WEBVTT 00:00:00.034 --> 00:00:01.793 It's that time again 00:00:01.793 --> 00:00:03.336 Engines on, let's go 00:00:11.373 --> 00:00:12.544 Welcome back, everyone 00:00:12.544 --> 00:00:16.623 This is The Hull Truth episode 19 for the week of 10 February 2014 00:00:16.623 --> 00:00:20.181 The place to get your Star Citizen news fix, and a little bit of extra. 00:00:20.181 --> 00:00:21.884 Let's do the website recap 00:00:24.237 --> 00:00:26.985 There's a new poll on the website that asks is you would attend a special 00:00:26.985 --> 00:00:30.950 Star Citizen event at PAX East. The event would take place on April 10th 00:00:30.950 --> 00:00:33.889 and would not require admission to PAX East. 00:00:33.889 --> 00:00:38.805 It's not looking too good for the event, the current results are showing 64% vote no. 00:00:38.805 --> 00:00:44.314 I imagine this is a travel and/or money thing for the most part. I know that it would be for me. 00:00:44.360 --> 00:00:49.749 Star Citizen hit another milestone this week by reaching a $38 million crowdfunding goal, and in the Letter from the Chairman 00:00:49.749 --> 00:00:53.718 we unlocked the Cano system. What is in the Cano system you might ask? 00:00:53.718 --> 00:00:58.409 One inhabited planet named Carteyna, and Carteyna is a water world! 00:00:58.409 --> 00:01:04.185 We voted and it came true. I hope my Avenger nicknamed "The Gentleman Guppy" is submersible. 00:01:04.185 --> 00:01:10.559 The final Star Citizen poll ended up being so close that they're going to give us both systems. The Tevarin Ghost World 00:01:10.559 --> 00:01:15.682 and The Lost Human Colony. We'll go over the Kabal and Oretani systems when we hit that stretch goal. 00:01:15.682 --> 00:01:21.805 We also got some awesome concept art from the Banu Merchantman ship, showing how it will land and function. 00:01:21.805 --> 00:01:26.976 This is still by far my favorite ship concept. They really have created an obvious dichotomy between 00:01:26.976 --> 00:01:33.317 the human ships and the alien ships, that add to the feel of the game. I hope that continues with the new ships. 00:01:33.317 --> 00:01:37.351 The letter ends with the cryptic messagepromising that the next revealed stretch goal will help 00:01:37.351 --> 00:01:42.101 chart the course for the future of Star Citizen in a different way, and Chris says it's one that he's personally 00:01:42.101 --> 00:01:45.462 very excited about. That's foreshadowing. 00:01:45.462 --> 00:01:50.733 It makes me think we might end up with some sort of a starmap system outside of the game. 00:01:50.733 --> 00:01:57.704 There's a new lore post called, Observist Dark: Olympus, Ashana, and Nul. This is apparently a traveller's guide 00:01:57.704 --> 00:02:03.757 type of company that details interesting destinations including those of the 'dark' veriety. This guide deals with the Nul 00:02:03.757 --> 00:02:09.515 system and how it was discovered. The system was empty for centuries because none of the planets could be terraformed. 00:02:09.515 --> 00:02:17.630 The planet, Ashana, has an inordinately high gravity and that lead to creation of the planet's landing zone. "Olympus" a carrier ship 00:02:17.630 --> 00:02:26.907 that crashed on the surface of Ashana, supposingly killing everyone on board. It wasn't long before the refugees used the ship's systems to make a livable space. 00:02:26.907 --> 00:02:35.754 This ship is now the landing pad for the planet and features a mechanic, an armory, a general store, and an ex "hitter" know as Nescus that runs the place. 00:02:35.754 --> 00:02:40.322 It's quite interesting and if you want to check out more of the in-game lore go and read that. 00:02:40.322 --> 00:02:47.319 An issue of PC Games magazine released in Germany with a bunch of new concept art that we hadn't seen yet. The kind folks at CIG 00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:51.182 have put those on the website for all of us and they're really cool. 00:02:51.182 --> 00:02:57.039 One of the more interesting discoveries in this picture set is a an image of a ship, with the filename "Vanduul Harvester." 00:02:57.039 --> 00:03:04.927 It looks huge, notice those little people on the side. Very insectoid-like. I wonder just what exactly it will harvest. 00:03:04.927 --> 00:03:12.522 There's also an image of a more industrial-looking facility with the filename "Shubin mining station." Is this one of the giant mining platform 00:03:12.522 --> 00:03:15.790 ships or is it an actual space station that moves around mining stuff? 00:03:15.790 --> 00:03:17.676 I guess that would make it about the same thing. 00:03:17.676 --> 00:03:24.099 And Dateline Sesen part II is out. I really enjoyed the first one, and this one did not disappoint me. 00:03:24.099 --> 00:03:31.017 Dateline Sesen is about a behind-the-lines journalist named Ulla Yadav who's investigating big companies that may or may not be 00:03:31.017 --> 00:03:37.712 hijacking ships for profit, while posing as pirates to lay blame elsewhere. In this installment, Yadev finally gets some footage 00:03:37.712 --> 00:03:41.814 in a very exciting firefight. I won't give away the details or spoil it for you. 00:03:41.814 --> 00:03:48.931 Don't miss out on this one unless you just absolutely hate reading, or fan fiction, or sci-fi, or Star Citizen and if you hate those things 00:03:48.931 --> 00:03:52.564 why are you here? Go read it. 00:03:52.564 --> 00:03:55.782 Now we recap Wingman's Hangar. 00:03:57.121 --> 00:04:02.162 This week, Wingman was at the Star Citizen summit, all the different office teams working on Star Citizen flew to Austin this week to 00:04:02.162 --> 00:04:09.932 week-long planning session. We met a lot of folks and mostly just hear some reiteration about the systems that everyone is working on. 00:04:09.932 --> 00:04:16.264 There was a statement about other modules that they won't talk about now, and no new info was presented. 00:04:16.264 --> 00:04:22.791 The MVP of the week goes to Czar for his forum thread "Operation Pitchfork; a Forker's Tale 00:04:22.791 --> 00:04:28.658 This is a fictional narrative with an Operation Pitchfork participant. If you haven't heard of Operation Pitchfork yet, it's a player 00:04:28.658 --> 00:04:35.627 made event to invade Vanduul systems at the end of the beta, which will most likely be a suicide mission for everyone involved. 00:04:35.627 --> 00:04:38.801 You can check out both of these on the official forums. 00:04:38.801 --> 00:04:45.070 The CIG fan focus this week goes to ShaderCool for his hangar sleeping quarters concepts. 00:04:45.070 --> 00:04:50.102 Very cool, ShaderCool, thanks for making those and uh... I love the bathroom design. 00:04:50.102 --> 00:04:51.958 Let's do some forum feedback 00:04:54.097 --> 00:04:59.342 This week we have Wingman and Rob answering the questions and most of the questions are related to the summit 00:04:59.342 --> 00:05:02.733 due to the new themed Q&A format that they're going to be using. 00:05:02.733 --> 00:05:07.852 There's very little information in here that's actually related to anything new in the game, so I will be highly paraphrasing some 00:05:07.852 --> 00:05:12.632 of these although I will put text closer to what they said on the screen. 00:05:12.632 --> 00:05:16.850 "Do you have a roadmap that you can share about the general sequence of development?" 00:05:16.850 --> 00:05:22.981 Rob said, "we have all these different modules going in parallel. The summit was a chance to mix the teams together 00:05:22.981 --> 00:05:28.923 to see the big picture. We're doing FPS, dogfighting, PU, and the hangar in parallel." 00:05:28.923 --> 00:05:31.351 Anything new that you can talk about from the summit? 00:05:31.351 --> 00:05:38.350 Rob said, "Not really anything new. Chris wanted us to each have our own sense of ownership of these different systems we're working on." 00:05:38.350 --> 00:05:42.674 What was the most beneficial part of the summit in terms of moving toward the goal of release? 00:05:42.674 --> 00:05:49.761 Rob said, "Certainly face time. We have people on Skype and email all the time suddenly become faces and people 00:05:49.761 --> 00:05:53.871 and that makes a big difference. It's about everyone sharing vision at the same time. 00:05:53.871 --> 00:06:01.380 Eric said, "When you're meeting on Skype and sending out emails, there's a barrier there. Maybe they take things personally when that wasn't the intent. 00:06:01.380 --> 00:06:07.832 This allows you to become friends, and get to know the person you're talking to. In those instances you can be a little more critical or direct 00:06:07.832 --> 00:06:09.434 and they understand." 00:06:09.434 --> 00:06:14.267 How do you guys sort out conflicting thoughts about what awesomeness really means in the 'verse? 00:06:14.267 --> 00:06:17.519 Rob and Eric both said basically Chris Roberts decides that. 00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:21.429 Has a decision been made about when SQ42 will be released? 00:06:21.429 --> 00:06:27.811 Rob said, "One thing we did determine is that there really isn't a good reason on a single-player game, to release alpha 00:06:27.811 --> 00:06:32.435 content. The current development plan is to release the content episodically for our backers. 00:06:32.435 --> 00:06:39.452 You will get to see a piece at a time. Each one is not going to be just like it's own mini-story though, it's still a Chris Roberts style 00:06:39.452 --> 00:06:42.686 adventure that spans multiple episodes. 00:06:42.686 --> 00:06:46.263 How do you keep in touch with so many different things? 00:06:46.263 --> 00:06:56.745 Rob said, "We had the summit. We're going to do those every 3 months and some big ones too. Day-to-day we email constantly, and use Skype and also use a bunch of collaboration tools." 00:06:56.745 --> 00:07:00.476 What kind of stuff do you do for fun when all the teams got together? 00:07:00.476 --> 00:07:08.814 Rob said, "We had interdiscipline/intercompany dinners each night, lunches too. Friday night we had a wrap party.. and some of us might have had 00:07:08.814 --> 00:07:10.653 a little more fun than others." 00:07:10.653 --> 00:07:13.828 [video with drunk rambling] 00:07:13.828 --> 00:07:18.456 That's it for forum feedback. Unfortunately there was no Ten for the Chairman this week but we sure do have 00:07:18.456 --> 00:07:20.583 some other news. 00:07:21.599 --> 00:07:26.017 In other news this week we got two games to talk about. The first up is Unclaimed World: 00:07:26.017 --> 00:07:32.169 The Lost Explorers. This one comes from Refactored Games, consisting of three programmers and one artist and recently got 00:07:32.169 --> 00:07:34.433 our first gameplay trailer. 00:07:34.433 --> 00:07:42.102 This is a story-based RTS simulation game about mankind's first attempts at stellar travel, and subsequently colonization. 00:07:42.102 --> 00:07:48.734 Earth has experienced a catastrophe and a starship with 2100 humans aboard is sent on a mission to find a suitable new home world in the 00:07:48.734 --> 00:07:56.347 Tau Ceti system. The Lost Explorers is technically episode 1 in a series of releases for the game. The devs plan to 00:07:56.347 --> 00:08:01.851 add new game features and an expanding storyline, that takes place over in-game years of time for each 00:08:01.851 --> 00:08:09.922 new episode released. From the trailer, we can tell that there are systems for hunting, gathering, defenses, building, and general survival. 00:08:09.922 --> 00:08:16.383 Each character seems to have their own statistics and equipment as well. One important note that makes me quite interested is that the devs 00:08:16.383 --> 00:08:23.465 say that the game eschews god-game tropes by playing out the player's role as a part of the community, not a commander. 00:08:23.465 --> 00:08:31.096 The characters are free individuals with their own ideas and motivations. The game was just green-lit on Steam on Feb 6. 00:08:31.096 --> 00:08:34.260 I love games like this and I hope it turns out to be a good one. 00:08:34.260 --> 00:08:40.051 I also wanted to point out another game, that's technically been playable for a while but just officially released 00:08:40.051 --> 00:08:44.853 on Steam, and it's called Horizon. I played this game the first time when it was still in beta 00:08:44.853 --> 00:08:49.651 and was quite surprised by how enjoyable it was. Horizon is a turn-based strategy game of galactic 00:08:49.651 --> 00:08:54.224 exploration and conquest where you are in control of humanity's destiny. 00:08:54.224 --> 00:09:00.927 This is really cool and it's set apart from other turn-based space games in that it's not necessarily just a 4x- 00:09:00.927 --> 00:09:06.599 There's a galaxy storyline with open ended missions on top of the 4x part of it and it has a very sandbox feel to it 00:09:06.599 --> 00:09:16.011 It has all your typical 4x mechanics but adds in tactical ship controls where you manage the movement of the ship and weapons. 00:09:16.011 --> 00:09:20.347 You can board other ships, and attack from orbital/planetary defenses as well. 00:09:20.347 --> 00:09:24.289 The alien races you run into are all fleshed-out with their own storylines too. 00:09:24.289 --> 00:09:27.676 I really enjoyed this one and am nowhere near done with it. If you're looking for 00:09:27.676 --> 00:09:34.396 more sci-fi games to play and you like 4x, you should give this one a try. But if you're looking for a really hardcore 4x 00:09:34.396 --> 00:09:36.431 you should skip this one. 00:09:36.431 --> 00:09:40.762 Let's do the r/starcitizen post of the week. 00:09:40.762 --> 00:09:47.573 This week it goes to Xerowun for his Origin 350R lego build. I've seen a lot of lego builds out there 00:09:47.573 --> 00:09:52.183 for different ships but this is by far the best one I've seen. Excellent work on that Xerowun 00:09:52.183 --> 00:09:55.595 I salute your efforts in sourcing the pieces and getting this together. 00:09:55.595 --> 00:09:59.100 One quick update for everybody, I'm currently doing my first recap video 00:09:59.100 --> 00:10:02.797 for The Next Great Starship. It will be very brief and concise, the videos 00:10:02.797 --> 00:10:07.405 of the entrants, and that will be up sometime this week so keep an eye out for that 00:10:07.405 --> 00:10:12.643 if you haven't subscribed, go ahead and do that so you'll be aware when it drops. 00:10:12.643 --> 00:10:14.344 Once again we've reached the end of another episode 00:10:14.344 --> 00:10:17.765 Thanks again for all of your support, I would not be doing this if not for the community. 00:10:17.765 --> 00:10:20.846 Until next Monday, fly low and shoot straight. 00:10:20.846 --> 00:10:24.846 Goodbye.
