WEBVTT 00:00:00.454 --> 00:00:01.161 Hey everybody. 00:00:01.161 --> 00:00:03.615 Today I'm going to talk with you about Emetophobia, 00:00:03.615 --> 00:00:04.747 So stay tuned. 00:00:11.451 --> 00:00:12.167 So like I said, 00:00:12.167 --> 00:00:14.212 Today I want to talk with you about Emetophobia, 00:00:14.212 --> 00:00:15.513 What is it? 00:00:15.513 --> 00:00:18.242 And if we have it, what do we even do about it? 00:00:18.242 --> 00:00:20.866 So Emetophobia, for those of you who are not aware, 00:00:20.866 --> 00:00:24.951 Is the fear of becoming sick, i.e. vomiting. 00:00:24.951 --> 00:00:30.243 People become so fearful of vomiting that they may not even eat outside their home. 00:00:30.243 --> 00:00:33.303 And the fear of vomiting isn't just, 00:00:33.303 --> 00:00:34.273 It was interesting, 00:00:34.273 --> 00:00:36.441 Because I don't know that much about Emetophobia. 00:00:36.441 --> 00:00:40.003 It falls in the DSM under 'specific phobia', 00:00:40.003 --> 00:00:41.656 And then in the 'other' category. 00:00:41.656 --> 00:00:43.274 So it's not something that I learnt a lot in school. 00:00:43.274 --> 00:00:46.273 It's not something that I have dealt with in my practice. 00:00:46.273 --> 00:00:49.742 And so I asked those of you who told me to do this video, 00:00:49.742 --> 00:00:51.242 I asked you for some resources. 00:00:51.242 --> 00:00:52.273 So thanks for getting those to me. 00:00:52.273 --> 00:00:53.804 It was really great to learn about it. 00:00:53.804 --> 00:00:55.681 And the way that Emetophobia works, 00:00:55.681 --> 00:00:57.625 It's not just that we fear vomiting, 00:00:57.625 --> 00:01:00.732 It's what will happen because of that. 00:01:00.732 --> 00:01:02.701 Like the embarrassment, the shame, 00:01:02.701 --> 00:01:07.917 Or whatever we think is going to happen because of us becoming sick. 00:01:07.917 --> 00:01:09.354 And so people who struggle with this, 00:01:09.354 --> 00:01:10.916 May not leave the house. 00:01:10.916 --> 00:01:12.816 It can get so bad that people don't leave the house, 00:01:12.816 --> 00:01:14.583 Because they don't want to become sick somewhere 00:01:14.583 --> 00:01:17.073 Where they can't get to the toilet in time. 00:01:17.073 --> 00:01:18.783 And it's really that severe for them. 00:01:18.783 --> 00:01:23.696 And a lot of people will put off getting pregnant for fear of morning sickness. 00:01:23.696 --> 00:01:26.783 It's that intense of a fear for them, 00:01:26.783 --> 00:01:29.073 That they will not have children. 00:01:29.073 --> 00:01:30.302 They won't eat out. 00:01:30.302 --> 00:01:35.049 If they feel any kind of gassiness or any GI anything, 00:01:35.049 --> 00:01:36.489 They won't leave the house. 00:01:36.489 --> 00:01:40.636 And so it can be really really difficult and really impair their level of functioning. 00:01:40.636 --> 00:01:43.604 It is hypothesised that people develop this type of phobia, 00:01:43.604 --> 00:01:46.696 Due to a traumatic event involving someone getting sick. 00:01:46.696 --> 00:01:47.925 I know you're thinking, 00:01:47.925 --> 00:01:49.542 'How in the world would that happen?' 00:01:49.542 --> 00:01:52.284 But imagine, as a child potentially, 00:01:52.284 --> 00:01:53.852 Some of the people talked in the forums, 00:01:53.852 --> 00:01:55.297 And there was a lot of information, 00:01:55.297 --> 00:01:58.854 About people maybe being forced to eat a lot of candy, 00:01:58.854 --> 00:02:00.406 Because their mom caught them in the cupboard. 00:02:00.406 --> 00:02:04.186 And they got spanked and abused and they threw up because they ate all this candy. 00:02:04.186 --> 00:02:09.052 Or they became really sick and nauseous after being sexually abused, 00:02:09.052 --> 00:02:10.521 And they threw up all over the place. 00:02:10.521 --> 00:02:11.853 That happens a lot with children. 00:02:11.853 --> 00:02:16.323 And that can be why someone would develop this type of phobia. 00:02:16.323 --> 00:02:18.083 And so because of that, 00:02:18.083 --> 00:02:19.446 Now going into the treatment options, 00:02:19.446 --> 00:02:23.521 A lot of the treatment is very similar to that of people with PTSD. 00:02:23.521 --> 00:02:25.812 I'm going to check my notes to make sure I don't forget anything. 00:02:25.812 --> 00:02:29.583 But one that they recommend a lot is EMDR. 00:02:29.583 --> 00:02:32.521 And for many of you who maybe don't know what EMDR is, 00:02:32.521 --> 00:02:35.521 It is a reprocessing type of therapy, 00:02:35.521 --> 00:02:40.781 Where it helps our brain heal from the trauma that it had in the past. 00:02:40.781 --> 00:02:43.613 And so they use either buzzers in our hands where it goes from left to right, 00:02:43.613 --> 00:02:46.706 Or we follow a light, we follow a finger. 00:02:46.706 --> 00:02:49.966 And it helps our brain kind of heal from the past trauma. 00:02:49.966 --> 00:02:54.237 The other that they offer and recommend is CBT. 00:02:54.237 --> 00:02:56.226 And obviously this has the best track record, 00:02:56.226 --> 00:02:57.756 Because it's something that's been studied the most. 00:02:57.756 --> 00:02:59.072 And it's been around the longest. 00:02:59.072 --> 00:03:03.015 And I will put a link to my CBT video here if you want to watch it, 00:03:03.015 --> 00:03:04.256 If you want to know more about CBT. 00:03:04.256 --> 00:03:07.331 But it causes us to challenge our own fears. 00:03:07.331 --> 00:03:13.041 And changing the falsely held beliefs that we have about vomiting and becoming sick. 00:03:13.041 --> 00:03:15.256 That maybe something bad might happen to us. 00:03:15.256 --> 00:03:17.196 Or something is going to happen. 00:03:17.196 --> 00:03:20.226 Or if we have any gassiness and anything going on in our GI tract, 00:03:20.226 --> 00:03:22.061 It's bad and we can't leave the house. 00:03:22.061 --> 00:03:24.893 CBT helps you challenge those beliefs. 00:03:24.893 --> 00:03:26.301 Step outside the box. 00:03:26.301 --> 00:03:31.955 Try slowly desensitising yourself so that you are able to better participate in life. 00:03:31.955 --> 00:03:33.362 And not feel so trapped. 00:03:33.362 --> 00:03:37.301 And so I hope this helps you better understand what Emetophobia is. 00:03:37.301 --> 00:03:39.561 Why it might be there for you. 00:03:39.561 --> 00:03:41.986 What you can do to help overcome it. 00:03:41.986 --> 00:03:43.852 Because just like everything that I talk about, 00:03:43.852 --> 00:03:45.041 The sooner we get help, 00:03:45.041 --> 00:03:46.153 The sooner we reach out, 00:03:46.153 --> 00:03:47.351 The better. 00:03:47.351 --> 00:03:48.883 There are a lot of treatment options available. 00:03:48.883 --> 00:03:50.324 A lot of people out there to help. 00:03:50.324 --> 00:03:52.092 So please reach out and start talking about it. 00:03:52.092 --> 00:03:55.413 And if you yourself have information and experience with this, 00:03:55.413 --> 00:03:56.276 Let us know below. 00:03:56.276 --> 00:03:58.068 And if you liked this, give it a thumbs up. 00:03:58.068 --> 00:03:59.383 And don't forget to subscribe to my channel, 00:03:59.383 --> 00:04:02.061 Because I put out videos all of the time and you don't want to miss them. 00:04:02.061 --> 00:04:03.612 And I'm all over the interwebs, 00:04:03.612 --> 00:04:04.974 I'm everywhere. 00:04:04.974 --> 00:04:06.081 Where everyone will find me. 00:04:06.081 --> 00:04:07.081 I'll see you next time. 00:04:08.735 --> 00:04:11.352 So like I said, today I'm going to talk about Emetophobia. 00:04:11.352 --> 00:04:15.704 And I actually don't even know if that's exactly how you're supposed to pronounce it. 00:04:15.704 --> 00:04:17.795 But that's how it is in my head. 00:04:17.795 --> 00:04:20.233 How it looks on paper. So.
