--> 99:59:59.999 and just a few miles from the ocean. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was waiting for a miracle to happen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That summer I was privileged to work as an intern 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as NASA's Kennedy Space Center, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the miracle I was waiting for 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was the launch of the Columbia Space Shuttle, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 carrying the Shondra X-Ray Observatory, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a telescope that would allow scientists to peer into the end of black holes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The entire sky filled with light. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it was as if it was daytime in the middle of the night. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Soon, we could feel the rumble of the engines vibrating in our chests. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it wasn't a miracle; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it was the combined effort of a team of thousands of people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who worked together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make was seemed impossible a reality. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I wanted to join that team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I decided to apply to university where I could study aerospace engineering, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the following year, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I started at MIT in my engineering training 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and joined a student project building space robots. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And everything was going as I planned, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 except I was confused about something important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, my confusion arose in my summer breaks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I traveled to a school in Kenya, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and there I volunteered with girls ages five to 17, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 giving them lessons in English and math and science. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they taught me songs in Swahili. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And mostly, I just spent time getting to know the girls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 enjoying their presence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I saw that these girls, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the leaders in their community, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were overcoming important barriers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to allow these girls to have the best possible chances in life ... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I wanted to join that team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wanted to be part of a team that would help break down barriers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and improve the lives of girls around the world, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I was worried that studying aerospace engineering 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wasn't the most useful. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was worried this team in Kenya 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 couldn't use the technology I was learning about space. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But thankfully, I still learned that I was wrong. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I came back and interned at NASA again, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a mentor taught me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that countries like Kenya had been involved using space technology 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for decades 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to improve the lives in their own countries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I knew that I could have a career in space and in development. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This idea is not new. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, in 1967, the nations of the world came together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to write the Outer Space Treaty. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This treaty made a bold statement, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 saying that the exploration and use of outer space 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 should be carried on for the benefit of all peoples, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 irrespective of their level of economic or scientific development. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have no truly liked up to this ideal, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 although people have worked for decades to make this a reality. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Forces such as colonialism and racism and gender inequality 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have actually excluded many people from the benefits of space, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and caused us to believe that space is for the few, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or the rich or elite. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But we cannot afford this attitude, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because the world is engaged in a vital mission 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to improve life for everyone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our roadmap for this mission comes from the 17 sustainable development goals 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the United Nations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All the member states of the United Nations have agreed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that these are priorities between now and 2030. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These goals give us our key moments and opportunities of our time -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 opportunities to end extreme poverty, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to insure that everyone has access to food and clean water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We must pursue these goals as a global community, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and technology from space supports sustainable development, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in fact there are six space services 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that can help us pursue the sustainable development goals. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Over the next few minutes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 let's explore these six services, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and see examples of just a few of the goals they help support. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You ready? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 OK. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Communication satelites provide access to phone and internet service 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to almost any location on earth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is particularly important during times of disaster recovery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When Typhoon Hian struck the Phillipines, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the local communication netwworks needed to be repaired, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and teams brought in inflatable communication antennas 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that could link to satellites. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This was useful during the time of repair and recovery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Positioning satellites tell us where we are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by telling us where they are. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Scientists can use this technology to track endagered wildlife. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This turtle has been fitted with a system 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that allows it to receive location information from positioning satellites, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they send the location information 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to scientists via communication satellites. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Scientists can use this knowledge to then make better policies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and help determine how to keep these animals alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Earth observation satellites. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They tell us what's going on in our environment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now right now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there are about 150 satellites operated by over 60 government agencies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and these are just those observing the earth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And meanwhile, companies are adding to this list. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Most of the governments provide the data from the satellites for free online. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of these satellites provide images like this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that show what you would see from a camera. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is an image showing agricultural land in Kansas. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 However the majority of the earth observation satellites 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 don't take pictures at all. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They take measurements. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they combine these measurements with complex computer models 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and make beautiful, global visualizations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 such ast this one, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 showing the ocean currents 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the temperature of the ocean, globally. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or we can look at the salt and smoke and dust in the atmosphere. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or the rainfall and snowfall globablly. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As well as the annual cycle of vegetation on land and in the ocean. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now scientists can take this information about the rainfall and the vegetation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and use it to understand what areas on earth are in danger 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of a famine or a drought, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and provide that information to aid organizations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so they can be prepared with food aid before the hunger becomes severe. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In space, we have an orbiting laboratory on the international space station. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The vehicle, and everything inside, are in a form of freefall around the earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they don't experience the effect of gravity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And because of this, we call it microgravity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When astronauts are in the microgravity environment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their bodies react as if they're aging rapidly. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Their bones and muscles weaken, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and their cardiovascualar system and their immune system change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As scientists study how to keep astronauts healthy in space, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can take the exercises and techniques we use for astronauts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and transfer them to people on earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to improve our health here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Often as we develop technology for astronauts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and exploration, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or for spacecraft, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can also tranfer those inventions to improve life on earth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here's one of my favorites. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a water filtration system, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and a key component of it is based the technology 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to filter wastewater on the space station. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's now being used around the world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Space is also an infinite source of inspiration. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Through education, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through research and astronomy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that age-old experience of stargazing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 countries are around the world are enganging 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in advancing their own development 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by increasing their local knowledge of engineering, and science and space. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's meet some of the world's newest satellite engineers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is [Eleka ... ] from Venezuela. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Elecka is training as a satellite engineer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as part of her nation satellite program in Venezuela. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She has designed a software tool 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to better design the power systems for engineering. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is Adele Castillo-Duran, electrical engineering as an undergraduate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in [Cartun], 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she and several students decided to build their own satellite. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And later, [...] earned a scholarship 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to study satellite engineering at the graduate level. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These stories that I've shared with you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all illustrate that space really is useful for sustainable development 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the benefit of all peoples. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But we have more work to do, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because there are still barriers that exclude people from space 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and limit the impact of this technology. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For many people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 earth observation data is complex. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And satellite communication services are too expensive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And microgravity research just appears to be inaccessible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is what motivates my work as a professor at MIT's media lab. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I've recently founded a new research group called "Space Enabled." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are working to tear down these barriers that limit the benefits of space, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we're also going to develop the future applications 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that will continue to contribute to sustainable development. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We'll keep on this work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 until we can truly say that space is for the benefit of all peoples, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we are all space enabled.
