WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (A lotus for you) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Respected Thay, Dear Noble Sangha, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Welcome to Plum Village. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is our first Mindfulness Day, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Spring Retreat, and thank you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for coming together, as a Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a Chinese delegation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who came by the bus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is not a school, where you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 come and you learn, and you get a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 degree...no. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't come here even to learn Buddhism. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is not an ordinary community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where we come and chit-chat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to get involved in communication, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 talking with someone, or looking 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for someone to be your friend, to be your lover. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is a practice centre. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a community of practice where we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 devote our energy and time into 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the practice according to the Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our main practice in Plum Village 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is mindfulness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mindfulness means you come back to yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You bring your wandering mind 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 back to the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Bring your mind back to the body, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you establish yourself in the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At the end of the monastic retreat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have 10 lazy days. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lazy day means there is no schedule 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the practice. So you are on your own. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No one remind you to practice, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 no schedule...no community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 schedule for you. So you are on your own. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a time of examination, whether you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can do it by yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because a community practice- it depends 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on individual practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We take refuge in the community. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It means that you are also taking refuge 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in each individual practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If the Sangha is strong, it means 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everybody is strong. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Everybody is (can't catch), 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everybody is solid. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Everyone know the way to go 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 back to oneself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be in the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's so clear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is a training place. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Training here is training mindfulness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be alive, to be back to oneself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be alive, and then to touch life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what do we want to be here for?- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as the monastic? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What do you want to be here for, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as an aspirant to become the monastic? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What do you want to be here - as the lay? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You want to be here in order to embody the practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To take the concrete practice and then 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to find ourselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is like the mountain that has 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a lot of jewels. You need to take it out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need to know how to collect 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the jewels. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need sharp eyes, clear eyes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village Sangha is like a forest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where all the trees stand together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 majestically standing together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 under the sunlight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We enter this community, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we enjoy the majestic energy of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the forest, in the morning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we don't want to come here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for anything else than that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's one sutra that the Buddha spoke about. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's related to this: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a Sutra on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Majjhima Nikaya, it means 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Middle Discourse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Number 29. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha spoke about how to be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a monastic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This discourse was delivered after 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Devadatta left the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Devadatta, he created a lot of problems. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Devadatta is a cousin of the Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When he entered the monastic life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after a while he wanted to become 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a Buddha! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He wanted to be a Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He wanted to become a second Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He wanted to become the leader 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when the Buddha was still alive, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he said, "Dear Buddha, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 let you rest. I will take care 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Sangha. I'll become 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you- the leader of the Sangha". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the Buddha said." Don't mention that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Devadatta, in the Sangha, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there's beautiful monastics like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Shariputra, Maha Mogallana, Mahakasyapa 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they are beautiful people, but I don't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even let them become the leader 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So don't mention about you." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he get really upset. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He left the Sangha and he created a lot 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of problems. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He divide the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He convinced 500 monks to follow him, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he set up a new Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This sutra- the Buddha spoke after 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that event. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha said." When a young man, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 out of faith, left a lay life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and become a monastic. They're called 'homeless' ". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because a monk doesn't have a home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A monk lives in the forest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the community, in the monastery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we called all monastics 'are homeless'. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not like people who are homeless and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wandering in the town. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It means the people who devote their 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 energy, their life, their time to practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They don't concern themselves about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 other things, like material comfort, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or...effective comforts... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like romantic relationships... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't come here to look for romance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Like someone you love, secretly love. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You come here to practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we practice for a while, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we gain something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You gain comforts (not sure..can't catch) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We...not only gain, but honour..respect... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We become respected by someone, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by lay friends, and we become famous, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 renowned. Sometimes they called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you 'a renowned teacher', 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 become famous like a Dharma Teacher. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Could be a renowned person in the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Of course when you practice for a while, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you become a Dharma Teacher. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I could be a renowned person 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the community. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This young man left family life, go forth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the language of the Buddha, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 called 'go forth', means you go on, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you go higher, further, means you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ordain as a monastic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You take the life of a monk or 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a nun, and that's called 'go forth' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "The reason is that person don't want 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be a victim of birth, old age, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 death, sorrow, pain, despair. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That person doesn't want to be a victim of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 suffering, (can't catch) of suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He believe in the Sangha, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that is the way to end all the suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He practices dilligently...many years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he attain 'gaining'. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He attains honour, he attains renown, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He is pleased with these, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 his intention is fulfilled when he enjoys 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the gaining. I gain some kind of material 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 comfort,I come here I have food, I have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 room, all that... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He is satisfied with honouring, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 respect by other people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He is also satisfied with his position, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he is renowned. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he doesn't want to go on. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He doesn't want to practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's good enough for me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He praised himself, and he disparaged others. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He criticises the other people." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha say he became intoxicated, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with this gain, honour, renown. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He will grow into negligence, become 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 negligent and he will live in suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is the warning of the Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After we practice a while, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we think that we have enough. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I become a Dharma Teacher, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or maybe I go out, I build a temple, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have a lot of money, and that's it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You stopped practicing, you forget the first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 goal entering the Sangha. The most deepest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 concern entering the Sangha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You just stopped right there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha made an example, like a person, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 looking for heartwood. He goes into the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 forest and he found a beautiful giant tree. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He cut the tree into pieces, into logs. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but he doesn't know what is the heartwood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He only takes trees and branches. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That person who stopped at gaining, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and honouring, and renown, is like taking 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the branches and leaves only. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He didn't take the heartwood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The second kind of person, he doesn't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 get satisfied with gaining, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 honour, renown, he becomes diligent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and goes on practicing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He achieves attainment of moral discipline. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Moral discipline. (In Viet) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He really thinks with discipline, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with fine manners, with vinaya, with shila. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He achieves beautifully, radiating the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 energy of moral discipline. He is pleased 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with it, and his intention is fulfilled. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have enough. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He said, I'm the best, so I don't want to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 practice anymore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He praises himself and he (can't catch). 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha said he becomes intoxicated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into the gaining, attainment of moral 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 respect, moral discipline. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He will grow negligently and falls into 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 negligence and he lives in suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha says, " This man, this monk, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 only gets the outer bark of the tree". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Moral discipline, precepts, shila is only 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the outer bark of the tree. Outer bark of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the tree. You know the tree has bark? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You only get that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You haven't get the heartwood yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The heartwood is the strongest part 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the tree. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The third kind of monastic 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he does not (get) satisfied with gaining, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 honour, renown, even moral disciplines. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He continues to be dilligent in the practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He attains...achieves the concentration. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The deep samadhi. Samadhi. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he is pleased with it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 His intention is fulfilled, he doesn't 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 want to practice anymore. I am great 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 samadhi. Sometimes I can fly on the sky. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know in the sutra, sometimes they 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 spoke about a monk who can fly in the sky. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They guild. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He stopped practicing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He(is) bragging about his attainment. He 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is satisfied with his attainment of samadhi. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He lauded himself, he praised himself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He disparaged others. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha said, he becomes intoxicated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with attainment of concentraton, grows 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 negligently, fall into negligence, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he lives in suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You see, samadhi, but if you stopped... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can fall back to suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you are satisfied bragging about your 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 own practice of samadhi, you can fall back 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This person only gets the inner bark 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the tree. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So there's 2 barks-the outer bark 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and inner bark. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He didn't get the heartwood yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The fourth person- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he is not satisfied with concentration, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with great concentration. He is not satisfied 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with mindfulness. He is radiating with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 light, of mindfulness and concentration, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but he is not satisfied with that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He becomes dilligent, continue to practice 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wholeheartedly, and he achieves the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 non-achieve, the vision. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Knowledge and vision. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Vietnamese it called (in Viet) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He has the knowledge and vision. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He can see things deeper than others. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He is pleased with it, and his intention 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is fulfilled. He doesn't want to practice anymore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I got the knowledge, I got the insight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I don't want to practice anymore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He enjoys life, get caught in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 conversations, sleepy, seeking for pleasure. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He stopped the practice because he is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 satisfied of what he believe he can attain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The final. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He praised himself, he disparaged others. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the Buddha said, "This monk (is) also 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 falling back into suffering. He only get 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the sapwood". Certain place in the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tree you called sap..sap wood...the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 softer wood where it's (can't catch) sap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sapwood. S-A-P. Sapwood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Means softer kind of wood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not the heartwood yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It helps the tree to grow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's permeated with sap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha said, "not yet". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The last person, the last monastic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He's not satisfied with the knowledge 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and vision. He is not satisfied with insight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He becomes more dilligent in practicing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He practices wholeheartedly, and he 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 attains what they called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "perpetual emancipation". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unshakeable liberation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Perpetual means unshakeable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Liberation or emancipation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Buddha said, when a person gets this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of liberation, he will not fall 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 back into suffering. He got the heartwood. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this Discourse tells us that in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the practice, we don't stop. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't think that we got it. We've to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 continue to do the daily practice. We cannot 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 stop the practice in our daily life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I reflect on this sutra, I see that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we come to Plum Village, we think that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have enough, we get already enough. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we just...not really wholeheartedly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the Sangha practice. We just live our 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 life and let time go by. We need to have sharp eyes, to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 be able to see the jewels. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Especially those who live here for 10 years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 15 years or 20 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You will see that if we don't enjoy daily 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 practice, we fall into that trap of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 satisfaction. I have enough. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (can't catch) is nothing special. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Nothing here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's why today I would like to share 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with you what is the jewels 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of Plum Village. We need to know what is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the jewels. We don't just want to come 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 here to gain some kind of comforts, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to have money, to have food... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to have special food, to have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 room, comfortable room. We don't want to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 come here to gain material comfort. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or emotional comfort. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or to become famous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To become honourable person. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We want to come here to get the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 jewels of the Dharma. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And our Teacher is like a rich man. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He's like a rich... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 man who owns so much jewels and we are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the children of our teacher . We live with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 him, but we don't receive anything! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We behave like a desperate child. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first jewel in Plum Village is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the practice called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "I have arrived, I am home". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when you want to call the signature, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the seal of Plum Village is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "I have arrived, I am home". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Means you don't run anymore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You make one step and you stop your mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You stop your body and you stop your mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And you enter into the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You feel connect with Mother Earth, and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 " I have arrived, I am home". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes we have not arrived yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our mind is still thinking a lot. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are still looking for something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are still searching for something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We miss the first jewel of Plum Village. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No matter how long we live here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we don't have the jewel of Plum Village. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have arrived, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No more running. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No more aiming. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No more searching. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Happiness is not at the end of the road. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Happiness is on each step of the way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whether we arrived or not. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whether our mind stops and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 feel life or not. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just that is already important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Means the mind and the body comes together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then helps to arrive in the self. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Arrive in present moment, in life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You get some degree of freedom.. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The second seal of Plum Village is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "dwelling happily in the present moment" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the present moment is our destination. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know, I begin with the sutra in order 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to speak about Plum Village practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the sutra is not important, but 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village practice is important, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because that's why we come here for! Haha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some people still don't have faith in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village practice. They don't have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 faith in the teacher. They are still 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 waiting for moments to go away from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village. To find something else. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's why speaking about the jewels of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village is so important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Plum Village's seal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "arrived, home" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have to realise this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have to really experience this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because it's the practice of no running. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No aiming. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No searching. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not even attainment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't look for attainment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because each step you feel alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You touch life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Each step you come home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mind come back to the body, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you become whole. And you will be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whole by the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A lot of nourishing and healing in there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you don't need to run. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 YouI don't need to even search for 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 enlightenment, because there is no 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 enlightenment at the end of the road. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't need even to become a Buddha. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just be yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be home sweet home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't need to be someone else. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes we feel like we are nothing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are only a human being full of suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we want to become someone else. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But this practice, "home", 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I need to bring my mind back. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I need to bring myself back. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On each step I make. So you feel 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mother Earth when you walk like that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You are connecting with Mother Earth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it means that you feel yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So between you and Mother Earth is life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is energy of mindfulness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Energy of being alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a clarity in the mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When you feel Mother Earth, you feel 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 yourself and all anxiety stopped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All anixety, all worry, all pain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and sorrow stopped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is very clear when the Buddha 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 said, "A young man left home, go forth, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 become a monastic, because of one reason. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That he doesn't want to be a victim 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of birth, death, old age, sorrow, despair. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He doesn't want to be a victim of his 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 suffering and despair and stress". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this can be the way to stop all our 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 block of suffering, mass of suffering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The second jewel of Plum Village 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 practice is dwelling in the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Happily. In the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The present moment is our destiny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you don't know where to go- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 present moment. If you want to know 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whether you have mindfulness or not, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you ask yourself, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 'Am I in the present moment"? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the present moment, everything 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 becomes alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You are radiating with light, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you see light outside. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your soul becomes green like grass, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your mind becomes clear like light. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because you enter the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is a formula I like so much, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when I'm talking about arrived home, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a formula called velocity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Velocity equals distance over time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is when you want to arrive at home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We use this physics formula called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 velocity=distance/time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When distance is here, here means here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't make a step. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your mind don't run here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't go anywhere, and time is now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 means zero. Over zero. Velocity equals zero. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Means you stopped! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You are free from velocity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your mind totally stay still. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Isn't that cool? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mathematics can cool the Buddha's teaching. (Mathematics can make the teaching cool). 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want to stop your mind, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thay says, "stop thinking radio station" (Thay says stop non-stop thinking radio) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want to stop your mind- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here & Now. Arrived. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You see, it's very clear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Present moment is our destiny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Present moment is our country. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When no one can occupy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No one can control that wonderful country 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of yours. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When you enter the present moment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everything becomes so real. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can hear song of the bird 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all the time. Now is the time, the bird is singing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 almost all day long. Especially in the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 early morning about 6 o' clock, 6.20. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the present moment, flowers (are ) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 blooming all the time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your body, your mind, green like the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 meadows, sparkling with light 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is your destination. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't need to find happiness because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the present moment, you have a lot of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happiness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Of course you don't need money to be happy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the present moment, you feel so good. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All is so great. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be one with sunlight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wow, it's so good to see daffodils. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To really enjoy, touch daffodils. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The colour of golden colour. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the present moment, what we called 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the true peace. We need to get this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is very precious jewel. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So important dharma seal of Plum Village. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Anybody can do it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Anybody can enter the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Dwelling, stay, establish youself 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There will be full of happiness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our Teacher has a very famous expression, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 " There is no way to happiness, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happiness in the way". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Means you make one step, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have to feel arrive and home. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You enter the present moment and then you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 experience happiness. Because you become 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one with the meadow, you feel the warmth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the sunshine in your body. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is happiness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So happiness is at every step. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we don't have this, at the end there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 will be nothing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because our mind keeps running. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't need to run after happiness, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after peace, after joy, after well-being. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Happiness, peace, joy, well-being 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are already available. You experience it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You taste it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And that requires, "home, arrive". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Mind stop. No velocity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So these go together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 True peace. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the beautiful thing in the present 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 moment is the silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you are too noisy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you don't feel much. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Can you believe in the morning, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the song of the bird are calling you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you are too noisy! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You are talking a lot, non-stop, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and your mind keep thinking. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thinking, looking of something, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you really don't know 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you missed the morning song of the birds. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the silence is so important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The silence inside of the mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you feel you don't know 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what to do, enjoy the silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes we are afraid of silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At times you are alone, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you feel don't know what to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You want to look for someone else to talk. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You ruin your silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You destroy your awareness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your clarity of the mind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In 10 lazy days I spent time by myself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My mentee that goes to the hut, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they have their own practice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I'm their mentor, I also do by myself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I hide myself in the forest. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think I have enough noise already. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes we live together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's too much noise. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When there's too much noise, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we don't feel much (of) present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't feel much, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the energy of peace, of joy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 refreshing, healing energy in life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the present moment, what you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 need is silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Silence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other thing is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 do one thing at a time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Don't do multitask. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One thing at a time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have a habit of learning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I want to learn so much. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes I learn something, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I read something, but I write something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because I am afraid of losing them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am afraid I don't have enough time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I listen to a Dharma talk, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I am writing something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You just do one thing at a time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to really feel the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You do the garden, and you just do the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 garden. You put all your heart into the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 garden. In one of the lazy day, I worked in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the rose garden. I put all my heart into 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 doing the rose garden. I weed the grass, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I cut the grass, I clear away 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the weed that occupy the root of the rose. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I trim the rose. So you do one thing at 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a time, you stay in the present moment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's why our teacher says, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Just breathe" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Just walk". 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we walk, and that's it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't think about something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we do walking meditation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (it) doesn't mean you are thinking about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the dharma talk. No, you just walk, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the insight comes out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The talk doesn't come from thinking. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The talk comes from the insight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The experience. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So just walk, just breath, just eat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Is that simple enough? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And help to clear the mind! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because the silence is so important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The clear mind is so important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In order to have clear mind, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the silence, we need to do one thing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at a time. It helps (us) to concentrate, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to help us concentrate on one thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The practice is 'just breathe'. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I like this so much. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Just breathe", "Just walk" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we eat, we just eat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Enjoy, taste.
