WEBVTT 00:00:03.340 --> 00:00:07.820 Hello! Welcome back to another episode of Make Thrift Buy! This is the show where YOU 00:00:07.830 --> 00:00:13.770 send in items from high fashion, to fast fashion, or super expensive clothes from the internet 00:00:13.770 --> 00:00:16.190 and then I try my best to recreate them. 00:00:16.190 --> 00:00:21.050 Today’s suggestion comes from @bellespirit, who sent in these tops from Urban Outfitters. 00:00:21.050 --> 00:00:26.740 And as bellespirit said, they’re supposed to look DIY. Well, the thing about these tops 00:00:26.740 --> 00:00:33.280 is that they kinnnnnd of are? They HAVE been upcycled, in a sense, if in a more commercial 00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:37.240 setting. They’re from this small part of Urban Outfitters called Urban Renewal, which 00:00:37.250 --> 00:00:38.380 is actually kind of cool. 00:00:38.380 --> 00:00:42.010 While I’m glad that Urban Outfitters is doing some upcycled fashion, they’re still 00:00:42.010 --> 00:00:47.480 not all-round the most ethical company… at all – and I really don’t want to give 00:00:47.480 --> 00:00:48.480 them my money. 00:00:48.480 --> 00:00:53.109 Now this isn’t technically the normal way we do Make Thrift Buy because this is kind 00:00:53.109 --> 00:00:58.610 of an upcycled item already, but the whole point of DIY… is that you don’t have to 00:00:58.610 --> 00:01:02.640 buy it from Urban Outfitters. You can do it yourself – that’s what D I Y stands for. 00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:04.350 Alright, let’s jump right into it. 00:01:04.350 --> 00:01:09.460 So seeing as we’re doing this for ourselves, ah, we can personalise the words on the collar, 00:01:09.460 --> 00:01:10.460 to anything we want. 00:01:10.460 --> 00:01:12.790 And you all know me. I LIVE to make puns. 00:01:12.790 --> 00:01:17.060 So the words that I am going to go with are “Resting Stitch Face”. 00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:22.130 Okay so I'm jumping right in here to just mention, and this has absolutely nothing to 00:01:22.130 --> 00:01:26.190 do with sewing, at all, but for some reason the wikipedia page on "resting b&@$ face", 00:01:26.190 --> 00:01:30.460 also known as RBF - is surprisingly well-referenced? And it's referred to as a "phenomenon"? 00:01:30.460 --> 00:01:34.659 And has been studied by actual real psychologists?! Anyway I just found all of this really amusing 00:01:34.659 --> 00:01:36.180 and it's worth a read at some point – ANYWAY. 00:01:36.180 --> 00:01:40.659 Here’s a t-shirt that I thrifted for 50c to do this project on. Essentially all I wanted 00:01:40.659 --> 00:01:44.680 to do was embroider “resting stitch face” around the neckline. And if you already know 00:01:44.680 --> 00:01:48.670 how to hand-sew or how to embroider, this all might seem pretty easy and self-explanatory, 00:01:48.670 --> 00:01:54.119 but you can still stick around for the, I think, relaxing time-lapse of me embroidering 00:01:54.119 --> 00:01:55.119 the whole thing. 00:01:55.119 --> 00:01:58.770 First, I opened up a word document so I could type out my phrase, count how many letters 00:01:58.770 --> 00:02:02.680 were in it – which was 19 – and quickly make a table with 19 columns. 00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:06.620 I put one letter or a space in each column, from the start to the end of my phrase. 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:11.700 Then I halved 19 – which is 9.5 – meaning that letter in the middle of the phrase is 00:02:11.700 --> 00:02:15.680 going to be the 10th letter, with 9 letters on each side. I used this as a reference for 00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:19.540 the rest of the project to make sure my embroidered words would be centred around the collar. 00:02:19.540 --> 00:02:23.180 Then it was time to choose some colours – this whole box of embroidery threads is a hand-me-down 00:02:23.180 --> 00:02:27.060 from my mum who got really into cross-stitching for a hot second there in the 80s. But she 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:28.640 doesn't use them anymore, so they're mine now! 00:02:28.640 --> 00:02:31.849 I chose a couple of colours that I thought would go with the grey t-shirt. I ended up 00:02:31.849 --> 00:02:35.040 going with a black and a light pink, so that I could do one word in a different colour 00:02:35.040 --> 00:02:36.120 to make it stand out. 00:02:36.120 --> 00:02:39.400 Now this next step is to make sure that the phrase will be centred – of course, if you 00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:41.680 want a less-precise look, you could skip this step! 00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:45.410 Using some chalk, I made a mark exactly in the centre in the front of the collar of the 00:02:45.410 --> 00:02:49.690 t-shirt – and then, referencing back to my table from before, I drew 9 evenly-spaced 00:02:49.690 --> 00:02:54.160 lines out from that mark on the right, and then I drew 9 evenly-spaced lines out from 00:02:54.160 --> 00:02:55.160 the left. 00:02:55.160 --> 00:02:58.129 So now it’s like I kind of have my table stretched out along the collar. 00:02:58.129 --> 00:03:01.560 First, I cut some embroidery thread to about the length of my forearm. 00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:05.780 I decided to thread my needle with all 6 smaller threads of the embroidery thread – 00:03:05.780 --> 00:03:10.380 As you can see here, embroidery threads are thicker than usual threads and made up of 00:03:10.380 --> 00:03:14.340 6 smaller individual threads. And these can be separated into groups of 00:03:14.340 --> 00:03:17.650 2 or 3 threads if you want. But I'm going to use all 6. 00:03:17.650 --> 00:03:21.050 I used a needle-threader, which is THIS thing, to help me get this thick thread through an 00:03:21.050 --> 00:03:25.860 embroidery needle, left a tail dangling through the needle, and I tied a knot – 2 knots 00:03:25.860 --> 00:03:27.800 actually – in the other end. 00:03:28.890 --> 00:03:32.880 I cut the ends off from the knot and now the thread is ready to go. 00:03:32.890 --> 00:03:34.310 Next I grabbed an embroidery hoop. 00:03:34.310 --> 00:03:37.950 Now this is what you don’t want to do– don't put both layers of t-shirt through in 00:03:37.950 --> 00:03:38.950 like I did. 00:03:38.950 --> 00:03:42.250 Instead, you want to fix the hoop - which is done by just taking it apart, putting the 00:03:42.250 --> 00:03:45.939 fabric inside and then pushing it together and tightening the bolt - you want to fix 00:03:45.939 --> 00:03:49.560 the hoop onto the FRONT layer of the t-shirt only and basically it just helps keep the 00:03:49.560 --> 00:03:53.400 fabric pulled taught so you can get the cleanest-looking stitching and it's also a lot easier as well. 00:03:53.400 --> 00:03:56.540 I was able to easily move the back of the t-shirt down out of the way, and now I could 00:03:56.540 --> 00:03:57.730 begin stitching. 00:03:57.730 --> 00:04:00.709 I wanted to give the letters a “digital clock” look, so that I could pretty much 00:04:00.709 --> 00:04:02.069 use all straight stitches. 00:04:02.069 --> 00:04:05.730 So I started out with the middle letter that I marked out before, which was the “T” 00:04:05.730 --> 00:04:09.750 in the word "stitch". Now to make this embroidery stitch, I brought the needle and the thread 00:04:09.750 --> 00:04:12.990 up through the back of the t-shirt to the front. Then I brought the needle across like 00:04:12.990 --> 00:04:17.470 this, about a quarter of an inch and brought it back down through the fabric to the backside. 00:04:17.470 --> 00:04:20.890 Then I brought the needle up again, but not right next to where I just went down – I 00:04:20.890 --> 00:04:24.940 brought it up through HERE, about a quarter of an inch away from where the needle went 00:04:24.940 --> 00:04:29.010 down before. And then I brought it across and down in the same place where the needle 00:04:29.010 --> 00:04:31.410 went through EARLIER in the previous stitch. 00:04:31.410 --> 00:04:35.520 I continued sewing like this until I had a “T” made out of 4 stitches. 00:04:36.100 --> 00:04:39.570 And then I just continued along! Doing letter by letter and using the grid lines around 00:04:39.570 --> 00:04:44.040 the collar to tell me where each of my next letters would be. Heheh… tit. 00:04:44.040 --> 00:04:48.990 I'm going to make the middle word "stitch" stand out on the light grey of the t-shirt 00:04:48.990 --> 00:04:52.260 by sewing it with a black thread, while the other two words will stand out a little bit 00:04:52.260 --> 00:04:55.120 less on either side in a light pink thread. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:58.910 And the type of stitching that I’m doing here is mostly “back-stitch”, as it’s 00:04:58.910 --> 00:05:02.850 known in the embroidery world, and it’s one of the simplest embroidery stitches. 00:05:02.850 --> 00:05:06.170 When the threads started getting really short, I would bring the needle and the thread through 00:05:06.170 --> 00:05:10.890 to the insides of the t-shirt, and tie a couple of knots in the thread, then cut off the excess 00:05:10.890 --> 00:05:12.920 with some scissors, like this. 00:05:12.920 --> 00:05:16.960 I also readjusted the embroidery hoop so that the part I was working on was more or less 00:05:16.960 --> 00:05:19.660 in the middle of the hoop. 00:05:19.660 --> 00:05:23.140 [music plays] 00:06:21.820 --> 00:06:26.320 Yeah so, I reaaaally like this. It's also a really beginner-friendly project 00:06:26.330 --> 00:06:30.580 – you can do it without a sewing machine and you can do it entirely with one of the 00:06:30.580 --> 00:06:34.500 simplest embroidery stitches there is. So, is this a make, thrift or a buy? 00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:35.500 [scissor snipping, zipper sound effect] 00:06:35.500 --> 00:06:41.280 And you can also do it on an old or a thrifted t-shirt too for some upcycling bonus points! 00:06:41.280 --> 00:06:44.730 Okay, so I also wanted to announce that I’m going to be at Vidcon Australia in September! 00:06:44.730 --> 00:06:50.570 And I wanted to know if any of you guys are going!
