that related to this term 0:05:18.140,0:05:23.546 social justice and so it brought out[br]some pretty significant responses in our 0:05:23.546,0:05:25.536 community to some people in our 0:05:25.536,0:05:28.660 community if we focus on social justice 0:05:28.579,0:05:32.779 that means we're going to turn all of[br]our children into socialists who hate 0:05:32.779,0:05:36.806 white people okay this of course this 0:05:36.806,0:05:38.826 kind of response then brought out people 0:05:38.826,0:05:40.676 from the other end of the spectrum who 0:05:40.676,0:05:43.286 said if we don't 0:07:09.010,0:07:10.980 Denver Public Schools we are a 0:07:10.980,0:07:12.880 purposefully integrated school and we 0:07:12.880,0:07:14.820 mean that like in the old school way we 0:07:14.820,0:07:18.090 are 50 percent[br]of color and 50 percent white that's on 0:07:18.090,0:07:19.860 purpose and the demographics of South 0:07:19.860,0:07:22.480 East Denver allow us to do that we're 0:07:22.480,0:07:25.190 also what we call a court what we call 0:07:25.190,0:07:27.100 literally we made this up we are a core 0:07:27.100,0:07:30.320 knowledge plus school um[br]those of you who 0:07:30.320,0:07:33.390 know core knowledge if you don't know[br]core knowledge what it basically is it's 0:07:33.390,0:07:35.740 uh it's uh sequence and a scaffolded set 0:07:35.740,0:07:37.870 was now High Line High 0:08:09.469,0:08:11.359 Line has were a core knowledge plus 0:08:11.359,0:08:14.569 school because[br]we supplement our content a lot to make 0:08:14.569,0:08:19.279 sure it meets the needs of our diverse[br]learners and when Zoey got into this 0:08:19.279,0:08:21.509 westward expansion unit it was uh whole 0:08:21.509,0:08:25.509 bunch of old pioneer wagon trains river 0:08:25.509,0:08:30.959 boats trains um and that and and[br]varied that 0:08:30.959,0:08:33.139 based sort of in this manifest destiny 0:08:33.139,0:08:35.489 mentality and that is a perfectly valid 0:08:35.489,0:08:38.599 way to teach westward expansion it 0:08:38.599,0:08:41.099 really is because westward expansion was 0:08:41.099,0:08:43.329 really really good for a lot of people
