0:00:03.649,0:00:07.220 Hello! Welcome back to another episode of Make Thrift Buy! And as always, this is the 0:00:07.220,0:00:11.400 show where YOU send in items of clothing or[br]accessories that you’ve seen on the internet, 0:00:11.400,0:00:15.579 and then I do my best to recreate them. Now[br]a couple of people have challenged me to try 0:00:15.579,0:00:20.609 and do ombre tights! I've actually owned a[br]pair of these back in the day – but this 0:00:20.609,0:00:27.199 was back in 2012, and, let’s be honest – most[br]tights do NOT last for 4 whole years. Which 0:00:27.199,0:00:32.050 definitely makes spending $20-$50 on a pair[br]of ombre tights – which is what I found 0:00:32.050,0:00:35.610 these kind of tights online for – pretty[br]prohibitive for most of us. 0:00:35.610,0:00:38.130 So, I’m going to try and make some ombre[br]tights for myself! 0:00:38.130,0:00:39.140 Let's get started! 0:00:39.140,0:00:41.840 Okay, the obvious things that I needed for[br]this project were: 0:00:41.840,0:00:43.570 - Thick white tights[br]- And dye. 0:00:43.570,0:00:47.210 I’m using this Rit dye which is made for[br]synthetic material, which is what you will 0:00:47.210,0:00:48.750 need if you’re dying something like tights. 0:00:48.750,0:00:52.900 Alright, so! Welcome to my kitchen, which[br]is where I will be doing my dyeing. 0:00:52.900,0:00:56.750 The first thing I did here was to rinse out[br]any “finishes” from my tights by soaking 0:00:56.750,0:00:59.400 them in cold water for about 5 minutes. 0:00:59.400,0:01:02.610 Another thing that I’m going to need for[br]dyeing the tights is a large, stainless steel 0:01:02.610,0:01:06.290 pot. Now… I just wanted to cut in and say[br]right now – check back in at the end with 0:01:06.290,0:01:11.730 me about this; I don't think that it's a particularly[br]good idea to use a pot that you're planning 0:01:11.730,0:01:15.240 on using for cooking later on, but I'll go[br]through that in a bit. 0:01:15.240,0:01:19.909 Anyway, I filled the pot about 1/3rds with[br]water, and I turned my stovetop on to a medium 0:01:19.909,0:01:25.130 setting so that my water would heat up to[br]around 75 degrees Celcius, or 167 Fahrenheit. 0:01:25.130,0:01:29.850 I also put some gloves on so I wouldn’t[br]dye my hands orange, but in retrospect, rubber 0:01:29.850,0:01:33.600 washing-up gloves would be better than these[br]so that you’re also protected from hot water 0:01:33.600,0:01:34.850 and potential burns. 0:01:34.850,0:01:39.340 Now, you DON’T want your water to boil.[br]I got the water in the pot up to about 75 0:01:39.340,0:01:42.300 degrees Celcius, or 167 Fahrenheit. 0:01:42.300,0:01:43.870 And now, the dyeing begins! 0:01:43.870,0:01:49.340 So, with this dye you’re supposed to use[br]about 1 bottle of dye per 2 pounds of fabric, 0:01:49.340,0:01:55.100 I guess if you want a really strong colour.[br]But I only want to dye half my tights; I also 0:01:55.100,0:01:59.810 didn’t have scales... in the end I kind[br]of figured out that I would need about 1/10th 0:01:59.810,0:02:02.670 of a bottle for one pair of tights. 0:02:02.670,0:02:05.490 And in this whole process, I'm not going to[br]be particularly accurate - I'm just going 0:02:05.490,0:02:07.510 to kind of eyeball it as I go. 0:02:07.510,0:02:12.029 The first thing that I did was to put a really[br]tiny amount of dye into my pot – so about 0:02:12.029,0:02:15.290 a couple of spoonfulls – and then I mixed[br]it around. 0:02:15.290,0:02:20.139 Then, I took my soaking tights out of the[br]sink, wrung out the water, and carefully plopped 0:02:20.139,0:02:25.219 them into the pot for literally about 20 seconds.[br]This will dye the entire tights a kinda pastel 0:02:25.219,0:02:28.889 peach colour, which will hopefully make the[br]ombre more subtle later on. While doing this, 0:02:28.889,0:02:33.659 I held the top end out so that I didn't burn[br]my hand, and I also tried to mix them around 0:02:33.659,0:02:36.939 a bit so that the dye would get to every part[br]of the tights. 0:02:38.260,0:02:40.260 And then, I dumped them straight 0:02:40.260,0:02:44.299 back into that cold water, rinsed the dye[br]out, and then I wrung the water out. 0:02:44.299,0:02:47.989 Then, I tipped quite a bit more dye into the[br]pot, and I mixed it around. 0:02:47.989,0:02:51.969 Now, here I’ve set up two pots. This pot[br]will be for the half of the tights that I 0:02:51.969,0:02:55.409 don't want to dye anymore, while this pot[br]will be for the other half of the tights that 0:02:55.409,0:02:59.799 I do want to dye a stronger colour. So I put[br]the top half of the tights – the part that’s 0:02:59.799,0:03:03.989 going to remain light-coloured, into this[br]empty pot. Then, I carefully put the rest 0:03:03.989,0:03:09.709 of the tights, from the toes up to about just[br]under halfway, into the dyeing pot. 0:03:12.139,0:03:15.659 Then, I carefully stirred the fabric around, to make sure that the dye is getting to all of 0:03:15.659,0:03:16.790 the fabric! 0:03:16.790,0:03:21.969 And then, after they were in for about 30[br]seconds, I pulled the tights out about 1 inch. 0:03:21.969,0:03:27.760 Then, I stirred, waited another 30 seconds,[br]pulled them out about 1 inch, stirred, waited 0:03:27.760,0:03:30.749 30 seconds and pulled them out another inch. 0:03:30.749,0:03:35.189 After doing this a few times, it’s time[br]to add more dye to get a stronger orange as 0:03:35.189,0:03:39.180 we move further down the tights to create[br]that nice gradient ombre effect. 0:03:39.180,0:03:45.099 So, I poured in a couple more tablespoons…[br]or so?, stirred to mix the dye evenly, and 0:03:45.099,0:03:49.499 then I immediately pulled the tights out one[br]inch. Then, I stirred, and I waited about 0:03:49.499,0:03:52.949 1 minute this time, and then I pulled them[br]out yet another inch. 0:03:52.949,0:03:57.709 Then, I poured in more dye, stirred, then[br]left the tights to sit for about 30 seconds 0:03:57.709,0:04:02.329 this time, pulled them out about an inch,[br]and then finally, I left the very tips of 0:04:02.329,0:04:05.069 the tights to soak for about five minutes. 0:04:05.069,0:04:08.779 When the five minutes was up, I carefully[br]removed the tights from the dye bath and brought 0:04:08.779,0:04:10.459 them over to my stainless steel sink. 0:04:10.459,0:04:14.970 In my sink, I immediately rinsed the tights[br]with cool water. Now – this is important 0:04:14.970,0:04:18.139 – I rinsed the tights with the coloured[br]bit at the bottom and the lighter part at 0:04:18.139,0:04:22.889 the top. I didn’t want the dye to run back[br]up the tights into the lighter sections, so 0:04:22.889,0:04:27.280 it’s important that I rinsed them this way![br]I stopped rinsing once the water running off 0:04:27.280,0:04:28.509 the tights is clear. 0:04:28.509,0:04:34.030 Then, according to the Rit Dye instructions,[br]I needed to handwash the entire thing again 0:04:34.030,0:04:39.479 using mild detergent in warm water. Then I[br]rinsed them off again in cool water, and FINALLY, 0:04:39.479,0:04:43.470 I let them dry, by hanging them up like this[br]so that the dyed parts are at the bottom. 0:04:43.470,0:04:48.430 Now, I had a bunch of dye left so I also decided[br]to also try and refresh a scuzzy old pair 0:04:48.430,0:04:54.009 of white tights that I have owned for years,[br]and also, a pair of white knee-high socks! 0:04:54.009,0:04:55.699 And with that, I was done! 0:04:55.699,0:04:56.779 So, how did I go? 0:04:56.780,0:04:58.960 [music plays] 0:05:32.360,0:05:35.580 So, that was it! My conclusion is:[br][scissor snipping sound effect] 0:05:35.580,0:05:40.419 Alright – the issue of using a cooking pot[br]to dye things. Now, I had googled this really 0:05:40.419,0:05:45.419 briefly before starting the whole dyeing process[br]and the Rit website themselves said that it 0:05:45.419,0:05:50.830 was okay to use a cooking pot as long as you[br]cleaned it really well with bleach afterwards, 0:05:50.830,0:05:52.759 so I was like "great! Let's go then!" 0:05:52.759,0:05:57.900 It was only afterwards that I did some more[br]googling and um – scared myself a little 0:05:57.900,0:06:02.389 bit with stuff that other websites said – because[br]lot of other websites said that you should 0:06:02.389,0:06:04.590 NOT be using this pot again for cooking. 0:06:04.590,0:06:10.979 So, you know, to be safe, probably don't use[br]a pot that you plan to cook food in afterwards! 0:06:10.979,0:06:12.669 That's my disclaimer. 0:06:12.669,0:06:18.250 So yeah - I totally ruined our one good big[br]cooking pot. Oops! 0:06:18.250,0:06:25.229 This was the first time I ever used fabric[br]dyes before and – apart from the whole ruining-my-good-cooking-pot 0:06:25.229,0:06:27.879 thing – this was a really easy project! 0:06:27.879,0:06:32.469 The total cost of the first pair of tights[br]came out to about $10, and the pair of tights 0:06:32.469,0:06:36.629 and socks that I already owned even cheaper[br]still – and after doing three pairs I still 0:06:36.629,0:06:40.819 have about 2 thirds of this bottle left! And[br]now, I pretty much want to dye everything 0:06:40.819,0:06:44.900 ombre. What are some other synthetic materials[br]that I'd be able to dye orange? If you think 0:06:44.900,0:06:46.889 of any, let me know in the comments down below! 0:06:46.889,0:06:49.819 And I now have a designated dyeing pot as[br]well. Yay! 0:06:49.819,0:06:53.550 Got a suggestion for a make thrift buy video?[br]Then leave it in down in the comments below! 0:06:53.550,0:06:57.099 And don’t forget – I now have a Patreon[br]account as well!
