0:00:00.470,0:00:02.370 There is a box[br]In every crafter’s home 0:00:02.370,0:00:07.169 That is filled with old unfinished projects[br]And stuff you thrifted in the hopes of upcycling. 0:00:07.169,0:00:09.560 That becomes abandoned[br]That becomes forgotten 0:00:09.560,0:00:12.350 Well this is the series that tackles that[br]forgotten box 0:00:12.350,0:00:17.180 This is The Style Pile! 0:00:20.900,0:00:24.860 This is an item that’s only been in the[br]Style Pile box for a couple of weeks now – it 0:00:24.940,0:00:27.819 is a size medium men’s shirt. 0:00:27.819,0:00:32.220 Luci recently took a load of his shirts to[br]the thrift store, but me, being the hoarder 0:00:32.220,0:00:36.910 that I am, saved the ones with nice fabrics[br]to turn into cute clothes for myself! 0:00:36.910,0:00:41.230 So I wanted to turn this gingham shirt into[br]a two-piece skirt and crop-top set. 0:00:41.230,0:00:45.050 First, I laid the shirt down on to my cutting[br]mat and I removed the sleeves. 0:00:45.050,0:00:47.430 And I'm going to save that sleeve fabric for[br]later! 0:00:47.430,0:00:50.870 Next, I cut this now-sleeveless shirt in half[br]like this. 0:00:50.870,0:00:54.480 The bottom half is going to be turned into[br]a skirt! 0:00:54.480,0:00:59.760 So we will focus on the skirt first. 0:00:59.760,0:01:02.970 What I wanted to do first was to make the[br]skirt fit me properly. 0:01:02.970,0:01:06.750 So I turned it inside-out, leaving it buttoned-up[br]for now, and – oh yeah! 0:01:06.750,0:01:08.540 There’s a spare button here! 0:01:08.540,0:01:12.040 I took that off first because the button will[br]come in handy later! 0:01:12.040,0:01:15.610 Anyway, then I took my waist measurement just[br]above my belly button. 0:01:15.610,0:01:17.330 This is 33 inches. 0:01:17.330,0:01:22.700 I halved this waist measurement, giving me[br]16.5 inches, and then lined my tape measure 0:01:22.700,0:01:28.750 up with my skirt, so that the 16.5 inches[br]is exactly in the middle of the skirt. 0:01:28.750,0:01:33.650 Then I drew 2 slightly curved lines extending[br]out from these two points, down to the folded 0:01:33.650,0:01:36.650 edges of the fabric just below the point where[br]my hips start. 0:01:36.650,0:01:41.220 Then, I sewed two lines across here, using[br]my serger to finish off the seams, although 0:01:41.220,0:01:45.520 you can definitely just use a straight stitch,[br]and finish off the seams anyway you like. 0:01:45.520,0:01:47.479 Now remember the sleeves that I cut off before? 0:01:47.479,0:01:49.810 I’m going to use them to make a waistband. 0:01:49.810,0:01:52.200 First I cut the cuffs off the sleeves. 0:01:52.200,0:01:56.720 Then, I laid the sleeves out in a long straight[br]line, like this, matching up the checkers 0:01:56.720,0:01:58.260 between both of the sleeves. 0:01:58.260,0:02:03.220 What I’m going to do next is to cut out[br]a long rectangle from these pieces. 0:02:03.220,0:02:08.170 The rectangle’s length is the waist measurement[br]I took before plus 2 and a half inches (making 0:02:08.170,0:02:12.810 it 35.5 inches long) and about 5 inches wide. 0:02:12.810,0:02:18.200 Now because there were two sleeves the rectangle[br]is in two pieces, so I sewed it together into 0:02:18.200,0:02:22.230 one rectangle by placing these two pieces[br]right-sides together and then sewing along 0:02:22.230,0:02:24.380 this edge with a half-inch seam allowance. 0:02:24.380,0:02:30.420 Now, with this one long rectangle (which has[br]the dimensions 35 by 5 inches due to that 0:02:30.420,0:02:35.400 new seam), I folded it in half lengthways[br]like this, and I sewed down this edge, giving 0:02:35.400,0:02:41.170 me a tube, which I turned inside out quickly[br]using a bodkin (and I showed you all how to 0:02:41.170,0:02:45.720 use a bodkin in my last video – seriously[br]these things are amazing and make turning 0:02:45.720,0:02:48.239 tubes about one million times easier). 0:02:48.239,0:02:53.510 Next, I ironed the waistband, unbuttoned and[br]laid flat the now fitted-skirt, and then I 0:02:53.510,0:02:58.000 placed the waistband down onto the waistline[br]of the skirt, right-sides together, and I 0:02:58.000,0:03:00.200 sewed it onto the skirt like this. 0:03:00.200,0:03:04.480 The waistband ends extend a little bit further[br]than the edges of the skirt, so to finish 0:03:04.480,0:03:09.830 them off I folded them over once, then twice,[br]so that the edge is in line with the rest 0:03:09.830,0:03:13.040 of the skirt, and then I sewed over the top[br]to hold it in place. 0:03:13.040,0:03:17.260 The next thing I had to do was to add extra[br]buttons up the top and bottom of the skirt. 0:03:17.260,0:03:22.670 So I got one of the buttons from that tag[br]from before, I put it down on the waistband, 0:03:22.670,0:03:27.190 lining it up with the other buttons, and then[br]I hand-sewed it on using a needle and thread. 0:03:27.190,0:03:31.980 The other button, I cut off one of the sleeve[br]cuffs, and I attached that down at the bottom 0:03:31.980,0:03:33.840 of the skirt. 0:03:34.980,0:03:39.260 To make button holes for these buttons, first[br]I figured out where the button hole would 0:03:39.270,0:03:44.410 go, so, directly on top of the button when[br]it’s closed and also in line with the other 0:03:44.410,0:03:45.410 button holes. 0:03:45.410,0:03:49.970 Then, I used my buttonhole foot on my sewing[br]machine – as you can see here, the machine’s 0:03:49.970,0:03:53.780 feed dogs are getting a little bit stuck so[br]I'm kind of pulling it through with my hand 0:03:53.780,0:03:56.780 – if your machine is healthy, that shouldn't[br]happen! 0:03:56.780,0:04:00.900 I don't know why it's happening, but anyway,[br]I still managed to make a buttonhole and it 0:04:00.900,0:04:05.849 looks like this – which I then opened up[br]using a small, sharp pair of scissors. 0:04:05.849,0:04:10.550 So the skirt is now done, the other half of[br]the shirt I’m turning into a cute crop top 0:04:10.550,0:04:11.990 with ties! 0:04:11.990,0:04:15.670 I unbuttoned the top and I laid it out flat,[br]and then I cut straight up both the side seams 0:04:15.670,0:04:19.040 and the shoulder seams – but I made sure[br]not to cut through the collar. 0:04:19.040,0:04:21.950 This gives me separate front and back pieces[br]to work with. 0:04:21.950,0:04:27.180 First, I decided to cut straight down the[br]front here – and then I was like, why did 0:04:27.180,0:04:29.139 I do that, that’s not anything… 0:04:29.139,0:04:34.350 I’ve ruined my shirt now… so in an attempt[br]to fix it, I sewed the cut-off pieces back 0:04:34.350,0:04:35.350 on. 0:04:35.350,0:04:38.360 So don't follow that part if you're trying[br]to follow this tutorial. 0:04:38.360,0:04:43.620 OKAY so the ACTUAL thing that I wanted to[br]do, to make the top fit me properly, is to 0:04:43.620,0:04:49.050 lay the front pieces out flat like this, and[br]then I grabbed a fitted top – well, actually 0:04:49.050,0:04:53.520 this is a dress but I’m just going to be[br]using the top part of the dress – I folded 0:04:53.520,0:04:58.330 the top of the dress in half with the FRONT[br]facing out, and I’m going to use just the 0:04:58.330,0:05:03.300 armholes and the sides of this fitted top,[br]NOT the neckline, as a guide to make new armholes 0:05:03.300,0:05:05.290 and new sides on this gingham top. 0:05:05.290,0:05:10.440 So, using this top as a guide, I’m going[br]to cut the gingham fabric here and here. 0:05:10.440,0:05:15.560 I’m adding a whole extra inch to the seam[br]allowance around the armholes because I want 0:05:15.560,0:05:20.810 to do a rolled hem, and I wanted to make the[br]gingham shirt a little bit looser fitting 0:05:20.810,0:05:22.320 than this fitted demin top. 0:05:22.320,0:05:27.290 I’m also angling those side lines a bit[br]further out like THIS because I don’t want 0:05:27.290,0:05:30.270 the top to be as fitted at the waist as the[br]denim one is. 0:05:30.270,0:05:34.750 Then, I folded this half of the front onto[br]the other half, using it as a template to 0:05:34.750,0:05:39.470 cut out the other half, so that the two front[br]pieces will be identical to each other, just 0:05:39.470,0:05:40.600 mirrored! 0:05:42.230,0:05:46.140 I did the same thing for the back of the top,[br]laying the denim dress down on top of it so 0:05:46.152,0:05:51.009 the back of the dress is facing up, and then[br]I used the armholes and the sides - not the 0:05:51.009,0:05:56.520 neckline - to make imaginary cutting lines[br]around the top like this, again leaving one 0:05:56.520,0:06:01.360 extra one inch of seam allowance around the[br]armholes and extra room at the sides, making 0:06:01.360,0:06:06.290 it kind of flare out at the bottom, which[br]I then cut out using my rotary cutter. 0:06:06.290,0:06:11.080 Next, I placed the front pieces down on top[br]of the back piece, making sure it was right-sides 0:06:11.080,0:06:14.180 together, and I sewed it back up at the shoulders. 0:06:14.180,0:06:17.570 And then, once the shoulders were sewn, I[br]matched up the sides of the front and the 0:06:17.570,0:06:21.740 back pieces and then I made new side seams[br]by sewing them together like this. 0:06:23.480,0:06:27.260 Then to finish off the armholes, I hemmed[br]the raw edges of the fabric. 0:06:27.270,0:06:31.580 I did this by turning the top inside-out,[br]and then folding the fabric at the armhole 0:06:31.580,0:06:32.889 down like this. 0:06:32.889,0:06:37.570 Where the fabric was curved around the armhole,[br]I made little slits in the fabric to make 0:06:37.570,0:06:38.990 this hemming easier. 0:06:38.990,0:06:41.430 And then I hemmed all the way around the armholes. 0:06:41.430,0:06:46.270 When I was done that, I folded the hem over[br]again to create a clean rolled hem. 0:06:46.270,0:06:50.259 Lastly, I’m going to use these pieces of[br]the sleeves that I still had leftover to make 0:06:50.259,0:06:51.860 some ties at the front of the top. 0:06:51.860,0:06:55.819 I laid each of these pieces underneath the[br]front part of the top, matching the end up 0:06:55.819,0:06:59.740 with the side seams, and then I cut this bit[br]of fabric so it tapered off towards the bottom 0:06:59.740,0:07:03.740 edge of the top to create a continuous line[br]between the ties and the top. 0:07:03.740,0:07:07.930 I left the fabric thicker in the middle of[br]the tie here, instead of making it a straight 0:07:07.930,0:07:12.230 rectangle, so that I’ll have a bit more[br]coverage at the front of the top – the idea 0:07:12.230,0:07:16.870 is to make the front of the top have a slightly[br]curved hem – you’ll see what I mean soon! 0:07:16.870,0:07:20.990 I then flipped this piece over, placing it[br]right-sides together with the front of the 0:07:20.990,0:07:23.919 top’s bottom edge, and I sewed it on like[br]this. 0:07:23.919,0:07:26.210 I repeated this for the other side… 0:07:26.210,0:07:29.800 And now I have these two ties at the front[br]of my top. 0:07:29.800,0:07:35.660 The very last step was to serge all around[br]the raw edges, using my overlocker here, and 0:07:35.660,0:07:40.010 then I folded these edges up inside the top[br]about half an inch and I used a straight stitch 0:07:40.010,0:07:41.180 to make a hem. 0:07:41.180,0:07:42.400 And with that, I was done! 0:07:42.400,0:07:45.020 So here’s the before and afters! 0:07:47.740,0:07:51.900 [Music Plays] 0:08:14.060,0:08:19.160 I think this new outfit has a very cute, flirty,[br]summery vibe – and it’s absolutely perfect 0:08:19.160,0:08:21.030 for the end of summer here in Sydney. 0:08:21.030,0:08:25.200 I also think that it has quite a vintage-feel[br]and looks pretty cute when paired with red 0:08:25.200,0:08:26.720 lipstick and some dramatic cat-eye eyeliner! 0:08:26.720,0:08:31.240 I hope that you liked this episode of the[br]Style Pile and that it helps give you all 0:08:31.240,0:08:36.909 some inspiration in upcycling clothes for[br]yourself, and tackling your own box of unfinished 0:08:36.909,0:08:37.909 sewing projects! 0:08:37.909,0:08:40.440 Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you all[br]next time! 0:08:40.440,0:08:41.960 Bye! 0:08:46.060,0:08:50.480 Thank you to all of my supporters on Patreon[br]for making these video possible!
