Let me give you a story to 0:01:02.070,0:01:06.250 help illustrate this point. You might[br]never have heard of the flying shuttle, 0:01:06.250,0:01:11.260 but it was one of the most important[br]inventions in the industrial revolution. 0:01:11.260,0:01:15.320 The flying shuttle improved looms,[br]making it easier to make fabric 0:01:15.320,0:01:19.910 quickly and cheaply, and that made it[br]possible for people around the world to 0:01:19.910,0:01:26.310 have new clean clothes. For the very first[br]time, fashion became something that wasn't 0:01:26.310,0:01:33.430 just for the very, very rich. The flying[br]shuttle was invented by John Kay. And what 0:01:33.430,0:01:38.000 did Kay get for his efforts? Weavers who[br]thought that Kay's invention would put 0:01:38.000,0:01:43.550 them out of work, they smashed the new[br]looms, and they burned Kay's house to the 0:01:43.550,0:01:49.180 ground. Despite creating one of the most[br]important inventions to launch the 0:01:49.180,0:01:55.060 Industrial Revolution and improve the[br]world, Kay, in fear for his life, fled to 0:01:55.060,0:02:00.110 France, where he ultimately died a poor[br]man. I don't know about you, but if I saw 0:02:00.110,0:02:05.570 what happened to John Kay, I might not be[br]too eager to pursue my invention. Let's 0:02:05.570,0:02:11.050 contrast Kay’s story with a great innovator[br]from recent times, Steve Jobs. For his 0:02:11.050,0:02:16.880 Innovations, not only did he earn lots of[br]money, but also cultural awards. Jobs 0:02:16.880,0:02:23.030 became an icon that people want to[br]emulate. This goes back to institutions 0:02:23.030,0:02:27.870 and incentives. The institutions today in[br]the United States have enabled an amazing 0:02:27.870,0:02:34.230 environment for entrepreneurs to thrive[br]and create new ideas. If you have a great 0:02:34.230,0:02:38.770 idea in the United States, in America,[br]American institutions create good 0:02:38.770,0:02:43.770 incentives to pursue that idea. You'll[br]find incubators and venture capitalists 0:02:43.770,0:02:48.910 who can help you start your business, laws[br]to protect your idea, a culture that 0:02:48.910,0:02:55.660 idolizes innovators, and markets who will[br]reward you handsomely should your idea be 0:02:55.660,0:03:01.240 attractive to consumers. John Kay could[br]only dream of the sort of world where he 0:03:01.240,0:03:05.760 could profit from his work.
