9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As dawn breaks over a moveable city [br]of ten thousand yurts, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Queen Boraqchin is in [br]for a rude awakening. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A rogue sheep has slipped past her [br]servants and guards 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and bolted into her yurt, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where he springs into bed [br]and bleats in her ear. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Although she’s the formidable khatun [br]of the Golden Horde, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a huge kingdom in the Mongolian Empire, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Boraqchin has a hands-on [br]approach to ruling. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She’s been married to Batu Khan, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the fearsome grandson [br]of Genghis Khan himself, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 since she was fifteen – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and while her husband is out on his raids, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she juggles the duties of flocks, [br]family and empire at home. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This makes her the manager – [br]and the mover – of a city of thousands. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Twice a year, Boraqchin moves the city [br]between two seasonal camping grounds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This ensures constant water [br]and lush grass in summer, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and protection from harsh winds in winter. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The whole operation requires [br]weeks of strict planning, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 liaising with the other camps in her [br]domain, strategic delegation – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the patience to move at the speed [br]of dawdling animals. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today is moving day, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and she’ll have to direct throngs of her[br]ladies, commanders, slaves and animals 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 up the river Volga for the summer. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As Boraqchin steps outside, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she’s greeted by a commotion – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her unwanted visitor is now running [br]circles around her stewards. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They’re attempting to stow her possessions[br]securely into wagons. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Boraqchin orders them [br]to get it under control – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but she’s the only one quick [br]enough to catch the stray. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She next supervises her ladies who are[br]unpinning her yurt 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and lifting it onto its special wagon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It requires a team of twenty oxen to pull, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and Boraqchin wouldn’t trust anyone [br]to steer it but herself. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Next, Boraqchin and her woolly companion [br]meet with the guards. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She orders them to keep close watch 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on her husband's special reception yurt [br]and port-able throne during the journey. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They’ll also act as outriders, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and she tells them [br]how to secure the route, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 surround her for safety – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and keep the animals in check. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But when the sheep finally breaks free [br]and makes for the fields, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the guards can barely keep up 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as it scampers through crowds [br]packing up their own yurts. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Exasperated, Boraqchin rides down [br]to the pastures herself. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When she gets there, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she catches sight of the troublesome sheep[br]wriggling into the middle of a flock. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When she follows him in, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he’s nestled next to a ewe, his mother. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She’s pregnant,[br]and seems to be in pain. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With a start, Boraqchin realizes [br]that this ewe’s impending delivery 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 has been forgotten in [br]the flurry of moving day. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There’s no time to find a shepherd – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 instead, Boraqchin rolls up her sleeves, [br]greases her arm 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and helps the ewe give birth to two new [br]additions to the empire. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Leaving the lambs and their mother, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Boraqchin dashes back to camp. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here the final touches have been put to packing, [br]and vehicles are starting to line up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This vast procession starts with the queen 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and two hundred wagons [br]filled with her treasures. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Next up are the junior wives and crew, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then the concubines – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and this is only Boraqchin's camp. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 After this comes the second imperial camp 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 led by another senior wife, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then two more camps, [br]also led by capable wives. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Boraqchin has been checking in [br]with them for weeks 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to ensure a smooth departure [br]and orderly queue. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But they only make up the [br]royal portion of the line – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 behind them winds [br]the entire civilian city, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which includes holy men [br]with portable chapels and mosques, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 families, tradesmen, and shepherds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Finally, Boraqchin settles into her wagon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It’ll take weeks to reach [br]their destination – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but over the course of the journey, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she’ll keep everyone expertly in check – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from her proud children [br]and attentive subjects, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the most meandering sheep [br]at the back of line.
