Relations 0:01:39.782,0:01:41.497 but they said, "Hey we want you to go 0:01:41.497,0:01:45.291 and get a Master's degree[br]in Exercise Physiology 0:01:45.291,0:01:48.336 and then teach PE at West Point." 0:01:48.336,0:01:49.976 So I said, "Okay, sounds like a great idea. 0:01:49.976,0:01:52.028 It's broadening to be sure." 0:01:52.028,0:01:54.392 And I went out there -- (Laugther) -- Division Commander in 2009 0:03:46.493,0:03:48.974 the Army decided they wanted to promote me 0:03:48.974,0:03:50.159 to three-star General 0:03:50.159,0:03:51.743 I think because they wanted to prove 0:03:51.743,0:03:53.215 they have a sense of humor. 0:03:53.215,0:03:56.109 They then sent me to be the Commander of 0:03:56.109,0:03:58.452 Initial Military Training. 0:03:58.452,0:04:03.029 My job was to train[br]the 160,000 or so soldiers 0:04:03.029,0:04:04.976 or correction: civilians, 0:04:04.976,0:04:06.541 that would come into the Army every year 0:04:06.541,0:04:09.019 and turn them into soldiers. 0:04:09.019,0:04:12.604 What I found when I reported to that assignment 0:04:12.604,0:04:14.183 disturbed me. 0:04:14.183,0:04:15.984 Several facts came to my attention. 0:05:44.741,0:05:46.674 Well, we're getting the product of that 0:05:46.674,0:05:48.878 but in addition to second and third order effects 0:05:48.878,0:05:51.093 were young people that were joining year. 0:06:44.516,0:06:46.339 Phenomenal statistics. 0:06:46.339,0:06:49.380 But the combination[br]of a lack of physical education 0:06:49.380,0:06:52.838 and an increase of poor nutrition pelvis would crack 0:07:36.041,0:07:37.891 and it wouldn't be a clean break 0:07:37.891,0:07:39.646 but it would be a stress fracture 0:07:39.646,0:07:41.231 that would cause significant problems 0:07:41.231,0:07:45.495 and you can see starting in 2000[br]that we were beginning to see this 0:07:45.495,0:07:49.384 and this is because the people [br]we were recruiting were just coming of age 0:07:49.384,0:07:51.678 and many of them had not had PE 0:07:51.678,0:07:54.088 and they had started to have the bad nutrition. 0:07:54.088,0:07:57.047 But by 2009 when our new recruits 0:07:57.047,0:07:58.659 were 18 or 19 years old 0:07:58.659,0:08:00.890 they had gone through their entire life 0:08:00.902,0:08:04.093 without having a PE class[br]and dependent on bad nutrition. 0:08:04.093,0:08:07.940 Those 135 that we had at one training base 0:08:07.940,0:08:09.520 are significant injuries because 0:08:09.520,0:08:11.169 in order to fix it 0:08:11.169,0:08:15.827 it costs
