00:01:16.527 And it's because of some things I've seen 00:01:16.527 --> 00:01:18.444 in the last several years 00:01:18.444 --> 00:01:20.824 and I'd like to talk a little bit about those today 00:01:35.796 I was asked to go graduate school 00:01:35.796 --> 00:01:37.003 at Indiana University. 00:01:37.003 --> 00:01:39.782 I had studied as an undergraduate in International Relations 00:01:39.782 --> 00:01:41.497 but they said, "Hey we want you to go 00:01:41.497 --> 00:01:45.291 and get a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology 00:01:45.291 --> 00:01:48.336 and then teach PE at West Point." 00:01:48.336 --> 00:01:49.976 So I said, "Okay, sounds like a great idea. 00:01:49.976 --> 00:01:52.028 It's broadening to be sure." 00:01:52.028 --> 00:01:54.392 And I went out there -- (Laugther) -- 00:01:54.392 --> 00:01:55.914 I went to Indiana University 00:01:55.914 --> 00:01:58.690 and my first class was an anatomy class 00:01:58.690 --> 00:02:00.291 and I had an anatomy lab. Charlie had a medical history. 00:02:26.206 --> 00:02:29.249 He had been a two-pack-a-day smoker. 00:02:29.299 --> 00:02:33.285 Charlie had not exercised in the last 20 years. 00:02:33.285 --> 00:03:50.159 to three-star General 00:03:50.159 --> 00:03:51.743 I think because they wanted to prove 00:03:51.743 --> 00:03:53.215 they have a sense of humor. 00:03:53.215 --> 00:03:56.109 They then sent me to be the Commander of 00:03:56.109 --> 00:03:58.452 Initial Military Training. 00:03:58.452 --> 00:04:03.029 My job was to train the 160,000 or so soldiers 00:04:03.029 --> 00:04:04.976 or correction: civilians, 00:04:04.976 --> 00:04:06.541 that would come into the Army every year 00:04:06.541 --> 00:04:09.019 and turn them into soldiers. 00:04:09.019 --> 00:04:12.604 What I found when I reported to that assignment 00:04:12.604 --> 00:04:14.183 disturbed me. 00:04:14.183 --> 00:04:15.984 Several facts came to my attention. 00:04:15.984 --> 00:04:20.344 First of all, 75% or more 00:04:34.282 --> 00:04:36.516 was because they were obese. 00:04:36.516 --> 00:04:38.996 Of the 25% that could join the Army 00:04:38.996 --> 00:04:41.331 what we found on the first day of basic mandatory requirements for physical education 00:05:34.688 --> 00:05:37.747 between K and 12th grade today. 00:05:37.747 --> 00:05:40.020 Five out of 50. 00:05:40.020 --> 00:05:42.273 Now, you say, "Okay, well that's interesting, 00:05:42.273 --> 00:05:44.741 but what does the Army care about that?" 00:05:44.741 --> 00:05:46.674 Well, we're getting the product of that 00:05:46.674 --> 00:05:48.878 but in addition to second and third order effects 00:05:48.878 --> 00:05:51.093 were young people that were joining our service 00:05:51.093 --> 00:05:53.850 could not run, dodge, jump, tumble, roll 00:05:53.850 --> 00:05:56.830 the kinds of things you expect soldiers to do 00:05:56.830 --> 00:05:58.239 if they're in combat. 00:05:58.239 --> 00:06:00.385 The second thing we found 1983 00:06:40.503 --> 00:06:44.516 and about 15 lbs more of sugar a year. 00:06:44.516 --> 00:06:46.339 Phenomenal statistics. 00:06:46.339 --> 00:06:49.380 But the combination of a lack of physical education 00:06:49.380 --> 00:06:52.838 and an increase of poor nutrition 00:06:52.838 --> 00:06:55.087 was causing secondary effects. 00:06:55.087 --> 00:06:57.595 This is the "O" food group, by the way. 00:06:57.595 --> 00:07:00.833 I started calling it the "O" food group 00:07:00.833 --> 00:07:02.756 because anything that ends in an "O" 00:07:02.756 --> 00:07:05.523 is probably not good for 00:07:37.891 and it wouldn't be a clean break 00:07:37.891 --> 00:07:39.646 but it would be a stress fracture 00:07:39.646 --> 00:07:41.231 that would cause significant problems 00:07:41.231 --> 00:07:45.495 and you can see starting in 2000 that we were beginning to see this 00:07:45.495 --> 00:07:49.384 and this is because the people we were recruiting were just coming of age 00:07:49.384 --> 00:07:51.678 and many of them had not had PE 00:07:51.678 --> 00:07:54.088 and they had started to have the bad nutrition. 00:07:54.088 --> 00:07:57.047 But by 2009 when our new recruits 00:07:57.047 --> 00:07:58.659 were 18 or 19 years old 00:07:58.659 --> 00:08:00.890 they had gone through their entire life 00:08:00.902 --> 00:08:04.093 without having a PE class and dependent on bad
