0:00:00.190,0:00:05.670 When it comes to dietary-centered discussions[br]between non-vegans and vegans, things can 0:00:05.670,0:00:11.690 easily become heated. From academic one-upmanship[br]of the most recent research to the far more 0:00:11.690,0:00:16.990 informal frenzied exchange of sardonic memes[br]and crafty YouTube comments, 0:00:16.990,0:00:20.050 it's safe to say: “words are had.” 0:00:20.500,0:00:24.960 Well, one team of international scientists[br]decided to analyze the arguments from 0:00:24.960,0:00:29.900 the meat-eating camp by bringing out the big guns: [br]the N-Words. 0:00:34.999,0:00:40.480 Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome[br]to another vegan nugget. Humans have a wide 0:00:40.480,0:00:46.199 array of reasons for eating animals. From[br]taste to tradition to nutrition, to the absurd 0:00:46.199,0:00:52.449 assertion that animals want to be eaten—yes[br]that’s a thing and it’s far more common 0:00:52.449,0:00:53.289 than you may think. 0:00:53.900,0:00:59.340 But what’s behind this need to justify,[br]explain and rationalize the consumption of animals? 0:00:59.840,0:01:05.780 Why do omnivores often offer up unbidden[br]impassioned defenses of their dietary practices 0:01:05.790,0:01:11.080 upon learning someone is vegan—whether they[br]be passive apologies for consuming meat in 0:01:11.080,0:01:13.970 their presence or outright attacks and challenges? 0:01:14.260,0:01:20.380 Well, nothing provokes our knee-jerk defenses[br]or highlights our human capacity for award-worthy 0:01:20.380,0:01:25.560 rationalizations, and impassioned justifications,[br]quite like the perceived judgment 0:01:25.560,0:01:28.240 of behaviors we’re already insecure about. 0:01:28.550,0:01:34.340 Despite the seemingly endless iterations of[br]meat-eating defenses, a similar refrain has 0:01:34.340,0:01:39.820 been coursing through them for thousands of[br]years. (Yes, thousands). 0:01:40.540,0:01:46.240 In 2015, an international team of researchers[br]produced the first empirical systematic study 0:01:46.240,0:01:51.930 of meat-consumption rationalizations, more[br]or less corralling the multitudes of justifications 0:01:51.930,0:01:57.060 into four main categories, denoted by what[br]they call the 4N’s: 0:01:57.060,0:02:01.520 that it’s Natural, Normal, Necessary, and Nice. 0:02:01.530,0:02:05.910 Building off of the 3N’s presented in Dr.[br]Melanie Joy’s landmark text 0:02:05.910,0:02:12.240 Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows, the team added the 4th N of “Nice” to capture “the 0:02:12.240,0:02:16.980 enjoyment people derive from eating meat,”[br]which they said “is a major barrier to reducing 0:02:16.980,0:02:22.350 meat consumption and/or adopting a vegetarian[br]diet,” as they found that, “meat-eaters…often 0:02:22.350,0:02:27.760 appeal to the tastiness of meat, or the hedonic[br]pleasure that they derive from it, as a justification 0:02:27.760,0:02:33.440 for its continued consumption,” a rationale[br]not encompassed within Joy’s original 3 strata. 0:02:33.450,0:02:38.340 In this video, I’ll be presenting an overview[br]of this particular study, the drive behind 0:02:38.340,0:02:42.530 the human need for rationalization, as well[br]as touch upon the broader implications of 0:02:42.530,0:02:47.110 the 4Ns—which reach far beyond the realm[br]of dietary dissonance into 0:02:47.110,0:02:50.880 “Many historical practices, from slavery to sexism.” 0:02:50.880,0:02:56.640 Perhaps most controversially, the study strove[br]to address the question: are omnivores inherently 0:02:56.640,0:03:01.050 more tolerant of social inequality within[br]their own species? 0:03:01.050,0:03:05.990 Let’s start with a quick look at the 4N’s[br]as defined within the study’s parameters, 0:03:05.990,0:03:11.910 again with the first 3 taking inspiration[br]from Dr. Joy’s Three N’s of Justification.” 0:03:11.910,0:03:14.990 N #1: Eating Meat Is Natural 0:03:14.990,0:03:21.090 Our first N “Appeals to biology, biological[br]hierarchy, natural selection, human evolution, 0:03:21.090,0:03:23.490 or the naturalness of eating meat.” 0:03:23.490,0:03:27.700 Examples include: It is natural for humans[br]to eat meat; Humans are carnivores; We’ve 0:03:27.709,0:03:32.040 always eaten meat and/or have evolved to do[br]so; We have canine teeth; Animals eat other 0:03:32.040,0:03:34.780 animals; Animals are here for us to eat; et[br]cetera 0:03:34.780,0:03:37.870 N #2: Eating Meat Is Necessary 0:03:37.870,0:03:43.560 The 2nd N “Appeals to the necessity of meat[br]for survival, strength, development, health, 0:03:43.560,0:03:46.459 animal population control, or economic stability.” 0:03:46.459,0:03:51.310 Examples include: Humans need meat to survive;[br]Meat provides good nutrients; Our bodies need 0:03:51.310,0:03:55.569 the protein; Protein is a necessary part of[br]our diet; and, one of my personal favorites: 0:03:55.569,0:03:59.689 Because if we didn’t, there would be an[br]overabundance of certain animals. 0:04:01.700,0:04:06.760 I made a video about that. A while ago. I dance in[br]it. 0:04:06.760,0:04:09.940 N #3: Eating Meat Is Normal 0:04:09.940,0:04:14.240 The 3rd N “Appeals to dominant [br]societal norms, normative behavior, 0:04:14.240,0:04:18.460 historical human behavior, or socially constructed food pyramids.” 0:04:18.470,0:04:22.720 Examples include: Society says it’s okay;[br]I was raised eating meat; Meat is culturally 0:04:22.720,0:04:25.760 accepted or an important part of tradition;[br]A lot of other people eat meat; 0:04:25.760,0:04:28.740 It’s abnormal NOT to eat meat; et cetera 0:04:28.740,0:04:34.060 And finally the additional N #4: Eating Meat[br]Is Nice 0:04:34.060,0:04:38.320 This new N was introduced to capture “Appeals[br]to the tastiness of meat, 0:04:38.320,0:04:41.080 or that it is fulfilling or satisfying.” 0:04:41.090,0:04:46.250 Examples include: It tastes good; It’s delicious;[br]Tastes great (I mean bacon...come on) 0:04:47.320,0:04:52.760 [yes, that’s actually in the official study. Table1]; 0:04:54.100,0:04:58.160 Meat adds so much flavor to a meal it does not make sense to leave it out”, “The best tasting food 0:04:58.160,0:05:02.500 is normally a meat-based dish; Meals without meat would just be bland and boring; et cetera 0:05:02.900,0:05:06.840 It’s important to note that a number of[br]objections and diversion tactics fall a bit 0:05:06.840,0:05:12.840 outside the realm of the 4Ns. In the first[br]two studies, wherein respondents offered spontaneous 0:05:12.840,0:05:18.900 justifications, categories of Humane Slaughter,[br]Religion, Sustainability, Various Miscellany 0:05:18.910,0:05:22.930 and the outright rejection of the study’s[br]premise were recorded. 0:05:22.930,0:05:27.530 While they subsequently included concepts[br]of religion, hierarchy and fate within the 0:05:27.530,0:05:31.980 “Natural” category and health arguments[br]within the “Necessary,” at the study’s 0:05:31.990,0:05:36.790 outset, the team clarified that while “there[br]are numerous strategies available to omnivores 0:05:36.790,0:05:42.380 to bring their beliefs and behavior in line,[br]including denying that animals used as food 0:05:42.380,0:05:47.270 suffer or that such animals are worthy of[br]moral concern,” their goal was to focus 0:05:47.270,0:05:51.740 on the “common, yet under-studied mechanism[br][of] rationalization.” 0:05:51.740,0:05:56.780 Unlike straight up denials of animal sentience,[br]willful ignorance or passive avoidance of what 0:05:56.780,0:06:02.100 we do to animals—essentially the “I don’t[br]see it so it doesn’t happen” mentality—“ 0:06:02.100,0:06:06.940 rationalization involves providing reasonable[br]justifications for one’s behavior when it 0:06:06.949,0:06:12.130 comes under scrutiny or criticism, or when[br]one’s behavior is perceived as discrepant 0:06:12.130,0:06:14.900 with an integral aspect of one’s character.” 0:06:14.900,0:06:19.830 So what were the results? To go in depth,[br]please see the blog post for this video linked 0:06:19.830,0:06:23.580 in the description, but some of the main[br]findings were as follows: 0:06:23.580,0:06:29.850 Overall, as expected, “omnivores had the[br]highest 4N scores, followed by semi-vegetarians.” 0:06:29.850,0:06:33.570 (meaning people who only eat some animals…apparently). 0:06:33.820,0:06:38.759 “Vegetarians and dietary and lifestyle vegans had the lowest 4N scores.” 0:06:38.759,0:06:42.440 Men endorsed the 4Ns more strongly than did[br]women. 0:06:42.440,0:06:47.750 Men also engaged in more direct justification[br]strategies, while women tended towards “indirect 0:06:47.750,0:06:51.830 strategies of dissociating or avoiding thoughts[br]of animal suffering.” 0:06:51.830,0:06:56.289 In regards to whether “individuals…who[br]consume higher quantities of meat…tend to 0:06:56.289,0:07:02.820 be more supportive of inequality in group[br]relationships” and “endorse anti-egalitarian values," 0:07:02.820,0:07:08.160 they found, as did previous research,[br]that “meat justification appears to be related 0:07:08.169,0:07:10.460 to inequality justification.” 0:07:10.460,0:07:16.280 The researchers invoked Dr. Joy’s examples[br]of the 3Ns employment across others issues, 0:07:16.280,0:07:21.850 from slavery to women’s suffrage. “Opponents[br]of women’s suffrage… appealed to the necessity 0:07:21.850,0:07:28.110 of denying women the vote to prevent ‘irreparable[br]damage’ to the nation, to the natural superiority 0:07:28.110,0:07:33.730 of male intelligence, and to the historical[br]normalness of male-only voting as 0:07:33.730,0:07:35.750 “designed by our forefathers.” 0:07:36.260,0:07:40.960 In the end, it’s the reasons behind the[br]rationalizations, the very need for them at 0:07:40.970,0:07:45.699 all that are the most profound aspect of this[br]entire issue. It’s something I’ve gone 0:07:45.699,0:07:50.460 into in depth in many of my videos, including[br]this revealing speech, along with others I’ve 0:07:50.460,0:07:52.160 listed in the video description below. 0:07:52.880,0:07:57.840 Living in a state of cognitive dissonance[br]wherein our actions directly conflict with 0:07:57.850,0:08:03.330 our own professed morals and values, causes[br]extreme dis-ease within us. 0:08:03.330,0:08:10.270 Eating animals is, in essence, living a double life. Attempting to be animal lovers and animal killers. 0:08:10.720,0:08:15.919 To see ourselves as good people while we pay[br]others to carry out barbaric acts of cruelty 0:08:15.919,0:08:19.139 we would never directly inflict upon another being. 0:08:19.620,0:08:23.260 This is what the study’s creators termed[br]the “meat paradox.” 0:08:23.260,0:08:28.600 Omnivores are left with the choice of either changing their behaviors to align with their values by ceasing 0:08:28.600,0:08:34.120 to eat animals and their byproducts, or manipulating[br]their perception of reality in such a way 0:08:34.120,0:08:38.140 that it at least appears that their behaviors[br]align with their values. 0:08:38.140,0:08:43.580 Not surprisingly, the majority of the world[br]chooses the latter. Because changing our behavior 0:08:43.589,0:08:48.399 when it comes to eating animals means confronting[br]head-on our complicity in their enslavement, 0:08:48.399,0:08:54.510 torture, and murder. It means facing the horrors[br]we’ve supported and vehemently defended. 0:08:54.510,0:08:58.110 It means looking ourselves in the mirror with[br]outright honesty. 0:08:58.760,0:09:03.820 And brining up protein, desert islands, canines,[br]traditions, the wisdom of the masses, and all 0:09:03.830,0:09:10.790 the litany of rationalizations, justifications and[br]avoidances, is by far an easier and safer choice. 0:09:11.640,0:09:16.800 There is bliss in ignorance. [br]For the ignorant. 0:09:18.040,0:09:22.760 I hope that this video was helpful, and perhaps[br]even prompts the slightest moment of reflection 0:09:22.760,0:09:26.920 at the aspects of our behavior we strive so[br]ardently to justify. 0:09:27.140,0:09:30.700 Please share it around to spark discussion[br]and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the 0:09:30.700,0:09:34.850 comments below.
