathematics is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I want to give you my top three 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mathematically verifiable tips for love 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 okay, so, top tip #1 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how to win at online dating 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so my favorite online dating website 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is OkayCupid 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not least because it was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 started by a group of mathematicians 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now because they're mathematicians 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they have been collecting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 data on everyone whose been using 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their site for almost a decade 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they've been trying to search 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for patterns in the way that we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 talk about ourselves 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the way that we interact with each other 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on online dating websites 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they've come up with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 seriously interesting findings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but my particular favorite 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that it turns out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that one an online dating website, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how attractive you are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 does not dictate how popular you are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and actually having people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 think that you're ugly can 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 work to your advantage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 let me show you how this works 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 okay, in a thankfully voluntary section 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you are allowed to rate how attractive people are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 between 1 and 5 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if we compare this score 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this average score 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to how many messages a selection 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of people receive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can begin to get a sense 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of how attractiveness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 links to popularity on online dating 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so this is a graph that the online 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 okay cupid guys have come up with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the important thing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to notice is that it's not totally true 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the more attractive you are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the more messages you get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the question arises then 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of what is it about people up here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who are so much more popular 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than people down here? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even though they have the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 same score of attractiveness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the reason why is that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's not just straight forward looks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that are important 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so, let me try to illustrate their findings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with an example 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you take someone like porcia di rossi 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everybody agrees that porcia di rossi 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a very beautiful woman 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nobody thinks that she's ugly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but she's not a supermodel 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you compare porcia di rossi 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to someone like sarah jessica parker 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now, a lot of people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 myself included 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 think that sarah jessica parker 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is seriously fabulous 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and possibly one of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the most beautiful creatures to have evr 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 walked the face of the earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but, some other people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 e.i., most of the internet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 seem to think that she looks a bit like a horse 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 now, i think that if you ask people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how attractive sarah jessica parker or porcia di rossi are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you ask them to give them a score between one and five 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 i reckon that they would average out to the same score 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the way that people would vote 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 would be dry different 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so porcia's scores would all be clustered around 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the four because everybody agrees that she's 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 very beautiful 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whereas sarah jessica parker divides opinion 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there a huge spread in her scores 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and actually it's this spread that counts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's this spread that makes you more popular 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on online internet dating websites 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so what this means then 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that if some people think that you're attractive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you're actually better off having some other people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 think that you're a massive minger 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's much better than everybody thinking that you're the cute girl next door 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 i think that this makes a bit more sense 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you think in terms of the people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who are sending these messages 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so let's say that you think somebody's attractive
