0:00:08.489,0:00:11.062 Those of you who follow us on Facebook 0:00:12.232,0:00:13.837 may wonder why we have 0:00:13.837,0:00:15.017 things like this on Facebook. 0:00:15.017,0:00:16.627 And I do hope everyone is following us 0:00:16.627,0:00:17.527 on Facebook. 0:00:17.651,0:00:18.981 But if you do follow us [br]on Facebook 0:00:18.981,0:00:20.151 you know that we have a laugh 0:00:20.151,0:00:21.731 in the afternoon everyday. 0:00:21.731,0:00:23.081 Can you all see that? OK 0:00:23.081,0:00:25.801 So, you know, we have things 0:00:25.801,0:00:28.561 like this or things like this one. 0:00:28.561,0:00:30.651 This one was just up earlier this week. 0:00:30.867,0:00:33.467 It's a scientist's tip on how you tell an 0:00:33.467,0:00:35.307 alligator from a crocodile, 0:00:35.307,0:00:38.127 by whether the animal will see you later 0:00:38.127,0:00:40.197 or in a while. That's how you can tell 0:00:40.817,0:00:42.267 OK. There's another way you can tell 0:00:42.267,0:00:44.187 the difference between them 0:00:44.187,0:00:46.377 and that is if the animal is singing 0:00:46.377,0:00:47.597 and dancing and playing a musical 0:00:47.597,0:00:49.787 instrument, it's certainly an alligator 0:00:49.787,0:00:51.687 Crocodiles would never do anything 0:00:51.687,0:00:54.707 like that, so why do we do this? 0:00:55.467,0:00:57.437 Why are we 'yucking' it up all the time 0:00:57.437,0:00:59.877 Well, the fact is that the topics we 0:00:59.877,0:01:03.057 deal with on a regular basis [br]are very grim. 0:01:03.727,0:01:05.817 We deal with a lot of dark stuff. 0:01:05.817,0:01:08.377 As you just saw, our previous speaker, 0:01:08.377,0:01:09.537 practically in tears, 0:01:09.537,0:01:12.497 And he's not the only one that's going 0:01:12.497,0:01:13.567 through this type of stuff. 0:01:14.304,0:01:17.824 And one of the least fun things that 0:01:17.824,0:01:20.254 we deal with now is child abuse. 0:01:21.034,0:01:22.924 These are not fun things to deal with. 0:01:22.924,0:01:25.724 So we laugh, we try to yuck it up and have 0:01:25.724,0:01:27.024 a good time, because if we don't, 0:01:27.024,0:01:28.894 we'll give up. We gotta be in it for the 0:01:28.894,0:01:30.924 long haul, which means you gotta be 0:01:30.924,0:01:32.954 able to, you know, have some fun once 0:01:32.954,0:01:34.674 in a while. So that's why we have 0:01:34.674,0:01:36.764 stupid alligators and chick magnets 0:01:36.764,0:01:39.234 and things like that on our website 0:01:39.234,0:01:43.234 every afternoon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, I mentioned this pamphlet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Do you know a survivor 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the Sexual Revolution?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you open that up and study it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you will not see survivors 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of sexual abuse on there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the reason they're not on there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is because when I was working this out in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 2013, I said to myself: "Well you know 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there's always been sexual abuse, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it isn't really fair to attribute that to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Sexual Revolution. [br]And besides, look at 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all these other stuff we have to work on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Isn't this enough for one organization? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And besides, secretly, I didn't want to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 deal with it because it's not really... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's awful. No one really wants to deal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with it, but then last year 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 these issues started coming up, with the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sexual harassment issues with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Harvey Weinstein and all of these things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And you could kind of see that the girls 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 were trying to solve the #metoo movement 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but they weren't really going to get it 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 done because they were kind of hanging 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on to the Sexual Revolution. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They were hanging onto things they 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 shouldn't be hanging on to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, so I thought: [br]"You know, maybe we need 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be talking about this". And then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the whole thing broke with [br]the clergy sexual abuse 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 within the Catholic Church, and then I 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just became really convinced 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "yeah, we gotta deal with it".[br]the Reuben Institutes got to deal with it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 First off, nobody else will deal with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the broad spectrum of the Sexual 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Revolution like we will, so therefore 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we're the only guys in the field. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But also the Sexual Revolution is deeply 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 implicated in this whole thing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For this reason, the Sexual Revolution is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a set of ideas, and those ideas 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 empower predators. They encourage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 predators. The core idea of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sexual Revolution is that everybody is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 entitled to sex! Everybody is entitled to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 guilt-free, child-free, problem-free sex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And anybody who says otherwise is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 violating your human rights, for crying 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 out loud! [br]Who really thinks 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you're entitled to sex? I mean come on, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's the view of a rapist. That's not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 real to think you're entitled to sex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that one idea, has many tentacles 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and is a very poisonous idea. And at the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 same time, these ideas also undermine the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 victims. They disarm the victims. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And so the Sexual Revolution is profoundly 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 implicated in the whole thing. And so, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's what motivated me to reach out 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to our next speaker, Moira Greyland Peat, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whom we're going to honour as 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the public witness of the year. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I met Moira at an event sponsored by 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in Texas, and I heard her story of growing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 up with openly, actively gay and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 lesbian parents. She's the author of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 best selling book The Last Closet and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she's the daughter of famous gay 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 authors, Marion Zimmer Bradley and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Walter Breen. And this is a photo of Moira 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there, in the center, with her mother 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and her brother. Her mother was the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 author of this series of books, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Mists of Avalon. She was married to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Walter Breen, who was also a famous author. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Moira's mother had a long-time lesbian 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 lover, and Walter Breen lived an active 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 homosexual life and was himself an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 unrepentant child molester. Both of her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 parents sexual abused Moira and her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 brother for years. And since they were 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 famous authors, and icons really, in the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 science fiction community, people didn't 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really do much about it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Her father enjoyed being in hot tubs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with children. Sometimes without any 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 clothes on. He would encourage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 kids to get into the hot tub with him 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 without any clothes on. And numerous 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 adults saw or could have seen that the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 kids were being groomed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And really, for all practical purposes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 nobody did anything about it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As a teenager, Moira called the police 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on her father, when she caught him 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the act of molesting a 11-year-old boy 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Her father was arrested, put in prison, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where he died, and her family considered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this an act of betrayal. Rather than 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 denying what her father did, her mother 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 said, "well children have the right to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 make up their own lines about having sex 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with adults". [br]Her father had made his views 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 clear in this book called Greek Love 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and a journal called The Journal of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Greek Love, which she edited. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In 2014, Moira revealed all these things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about her parents. People were shocked, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and she was shocked to find how many 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people who were also children of gays, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 reached out to her with similar stories. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So The Last Closet, Moira's book, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is not simply a tale of victimization 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 its also a tale that explains [br]how her parents 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 became who they became. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But Moira regards herself as lucky in one way, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her lifelong pain resulted 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in workholism and as a result,[br]she is a successful professional 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 musician. You wrote this, Girl. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm taking this right off your bio.[br](laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She is the founder and former artistic 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 director of the Royal English Opera. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She is an award-winning dramatic colour true 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 soprano with a nearly five-octave range. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She is an accomplished concert harpist, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 singer, composer, recruiting artist and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 movie actress. [br]Tonight... oops. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tonight, we're gonna hear her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 tell her story and perhaps, recite 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a poem or two from her work. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, first of all, help me welcome our 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Ruth Institute Public Witness of the Year 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 awardee Moira Greyland.[br](Audience applause) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you so much, Moira ... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Moira) Good evening, How are you doing? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Usually when I'm in front of a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 crowd of people i'm sitting in the corner 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with a harp and i don't have to talk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 i'm just going to sit there, [br](hums) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm the radio and that is i think very much 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how i felt about my parents 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for a long time. I'm just going to watch 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and not say anything[br]i want just 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to play the harp over here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 anyway Doug.. who is a wonderful witness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in his own right, contacted me 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this afternoon and asked me to send him 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a text of my speech. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now since I'm usually speak [br]extemporaneously 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 usually...[br]in the one speaking occasion I had 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 before this, so I didn't have any text 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to send him but i thought he wants me to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 send the text I better write some. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thus the podium.[br]I'm sure I'll look 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at it eventually. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In any case. [br]First of all, I wanted 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to talk to you about growing up straight 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and closeted. Yes closeted. My book is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 called "The Last Closet". Am I saying: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Alas! I'm the closet because I'm that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 horrible of a sexual person who has no 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 refuge and it is so very sad?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 No? It's because i was growing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 up in a family of gay people, and I was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 straight, and when i finally was able 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to admit this to my parents, they were 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 incensed. [br]Because my job as a child of gays 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to make them feel good. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Is to make them happy about themselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I will give a very extreme example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of what happens when we, children of gays, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cannot be the perfect advocates 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that our needy, victimised parents need us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be. [br]A little while ago there was a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 case that was big in the news[br]and it was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of a married lesbian couple and their six 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 adopted children.[br]When CPS was closing in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to investigate the starvation and terrible 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 brutality that these children were 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 subjected to.[br]Rather than let these children talk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about what happened to them,[br]the mother dosed the children and her wife 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with Benadryl and drove all eight of them[br]off a cliff. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I understood this story [br]and followed it closely, because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really understood how it was [br]that the most important thing[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the gay family is to make sure that[br]the children approve, approve, approve. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is why we are there! If we do not approve.[br]we don't deserve to be alive. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, that's heavy as hell. I am sorry about that.[br]Back to my speech! It's all here! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 OK. My name is Moira Greyland.[br]I am the daughter of two gay authors. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my mother is famous science fiction author, Marion Zimmer Bradley. [br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Author of the Arthurian series, [br]the bestselling book,[br]The Mists of Avalon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The MoA is a re-telling of the King Arthur legend [br]from a feminist perspective. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Naturally, the only way the only way to get Arthur, Gwenievere and Lancelot [br][br]into bed together at the same time 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to throw history, religion and good manners out of the window! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is very much what happened in our family. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my father is famous numismatic author, [br]Walter Breen. [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Between the two of them, [br][br]they were well over 100 books. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my parents were both sexually abused as children. [br]And both had broken relationships [br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with their opposite sex parents, while desperately[br]needing the love and approval of their same sex parent. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My mother was repeatedly raped by her [br]drunken father in the front seat of their truck,[br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where she would drive far away [br]from her farm house so[br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her screams would not be heard. [br]When she finally got the nerve to [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 call the cops,[br][br](whispers) Its a tradition now, I guess, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (regular) her father was arrested. [br]But her mother forced her [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to drop the charges, [br]rather than the sole provider imprisoned. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My father was brought up [br]in an orphanage, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where his adoptive mother worked[br]as a janitor. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he hated her for her harsh punishments,[br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and what he viewed as her religious [br]excesses.[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She put him in a monastery[br]when he was eleven. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hoping he would become a priest. [br]All he would say about his exposure 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the priests was that the experiences [br]he had with them was the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 only love he had ever known.[br]He was hidden from his adoptive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 father when they divorced[br]and he always longed for [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 his missing father.[br]Both my parents identified [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as gay long before they met.[br]My mother had lesbian relationships 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in her teens, which did not stop her [br]from marrying a man at 19 and having 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my oldest brother, David.[br]she ended up hating her first husband[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for forcing her into repeated abortions.[br]and when she told him she would 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 never have another abortion, [br]he simply stopped sleeping 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with her. [br]her liaisons with women continued. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my father already preferred boys [br]from his teenage years on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 his first arrest was in 1954[br]for exposing himself to a young boy[br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on a boardwalk in Atlantic City.[br]He was involved with a famous doctor,[br][br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Doctor Shelden, who was [br]into eugenics... nice fellow. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In a set of experiments in Colombia University,[br]called The Super Kids, [br]which was about high IQ children.[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now I am not convinced that all these boys [br]were necessarily so high 'IQ'ed.[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I am absolutely convinced that all these boys[br]had in common is that they were available. [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because for some strange reason, all these boys[br]ended up being paedophiles themselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even on that day, my father was using sci-fic[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conventions to groom his young targets. [br]My parents met through sci-fic fandoms 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and through mutual memberships at MENSA,[br]which is another story.[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my father was already well known [br]as a paedophile in sci-fic circles. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but since counter cultures back[br]in the 60s were reluctant to reject anyone, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he was tolerated.[br]the scandal called Breendoggle 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is B-R-E-E-N D-O-G-G-L-E, is online.[br]you can read what happened. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it contains eye witness reports of my father[br]publicly molesting about 10 children. [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and when I say children, I mean,[br]children under the age of 12. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the youngest one was a little girl 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who was 3. And this was in front [br]of other people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 nobody stopped him. The closest anyone came [br]to stopping him 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was the mother saying that she was [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 going to order her children to barricade 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 themselves in their rooms if he came to visit [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That was as far as anyone would go. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Pause) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A few people hated him. Others wondered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whether he was actually harming the kids, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 yet others were oblivious. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some even claimed that they didn't like one 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the boys he was sleeping with. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So what happened to the little bastard?[br]Is what they said. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my mother walked fully into the scandal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 fully cognisant and ready to marry my father. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Did my mother object to my father's actions? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Not on a tint pipe. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Admidst public denials, she welcomed the 10-year-old 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 boy he was sleeping with to bed [br]with both of them!
