are young enough to be oblivious 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about what society expects from each of us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but old enough to be aware of what's going on around you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We lived in a one-bedroom house, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all five of us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our house was amongst clusters of houses 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 made mostly of wood and corrugated metal sheets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These houses were built very close to each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 along unpaved roads. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There was little to no expectation of privacy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whenever an argument broke out next door, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you heard it all. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or, if there was a little something something going on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you would probably hear that too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Like any other kid, I learned what a family looked like. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was a man, a woman, plus a child or children. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I also learned it wasn't always that way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There were other combinations that worked just as well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There was this family of three who lived down the street. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The lady of the house was called Lenny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lenny had long black hair, often in a ponytail, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and manicured nails. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She always went out with a little makeup on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and her signature red lipstick. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lenny's other half, I don't remember much about him 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 except that he had a thing for wide sleeveless shirts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and gold chains around his neck. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Their daughter was a couple years younger than me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, everybody in the village knew Lenny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She owned and ran what was the most popular beauty salon 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in our side of town. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every time their family would walk down the roads, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they would always be greeted with smiles 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and occasionally stopped for a little chit-chat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, the interesting thing about Lenny 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that she also happened to be a transgender woman. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She exemplified 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one of the Philippines' longstanding stories about gender diversity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lenny was proof that oftentimes we think of something as strange 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 only because we're not familiar with it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or we haven't taken enough time to try and understand. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In most cultures around the world, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gender is this man-woman dichotomy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's this immovable, nonnegotiable, distinct classes of individuals. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We assign characteristics and expectations the moment a person's biological sex 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is determined. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But not all cultures are like that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not all cultures are as rigid. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many cultures don't look at genitalia primarily 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as basis for gender construction, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and some communities in North America, Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the Pacific islands, including the Philippines, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have a long history of cultural permissiveness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and accommodation of gender variances. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As you may know, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the people of the Philippines were under Spanish rule for over 300 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's from 1565 to 1898. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This explains why everyday Filipino conversations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are peppered with Spanish words, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and why so many of our last names, including mine, sound very Spanish. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This also explains the firmly entrenched influence of Catholicism. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But precolonial Philippine societies, they were mostly animists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They believed all things had a distinct spiritual essence: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 plants, animals, rocks, rivers, places. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Power resided in the spirit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whoever was able to harness that spiritual power was highly revered. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, scholars who have studied the Spanish colonial archives 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 also tell us that these early societies were largely egalitarian. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Men did not necessarily have an advantage over women. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wives were treated as companions, not slaves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And family contracts were not done without their presence and approval. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In some ways, women had the upper hand. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A woman could divorce her husband and own property under her own name, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which she kept even after marriage. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She had the prerogative to have a baby or not, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then decide the baby's name. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But the real key to the power of the precolonial Filipino woman 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was in her role as babaylan, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a collective term for shamans of various ethnic groups. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They were the community healers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 specialists in herbal and divine lore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They delivered babies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and communicated with the spirit world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They performed exorcisms 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and occasionally, and in defense of their community, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they kicked some ass. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And while the babaylan was a female role, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there were also in fact male practitioners in the spiritual realm. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Reports from early Spanish chroniclers contain several references 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to male shamans who did not conform to normative Western masculine standards. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They cross-dressed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and appeared effeminate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or sexually ambiguous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A Jesuit missionary named Francisco Alsina 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 said that one man he believed to be a shaman 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was so effeminate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that in every way he was more a woman than a man. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All the things the women did, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he performed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 such as weaving blankets, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sewing clothes and making pots. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He danced also like they did, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 never like a man, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whose stance is different. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In all, he appeared more a woman than a man. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, any other juicy details in the colonial archives? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thought you'd never ask. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As you may have deduced by now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the manner in which these precolonial societies conducted themselves 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 didn't go over so well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All the free-loving, gender-variant-permitting, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gender equality wokeness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 clashed viciously with the European sensibilities at the time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so much so that the Spanish missionaries spent the next 300 years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 trying to enforce their two-sex, two-gender model. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many Spanish friars also thought that the cross-dressing babalyan 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were either celibates like themselves 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or had deficient or malformed genitals, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this was pure speculation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Documents compiled between 1679 and 1685 called the Bolinao Manuscript, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mentions male shamans marrying women. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Boxer Codex, circa 1590, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 provide clues on the nature of the male babaylan sexuality. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It says, ordinarily they dress as women, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 act like prudes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and are so effeminate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that one who does know them would believe they are women. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Almost all are impotent for the reproductive act, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and thus they marry other males and sleep with them as men and wife 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and have carnal knowledge, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 carnal knowledge of course meaning sex. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, there's an ongoing debate in contemporary society 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about what constitutes gender and how it should be defined. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My country is no exception. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some countries like Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Nepal, and Canada 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have begun introducing nonbinary options in their legal documents 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 such as their passports and their permanent resident cards. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In all these discussions about gender, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think it's important to keep in mind 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the prevailing notions of man and woman as static genders 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 anchored strictly on biological sex are social constructs. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In my people's case, this social construct is an imposition. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was hammered into their heads over hundreds of years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 until they were convinced that their way of thinking was erroneous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But the good thing about social constructs is they can be reconstructed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to fit a time and age. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They can be reconstructed to respond 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to communities that are becoming more diverse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they can be reconstructed for a world that's starting to realize 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have so much to gain from learning and working through our differences. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I think about this subject, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think about the Filipino people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and an almost forgotten but important legacy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of gender equality and inclusivity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think about lovers who were some of the gentlest souls I had known 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but could not be fully open. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think about people who have made an impact in my life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who showed me that integrity, kindness, and strength of character 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are far better measures of judgment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 far better than things that are beyond a person's control 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 such as their skin color, their age, or their gender. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As I stand here today, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on the shoulders of people like Lenny, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I feel incredibly grateful for all who have come before me, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the ones courageous enough to put themselves out there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who live a life that is theirs and in the process made it a little easier 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for us to live our lives now. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because being yourself is revolutionary. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And to anyone reeling from forces trying to knock you down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and cram you into these neat little boxes people have decided for you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 don't break. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I see you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My ancestors see you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Their blood runs through me as they run through so many of us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You are valid, and you deserve rights and recognition just like everyone else. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
