0:00:18.242,0:00:20.866 So Emetophobia, for those of [br]you who are not aware, 0:00:20.866,0:00:24.951 Is the fear of becoming sick,[br]i.e. vomiting. 0:00:24.951,0:00:30.243 People become so fearful of vomiting that [br]they may not even eat outside their home. 0:00:30.243,0:00:33.303 And the fear of vomiting isn't just, 0:00:33.303,0:00:34.273 It was interesting, 0:00:34.273,0:00:36.441 Because I don't know that[br]much about Emetophobia. 0:00:36.441,0:00:40.003 It falls in the DSM under[br]'specific phobia', 0:00:40.003,0:00:41.656 And then in the 'other' category. 0:00:41.656,0:00:43.274 So it's not something that [br]I learnt a lot in school. 0:00:43.274,0:00:46.273 It's not something that I have[br]dealt with in my practice. 0:00:46.273,0:00:49.742 And so I asked those of you who 0:01:00.732,0:01:02.701 Like the embarrassment, [br]the shame, 0:01:02.701,0:01:07.917 Or whatever we think is going to happen[br]because of us becoming sick. 0:01:07.917,0:01:09.354 And so people who struggle with this, 0:01:09.354,0:01:10.916 May not leave the house. 0:01:10.916,0:01:12.816 It can get so bad that people [br]don't leave the house, 0:01:12.816,0:01:14.583 Because they don't want to[br]become sick somewhere 0:01:14.583,0:01:17.073 Where they can't get[br]to the toilet in time. 0:01:17.073,0:01:18.783 And it's really that severe for them. 0:01:18.783,0:01:23.696 And a lot of people will put off getting [br]pregnant for fear of morning sickness. 0:01:23.696,0:01:26.783 It's that intense of a fear for them, 0:01:26.783,0:01:29.073 That they will not have children. 0:01:29.073,0:01:30.302 They won't eat out. 0:01:30.302,0:01:35.049 If they feel any kind of gassiness [br]or any GI anything, 0:01:35.049,0:01:36.489 They won't leave the house. 0:01:36.489,0:01:40.636 And so it can be really really difficult and[br]really impair their level of functioning. 0:01:40.636,0:01:43.604 It is hypothesised that people [br]develop this type of phobia, 0:01:43.604,0:01:46.696 Due to a traumatic event involving [br]someone getting sick. 0:01:46.696,0:01:47.925 I know you're thinking, 0:01:47.925,0:01:49.542 'How in the world would that happen?' 0:01:49.542,0:01:52.284 But imagine, as a child potentially, 0:01:52.284,0:01:53.852 Some of the people talked in the forums, 0:01:53.852,0:01:55.297 And there was a lot of information, 0:01:55.297,0:01:58.854 About people maybe being [br]forced to eat a lot of candy, 0:01:58.854,0:02:00.406 Because their mom caught [br]them in the cupboard. 0:02:00.406,0:02:04.186 And they got spanked and abused and they[br]threw up because they ate all this candy. 0:02:04.186,0:02:09.052 Or they became really sick and nauseous[br]after being sexually abused, 0:02:09.052,0:02:10.521 And they threw up all over the place. 0:02:10.521,0:02:11.853 That happens a lot with children. 0:02:11.853,0:02:16.323 And that can be why someone would [br]develop this type of phobia. 0:02:16.323,0:02:18.083 And so because of that, 0:02:18.083,0:02:19.446 Now going into the treatment options, 0:02:19.446,0:02:23.521 A lot of the treatment is very similar[br]to that of people with PTSD. 0:02:23.521,0:02:25.812 I'm going to check my notes to[br]make sure I don't forget anything. 0:02:25.812,0:02:29.583 But one that they recommend a lot is EMDR. 0:02:29.583,0:02:32.521 And for many of you who maybe[br]don't know what EMDR is, 0:02:32.521,0:02:35.521 It is a reprocessing type of therapy, 0:02:35.521,0:02:40.781 Where it helps our brain heal from the[br]trauma that it had in the past. 0:02:40.781,0:02:43.613 And so they use either buzzers in our [br]hands where it goes from left to right, 0:02:43.613,0:02:46.706 Or we follow a light, [br]we follow a finger. 0:02:46.706,0:02:49.966 And it helps our brain kind of [br]heal from the past trauma. 0:02:49.966,0:02:54.237 The other that they offer [br]and recommend is CBT. 0:02:54.237,0:02:56.226 And obviously this has[br]the best track record, 0:02:56.226,0:02:57.756 Because it's something that's [br]been studied the most. 0:02:57.756,0:02:59.072 And it's been around the longest. 0:02:59.072,0:03:03.015
