0:00:04.100,0:00:09.580 Jim: We have a monthly breakfast series about the[br]future of health and wellness. It’s about 0:00:09.580,0:00:14.230 bringing our community in to discuss and have[br]conversations about a very very important 0:00:14.230,0:00:16.370 topic - about our health in the future. 0:00:19.940,0:00:22.820 Jim: Today we had Brad McKay come in. He’s the CEO 0:00:22.830,0:00:27.160 of Healthcare Food Services.[br]Brad: We’re here at the international restaurant 0:00:27.160,0:00:31.160 at Algonquin College where the students and[br]the culinary program have served an absolutely 0:00:31.160,0:00:36.739 wonderful breakfast for the attendees. We’re here[br]talking about food, health and wellness, and 0:00:36.739,0:00:40.570 it’s part of a speaker series that has been[br]put together by Algonquin College and the 0:00:40.570,0:00:47.379 Champlain LHIN. This morning I talked about[br]healthy food in the future and I talked about three things: 0:00:47.379,0:00:51.550 How food will become healthier in the[br]future because meat consumption will go down 0:00:51.550,0:00:56.809 and it goes down as economies advance. I talked[br]about how overall caloric consumption will 0:00:56.809,0:01:00.910 go down in the future as food becomes more[br]and more expensive and the era of cheap food 0:01:00.910,0:01:05.339 is over. Thirdly, I cautioned the group to[br]think in decades rather than years because 0:01:05.339,0:01:11.100 these changes in food habits will take a long[br]time to occur. Our habits in food are deeply 0:01:11.100,0:01:16.479 rooted in evolution and demographics and culture, and a[br]quick fix isn’t in the offing, but if we 0:01:16.479,0:01:21.590 are interested in a long fix we’ll be happier[br]as a result. 0:01:21.590,0:01:25.619 Jim: From my perspective as the Dean of Hospitality,[br]“you are what you eat,” having proper 0:01:25.619,0:01:30.000 nutrition is extremely important for your[br]health and wellness. 0:01:30.000,0:01:34.009 Brad: Algonquin is playing a leading role, and the[br]whole health and wellness institute that they are 0:01:34.009,0:01:39.250 planning on I think is absolutely stupendous.[br]We need to be thinking in an integrated fashion, 0:01:39.250,0:01:43.700 to take our population from where it is today,[br]to where it needs to be in the future. 0:01:45.540,0:01:51.140 Jim: We have our healthy living education initiative,[br]we are creating a community hub, that will 0:01:51.140,0:01:57.000 help us continue to evolve and produce leaders[br]in the field. And provide the graduates that 0:01:57.000,0:02:01.360 employers are looking for.[br]Brad: I think it’s important for Algonquin to 0:02:01.360,0:02:06.920 stay engaged, as it already has, with the[br]population base here in the Ottawa area, but also with 0:02:06.920,0:02:11.310 the health care providers in Ottawa area. They’ve[br]done that brilliantly through their association 0:02:11.310,0:02:16.220 with the Champlain LHIN. Around the world,[br]you don’t see a lot of initiatives like 0:02:16.220,0:02:20.690 this so Algonquin is really on the leading[br]edge of in terms of getting a large collaboration 0:02:20.690,0:02:27.310 of experts together to focus on creating and[br]teaching a healthier environment for all of us.
