WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Four years after arriving in the United States, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like any typical 16-year old, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I went to get my driver's permit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After I showed the clerk my immigration papers, my green card, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she told me it was fake. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Don't come back here again," she said. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's how I found out I was in America illegally. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I'm still here illegally. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm a journalist and filmmaker. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I live in stories, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and what I've learned 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that what most people don't understand about immigration 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is what they don't understand about themselves: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their families old migration stories and the processes they had to go through 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 before green cards and walls even existed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or what shaped their understanding of citizenship itself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was born in the Philippines. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I was 12, my mother sent me to live with her parents, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my grandparents, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or, as we say in Tagalog, Lolo and Lola. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lolo's name was ??. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When he legally emigrated to America and became a naturalized citizen, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he changed his name from ?? to Ted, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after Ted Danson 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from the TV show "Cheers." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Can't get any more American than that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lolo's favorite song was Frank Sinatra's "My Way," 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and when it came to figuring out how to get his only grandson, me, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to America, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he decided to do it his way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to Lolo, there was no easy and simple way to get me here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so Lolo saved up 4,500 dollars -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's a lot of money for a security guard 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who made no more than eight dollars an hour -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to pay for the fake green card and for a smuggler 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to bring me to the US. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that's how I got here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can't tell you how many times people tell me that their ancestors 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 came to America "the right way," 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to which I remind them, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America's definition of "the right way" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 has been changing ever since the first ship of settlers dropped anchor. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America as we know it is more than a piece of land, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 particularly because the land that now makes up the United States of America 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 used to belong to other people in other countries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America as we know it is also more than a nation of immigrants. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are two groups of Americans who are not immigrants: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Native Americans, who were indigenous to this land, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and who were killed in acts of genocide; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and African Americans, who were kidnapped, shipped, and enslaved 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to build this country. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 America is above all an idea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 however unrealized and imperfect, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one that only exists because the first settlers came here freely 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 without worry of citizenship. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So where did you come from? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How did you get here? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Who paid? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All across America, in front of diverse audiences -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 conservatives and progressives, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 high school students and senior citizens -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I've asked those questions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a person of color, I always get asked where I'm from, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as in, "Where are you from from?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I've asked white people where they're from from too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After asking a student at the University of Georgia 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where he was from, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he said, "I'm American." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "I know," I said, "but where are you from?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "I'm white," he replied. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "But white is not a country," I said. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Where are your ancestors from?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When he replied with a shrug, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I said, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Well where did you come from? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How did you get here? Who paid?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He couldn't answer. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't think you can talk about America as America 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 without answering those three core questions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Immigration is America's lifeline, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how this country has replenished itself for centuries, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from the settlers and the revolutionaries who populated the original 13 colonies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the millions of immigrants, predominantly from Europe, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who relentlessly colonized this land. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Even though Native Americans were already here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and had their own tribal identities and ideas about citizenship, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they were not considered US citizens until the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act that Black Americans fought for 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 inspired the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which ended America's race-based exclusionary system 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that had lasted for 40 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I could go on and on here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but my point, my larger point, is this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How much do any of us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whether immigrants of the past or the present, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 know of these crucial parts of American history? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How much of this history makes up the actual US citizenship test? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Have you ever seen it? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a mostly oral test, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and government officers ask applicants up to 10 of the 100 questions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To pass, applicants must get at least six answers right. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I looked at the test recently, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I was aghast at the questions posed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what constitutes acceptable answers to the glaring omissions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a question about the Statue of Liberty, where it is. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's no question about Ellis Island, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about the United States as an immigrant nation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the countless anti-immigrant laws that were passed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's nothing about Native American history. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a question about what Martin Luther King, Jr. did, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but largely there's inadequate and irresponsible contexts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about African Americans. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here's an example. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Question number 74 under the American history section 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 asks applicants to "name one problem that led to the Civil War." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are three acceptable answers: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 slavery, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 states rights, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 economic reasons. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Did my Lola and Lolo get that question? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If they did get the question, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 do they even understand the history behind it? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How about my uncles and aunties and cousins 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and millions of other immigrants who had to take that test 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to become Americans. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What do immigrants know about America before we get here? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What kind of citizenship are we applying for? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And is that the same kind of citizenship we actually want to be a part of? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Come to think of it -- I've been thinking a lot about this -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what does dignified citizenship look like? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How can I ask for it when I just arrived here 26 years ago, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when Black and Native people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who have been here in America for hundreds of years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are still waiting for theirs? NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of my favorite writers is Toni Morrison. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In 1996, a year before I found out I was in the country illegally, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my eighth grade class was assigned to read "The Bluest Eye," 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Morrison's first book. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Instantly, the book challenged me to ask hard questions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why does Pecola Breedlove, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this young Black girl at the center of the book, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 why did she want blue eyes? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Who told her to want it? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why did she believe them? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Morrison said she wrote the book to illustrate what happens 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when a person surrenders to what she called "the master narrative." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Definitions, Morrison said, belonged to the definers, not the defined. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Once I realized that I was here illegally, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I convinced myself that if I was not a legal citizen by birth or by law, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 another kind of citizenship was possible. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Citizenship as participation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I engage. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I engage with all kinds of Americans, even Americans who don't want me here. NOTE Paragraph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Citizenship as contribution. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I give back to my community in whatever ways I can. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As an undocumented entrepreneur, and yes there is such a thing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I've employed many US citizens.
