0:00:06.000,0:00:09.000 Most of us think of the Sun as our friend. 0:00:09.000,0:00:10.000 It helps plants grow, 0:00:10.000,0:00:11.000 keeps us warm, 0:00:11.000,0:00:15.000 and who doesn't love to lie on the beach on a sunny day? 0:00:15.000,0:00:16.000 But for all of it's good qualities, 0:00:16.000,0:00:19.000 the Sun can also be harmful in large amounts. 0:00:19.000,0:00:22.000 That's why we invented sunscreen. 0:00:22.000,0:00:24.000 The purpose of sunscreen is to shield the body 0:00:24.000,0:00:26.000 from the Sun's ultraviolet rays, 0:00:26.000,0:00:28.000 which have several harmful effects, 0:00:28.000,0:00:29.000 including sunburn, 0:00:29.000,0:00:29.000 aging, 0:00:29.000,0:00:32.000 and skin cancer promotion. 0:00:32.000,0:00:33.000 These rays are separated 0:00:33.000,0:00:35.000 by their different wave lengths, 0:00:35.000,0:00:36.000 into types such as UVA 0:00:36.000,0:00:38.000 and UVB, 0:00:38.000,0:00:40.000 which exert a variety of effects in the skin 0:00:40.000,0:00:43.000 due to the absorption patterns of chromophores, 0:00:43.000,0:00:44.000 the parts of the molecules 0:00:44.000,0:00:46.000 responsible for their color. 0:00:46.000,0:00:48.000 The primary two chromophores are hemoglobin, 0:00:48.000,0:00:50.000 found in our red blood cells, 0:00:50.000,0:00:53.000 and melanin, which gives our skin its pigment. 0:00:53.000,0:00:56.000 We know that UVB rays cause the skin to burn. 0:00:56.000,0:00:58.000 The role of UVA rays is less well understood 0:00:58.000,0:01:00.000 and appears to have an effect 0:01:00.000,0:01:02.000 on our tanning response, 0:01:02.000,0:01:03.000 carcinogenesis, 0:01:03.000,0:01:04.000 and aging. 0:01:04.000,0:01:07.000 So, how does the sunscreen protect us from these rays? 0:01:07.000,0:01:09.000 There are two basic types of sunscreen, 0:01:09.000,0:01:11.000 physical and chemical blockers. 0:01:11.000,0:01:13.000 Physical blockers, like zinc oxide 0:01:13.000,0:01:15.000 or titanium dioxide, 0:01:15.000,0:01:18.000 reflect the Sun's rays by acting as a physical barrier. 0:01:18.000,0:01:20.000 If you've seen lifeguards with noses covered in white, 0:01:20.000,0:01:22.000 then you know what this looks like. 0:01:22.000,0:01:24.000 The same ingredients are primary components 0:01:24.000,0:01:25.000 of diaper creams, 0:01:25.000,0:01:28.000 where the goal is also to create a physical barrier. 0:01:28.000,0:01:30.000 Historically, they haven't always been easy to apply 0:01:30.000,0:01:33.000 and were conspicuously visible on the skin, 0:01:33.000,0:01:36.000 but new formulations have made this less of an issue. 0:01:36.000,0:01:37.000 Chemical blockers, on the other hand, 0:01:37.000,0:01:39.000 absorb the Sun's rays. 0:01:39.000,0:01:42.000 They deteriorate more quickly than physical sunscreens 0:01:42.000,0:01:46.000 because their ability to absorb the Sun diminishes. 0:01:46.000,0:01:48.000 Generally, these are more transparent 0:01:48.000,0:01:49.000 when rubbed on the skin, 0:01:49.000,0:01:51.000 but some people develop allergric reactions 0:01:51.000,0:01:53.000 to some of the chemicals. 0:01:53.000,0:01:55.000 Regardless to the type of sunscreen, 0:01:55.000,0:01:56.000 all are subjected to testing 0:01:56.000,0:01:59.000 to determine their sunburn protection factor, 0:01:59.000,0:02:00.000 or SPF. 0:02:00.000,0:02:02.000 This is essentially a measure of the protection 0:02:02.000,0:02:05.000 that the sunscreen will provide from UVB rays 0:02:05.000,0:02:07.000 before one begins to burn. 0:02:07.000,0:02:08.000 But even if you don't burn, 0:02:08.000,0:02:09.000 you still need to use sunscreen 0:02:09.000,0:02:11.000 because unless you live in a cave, 0:02:11.000,0:02:14.000 you're not immune to the effects of the Sun. 0:02:14.000,0:02:16.000 It is true that darker-skinned people 0:02:16.000,0:02:17.000 and those who tan easily 0:02:17.000,0:02:20.000 have more built-in protection from sunburns, 0:02:20.000,0:02:21.000 but they are still vulnerable 0:02:21.000,0:02:23.000 to the effects of UVA. 0:02:23.000,0:02:25.000 Children under the age of six months, 0:02:25.000,0:02:26.000 on the other hand, 0:02:26.000,0:02:28.000 should have almost no sun exposure 0:02:28.000,0:02:29.000 as their protective mechanisms 0:02:29.000,0:02:31.000 are not fully functioning 0:02:31.000,0:02:33.000 and their skin is more likely to absorb 0:02:33.000,0:02:35.000 any sunscreen that is applied. 0:02:35.000,0:02:37.000 Wearing sunscreen helps protect 0:02:37.000,0:02:40.000 against the development of all three types of skin cancer: 0:02:40.000,0:02:42.000 basal cell carcinoma, 0:02:42.000,0:02:44.000 squamous cell carcinoma, 0:02:44.000,0:02:45.000 and melanoma. 0:02:45.000,0:02:47.000 On a daily basis, the DNA in your cells 0:02:47.000,0:02:49.000 is developing mutations and errors 0:02:49.000,0:02:51.000 that are generally handled 0:02:51.000,0:02:53.000 by machinery within your cells, 0:02:53.000,0:02:57.000 but ultraviolet rays from the Sun lead to mutations 0:02:57.000,0:02:59.000 that the cell may not be able to overcome, 0:02:59.000,0:03:00.000 leading to uncontrolled growth 0:03:00.000,0:03:02.000 and eventual skin cancer. 0:03:02.000,0:03:04.000 The scariest thing about this 0:03:04.000,0:03:06.000 is that usually you can't even see it happening 0:03:06.000,0:03:08.000 until its too late. 0:03:08.000,0:03:10.000 But if these concrete risks to your health 0:03:10.000,0:03:13.000 are not enough to convince you to use sunscreen, 0:03:13.000,0:03:16.000 there are aesthetic reasons as well. 0:03:16.000,0:03:17.000 Along with cigarette smoking, 0:03:17.000,0:03:20.000 sun damage is the leading cause of premature aging. 0:03:20.000,0:03:22.000 Photoaging from chronic sun exposure 0:03:22.000,0:03:25.000 leads to a loss of elasticity in the skin, 0:03:25.000,0:03:28.000 in other words, making it look saggy. 0:03:28.000,0:03:29.000 Take a look at this truck driver 0:03:29.000,0:03:32.000 who's left side was chronically exposed to the sun 0:03:32.000,0:03:33.000 and notice the difference. 0:03:33.000,0:03:35.000 This is an important point. 0:03:35.000,0:03:38.000 Car windows block UVB, the burn rays, 0:03:38.000,0:03:41.000 but not UVA, the aging rays. 0:03:41.000,0:03:44.000 It is recommended to use sunscreen daily, 0:03:44.000,0:03:45.000 but you should pay special attention 0:03:45.000,0:03:47.000 before prolonged sun exposure 0:03:47.000,0:03:48.000 or when at the beach 0:03:48.000,0:03:50.000 or among snow 0:03:50.000,0:03:52.000 since the reflectivity of water and ice 0:03:52.000,0:03:54.000 amplifies the Sun's rays. 0:03:54.000,0:03:56.000 For these cases, apply about an ounce 0:03:56.000,0:03:58.000 fifteen to thirty minutes before you go out 0:03:58.000,0:04:01.000 and once again soon after you get outside. 0:04:01.000,0:04:04.000 After that, you should reapply it every two to three hours, 0:04:04.000,0:04:06.000 especially after swimming or sweating. 0:04:06.000,0:04:08.000 Otherwise you should wear protective clothing 0:04:08.000,0:04:12.000 with ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. 0:04:12.000,0:04:13.000 Stay in shaded areas, 0:04:13.000,0:04:15.000 such as under trees or an umbrella, 0:04:15.000,0:04:16.000 and avoid the sun at the peak hours 0:04:16.000,0:04:18.000 of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 0:04:18.000,0:04:20.000 And what's the best kind of sunscreen? 0:04:20.000,0:04:22.000 Everyone will have their preference, 0:04:22.000,0:04:24.000 but look for the following things: 0:04:24.000,0:04:25.000 broad spectra, 0:04:25.000,0:04:27.000 SPF of at least 30, 0:04:27.000,0:04:29.000 and water-resistant. 0:04:29.000,0:04:31.000 A light moisturizer with SPF 30 0:04:31.000,0:04:33.000 should be good for daily use. 0:04:33.000,0:04:35.000 Take note if you decide to use a spray. 0:04:35.000,0:04:38.000 They take several coats to effectively cover your skin, 0:04:38.000,0:04:40.000 like painting a wall with a spray can 0:04:40.000,0:04:41.000 versus a paint brush. 0:04:41.000,0:04:43.000 So, enjoy the sun, 0:04:43.000,0:04:46.000 but enjoy it with sunscreen.
