As a Switch owner myself, I can tell you that indie titles are all we have 00:01:06.920 --> 00:01:11.250 to play while we wait for the next Wii U port to come out. Shovel Knight’s launch on Switch 00:01:11.250 --> 00:01:15.539 sold faster than any other platform release, and the game was almost three years old by 00:01:15.539 --> 00:01:20.299 then. But if new 00:01:42.259 --> 00:01:47.410 footage wasn’t enough, Team Cherry also held a Reddit AMA on r/nintendoswitch. In this post, Team Cherry teased that the update would 00:02:23.870 --> 00:02:28.000 feature a new game mode. Now when I first heard this, I thought it was obviously going 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.480 to be some form of Hollow Knight Battle Royale. People have been begging Team Cherry for this 00:02:32.480 --> 00:02:37.350 game mode since the Kickstarter began back in 2014. I for one would love to run around 00:02:37.350 --> 00:02:41.770 and smack other players with a fucking frying pan. Well maybe not a frying pan, but you 00:02:41.770 --> 00:02:42.770 get the idea. 00:02:42.770 --> 00:02:47.850 Well, it turns out I was wrong, because during the Nintendo Live Treehouse Event, Ari and 00:02:47.850 --> 00:02:51.510 William showcased some of the new update and explained that Gods & Glory™ would be Team 00:02:51.510 --> 00:02:54.120 Cherry’s take on a boss rush mode. 00:02:54.120 --> 00:02:59.250 “But we didn’t want to just make a boss rush mode, we wanted to do it in our way. 00:02:59.250 --> 00:03:04.079 And what that meant was, we wanted to integrate it completely into the game experience. We 00:03:04.079 --> 00:03:09.780 wanted to make sure there’s a narrative in there. We wanted to make sure that it’s 00:03:09.780 --> 00:03:14.270 all part of the Knight’s journey, and it’s not like a separate divided mode from them 00:03:14.270 --> 00:03:15.270 to play.” 00:03:15.270 --> 00:03:19.459 So in other words, Team Cherry wanted to fit a boss rush mode into the game that still 00:03:19.459 --> 00:03:24.079 made sense lorewise. And to do this, Team Cherry has introduced a new character called 00:03:24.079 --> 00:03:25.079 the Godseeker. 00:03:25.079 --> 00:03:29.640 But before we get into that, let’s talk about the mechanics behind this new boss rush 00:03:29.640 --> 00:03:33.260 mode. What we see in the Treehouse Live event is that there are different arenas in this 00:03:33.260 --> 00:03:38.221 new area called Godhome, where the Knight faces off against a selection of bosses. The 00:03:38.221 --> 00:03:42.390 player also has the option to bind certain abilities to make the match more difficult. 00:03:42.390 --> 00:03:46.360 The game appears to keep track of which bindings you’ve beaten each area with. After William 00:03:46.360 --> 00:03:50.810 defeats the last boss, we see one of the five empty notches get filled on the archway above 00:03:50.810 --> 00:03:54.859 the door. This makes me think that the other four notches represent each of the different 00:03:54.859 --> 00:03:58.189 bindings that the player can enable for the arena. 00:03:58.189 --> 00:04:02.519 In this first arena, we see William Pellen face off against the Vengefly King, the Dung 00:04:02.519 --> 00:04:08.890 Defender, The Mega Moss Charger, Hornet and Paintmaster Sheo. Now during the Treehouse 00:04:08.890 --> 00:04:12.450 event, Ari Gibson mentioned that some of the old bosses were being tweaked for this new 00:04:12.450 --> 00:04:17.459 boss rush area. We can actually see this in the footage provided. In the original game, 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:22.860 the Knight could fight the Massive Moss Charger, but here, it’s the Mega Moss Charger. 00:04:22.860 --> 00:04:26.700 So it looks like some of the more lackluster bosses might be getting a tune up, which is 00:04:26.700 --> 00:04:30.360 pretty cool. Another character that might be getting a treatment is the Hollow Knight, 00:04:34.830 --> 00:04:38.680 albeit in a slightly different way. Something important to note here is that the Hollow 00:04:42.330 --> 00:04:46.360 Knight is lacking the giant crack on his shell. This crack first appeared at the start of 00:04:46.360 --> 00:04:50.210 the game, when the Radiance began seeping out of the Hollow Knight and can be seen during 00:04:50.210 --> 00:04:54.331 the battle with the Hollow Knight. Also it looks like the Knight is wearing armor. The 00:04:54.331 --> 00:04:58.180 armor plating on his shoulders is clearly absent on the statue found in the City of 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:02.300 Tears. So it looks like we might be facing a younger version of the Hollow Knight, with 00:05:02.300 --> 00:05:06.620 a moveset possibly more based on swordplay than just mindless attacks. 00:05:06.620 --> 00:05:10.450 They also show off the Radiance in the teaser trailer. Is it possible we are going to get 00:05:10.450 --> 00:05:15.170 another fight with her too? Will she be any different? The Godhome looks a lot like where 00:05:15.170 --> 00:05:20.460 the Radiance battle took place, so maybe these two beings are more closely related than we 00:05:20.460 --> 00:05:21.460 realize. 00:05:21.460 --> 00:05:25.900 Anyway, once the Godseeker’s quest is finished, a new mode is unlocked, which dataminers have 00:05:25.900 --> 00:05:30.420 been able to figure out is called God’s Glory. There is also a sprite design for the 00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:35.340 new mode. So is this just another version of the Boss Rush Mode? That seems pretty weird 00:05:35.340 --> 00:05:40.169 since it is listed with Normal Mode and Steel Soul Mode. Maybe this new mode will be tied 00:05:40.169 --> 00:05:44.560 to the whole “glorifying charm” aspect Team Cherry announced in the Kickstarter update. 00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:49.190 Alright, so we talked about some of the mechanics of this new update. Now let’s talk about 00:05:49.190 --> 00:05:51.270 lore. In the Treehouse event, we see the Knight 00:05:51.270 --> 00:05:56.330 unlock the chains on a cocoon with a simple key. Then the corpse of a giant bug falls 00:05:56.330 --> 00:06:01.009 out. Now I think it’s fair to argue that this is the Godseeker. Obviously the creature 00:06:01.009 --> 00:06:05.400 was chained up, like the Kickstarter update said. Also, the creature can be dream nailed, 00:06:05.400 --> 00:06:08.950 allowing the Knight to enter an area called Godhome. 00:06:08.950 --> 00:06:12.970 But this is where things get confusing. The kickstarter update talks about how the Godseeker 00:06:12.970 --> 00:06:17.830 quest will expand the player’s romance options. Is Team Cherry saying we can romanic this 00:06:17.830 --> 00:06:19.220 corpse? 00:06:21.200 --> 00:06:25.300 ♫I’ve been really tryiiinnnggg, baby!♫ 00:06:25.900 --> 00:06:26.400 [THUD] 00:06:27.260 --> 00:06:31.600 Of course it seems like the Godseeker might still be around in the Godhome. It’s a pretty common theme that we see with both Grimm and 00:06:40.129 --> 00:06:45.580 the Pale King. In the Treehouse event, there is never any opportunity to talk to this character, 00:06:45.580 --> 00:06:48.889 so we still don’t know what Team Cherry is talking about with all of the this romance 00:06:48.889 --> 00:06:49.889 stuff. 00:06:49.889 --> 00:06:54.720 So yeah, why is a chained up cocoon sitting in a junkpit in the Royal Waterways? The easy 00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:59.129 explanation, and my own personal belief, is that the Godseeker was yet another powerful 00:06:59.129 --> 00:07:03.020 being that the Pale King attempted to hide away from the world. It’s pretty obvious 00:07:03.020 --> 00:07:07.259 that the Pale King didn’t really want to share his kingdom with other powerful beings. 00:07:07.259 --> 00:07:12.270 He locked away the Radiance. He deemed lifeblood, a blue liquidy goop connected to another powerful 00:07:12.270 --> 00:07:17.479 being, a heresy. And he possibly had the grubs imprisoned because of some holy power they 00:07:17.479 --> 00:07:22.930 had. It is kind of strange, though. The Radiance had three layers of protection over her, while 00:07:22.930 --> 00:07:27.360 the grubs were spread out and hidden all across Hallownest. But the Godseeker can be unlocked 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:32.159 with a simple key. I gotta say, the Pale King got a little lazy with this one. 00:07:32.159 --> 00:07:36.290 Similar to Grimm, I am guessing that the Godseeker’s quest will involve something to do with keeping 00:07:36.290 --> 00:07:40.780 herself alive. As for what this quest is, my guess is that the Godseeker is searching 00:07:40.780 --> 00:07:45.911 for a being that is worthy of the title “God”. The Kickstarter description for the content 00:07:45.911 --> 00:07:50.620 pack reads “Take your place amongst the Gods in an epic celebration of Hallownest's 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:55.240 Glory and the final chapter of the Knight's journey.” So the Godseeker watches you fight 00:07:55.240 --> 00:08:00.729 all of these bosses, and by the end, might elevate you to the status of God somehow. 00:08:00.729 --> 00:08:05.919 So how does finding a God help the Godseeker prolong her existence? I don’t know. It’s 00:08:05.919 --> 00:08:11.639 possible that she seeks out Gods so she can kill them or maybe have crazy bug sex with 00:08:11.639 --> 00:08:18.199 them to create another more powerful baby God bug thing. I know that sounds weird but 00:08:18.199 --> 00:08:22.129 it’s pretty par for the coarse when the rest of Hollow Knight’s lore is concerned 00:08:22.129 --> 00:08:26.419 One final note, In the Switch trailer, we see that the Godseeker is no longer on the 00:08:26.419 --> 00:08:30.930 throne. Is this because she only watches each arena fight once, or is there some other reason 00:08:30.930 --> 00:08:34.530 why she isn’t there? Do we have to kill her or something? 00:08:34.530 --> 00:08:41.450 Let’s shift gears and talk about the Nailmasters. So the three Nailmasters, Sheo, Mato and Oro 00:08:41.450 --> 00:08:46.600 were all trained by the Great Nailsage, who we know is Sly. Nailmaster Sheo, who lives 00:08:46.600 --> 00:08:51.589 in Greenpath, eventually gave up his nail to pursue a different craft, drawing Nailsmith 00:08:51.589 --> 00:08:56.651 like he draws those french girl. The other two Nailmasters, Oro and Mato, don’t seem 00:08:56.651 --> 00:08:57.800 to get along very well. 00:08:57.800 --> 00:09:02.610 The two have very different personalities, with Oro, the brother found in Kingdom’s 00:09:02.610 --> 00:09:07.450 Edge, wanting you to leave him alone. Mato, who resides in the Howling Cliffs, however, 00:09:07.450 --> 00:09:12.880 says that he basically considers the Knight his child after meeting it like twice. Oro 00:09:12.880 --> 00:09:17.630 seems to detest Mato’s sense of loyalty and honor, and his Dream Nail dialogue implies 00:09:17.630 --> 00:09:22.550 that Oro’s choices in life were justified in his eyes, but that Mato won’t even listen 00:09:22.550 --> 00:09:28.589 to him. Also, Oro is the only Nailmaster who charges Geo in order to receive training. 00:09:28.589 --> 00:09:34.120 The main conflict between these two bugs is that Oro owes something to Mato. Mato reassures 00:09:34.120 --> 00:09:38.589 us that he has not forgotten about this debt, while Oro tells us that Mato will have to 00:09:38.589 --> 00:09:43.529 wait a little while longer. Considering the fact that Oro charges Geo for his lessons, 00:09:43.529 --> 00:09:47.920 I’m guessing he owes Mato money. But that doesn’t help us understand what Oro’s 00:09:47.920 --> 00:09:52.470 lifestyle choices were. Was he turning tricks on the street or something? 00:09:52.470 --> 00:09:57.740 More interesting than the Nailmasters, however, is our good buddy Sly. We know that Sly is 00:09:57.740 --> 00:10:01.779 the Great Nailsage who trained all of the Nailmasters, but we don’t know much about 00:10:01.779 --> 00:10:06.240 how Sly ended up as a shopkeeper in Dirtmouth. However, there’s a little bit more to his 00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:11.279 story that is worth looking into. When we first meet Sly, he is being influenced by 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:15.269 the infection. He has one line here that is pretty interesting: 00:10:15.269 --> 00:10:18.550 “...Esmy... how much deeper do we have to go…” 00:10:18.550 --> 00:10:23.500 We have no idea who Esmy is, but I think I have an idea about where she might have gone. 00:10:23.500 --> 00:10:27.340 When Sly is presented with the Shopkeeper’s Key, he correctly guesses that we found it 00:10:27.340 --> 00:10:32.100 in the Crystal Peaks. He claims he has no idea how they key ended up there, but that 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:36.639 doesn’t make sense. Did Esmy lead Sly into the Crystal Peaks, resulting in some sort 00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:41.660 of event that caused Sly to lose both his key and Esmy? Or did Team Cherry just put 00:10:41.660 --> 00:10:47.300 it there because, well, it has to go somewhere? I don’t know, but I do hope Team Cherry 00:10:47.300 --> 00:10:49.220 gives us a little more info on this story 00:10:49.220 --> 00:10:53.660 I’ll briefly mention here that a lot of people have speculated that Sly is actually 00:10:53.660 --> 00:10:59.010 Mighty Hegemol, one of the Five Great Knights. This is mainly because of his small size and 00:10:59.010 --> 00:11:03.310 his proximity to the location of Hegemol’s armor. I know I said before that Hollow Knight’s 00:11:03.310 --> 00:11:08.649 lore is vague enough for any interpretation to be viable. Well, that’s not true. There’s 00:11:08.649 --> 00:11:13.970 no way Sly’s actually Hegemol, and there’s no way that you could convince me otherwise. 00:11:13.970 --> 00:11:18.471 Okay, so how are these four characters going to be used in the upcoming content pack? Are 00:11:18.471 --> 00:11:23.920 they just boss fights, or is there any more coming in the future? Well, at the very least, 00:11:23.920 --> 00:11:27.850 we’ll be able to Dream Nail them for just a little bit more lore, but I don’t think 00:11:27.850 --> 00:11:32.521 Team Cherry can fit all of the lore for Esmy in just a few Dream Nail dialogues. Another 00:11:32.521 --> 00:11:37.000 thing that Team Cherry can do is add more information about these bosses using the Hunter’s 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.410 Journal. The journal entries are an easy way to add lore into the game. I mean they even 00:11:41.410 --> 00:11:45.930 have a Hunter’s Journal entry for the Seal of Binding. Now how does that make sense? 00:11:45.930 --> 00:11:48.320 I mean, you wouldn’t “hunt” a seal. 00:11:49.140 --> 00:11:50.380 Okay, bad example. 00:11:51.020 --> 00:11:55.000 But considering the Hunter has entries for the Grimm Troupe characters and the Grey Prince 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.740 Zote enemies, using lines from texts he definitely wouldn’t have access to, it seems like his 00:11:59.740 --> 00:12:03.510 Journal is becoming less and less grounded in the reality of Hollow Knight. But then again, what the fuck is normal in 00:13:11.290 --> 00:13:12.490 this game? 00:13:12.490 --> 00:13:15.690 Another thing that Team Cherry might expand on in this update is the lore surrounding 00:13:15.690 --> 00:13:20.300 the Snail Shamans. During the Reddit AMA, someone asked Team Cherry if the Snail Shamans 00:13:20.300 --> 00:13:25.230 would be explained any further, to which William replied “Yes?” We don’t know much about 00:13:25.230 --> 00:13:29.450 the Snail Shamans. There’s only one that’s still alive in the game, and he tells us that 00:13:29.450 --> 00:13:34.040 he is somehow bound to the ancestral mound. What is interesting about the snail shamans 00:13:34.040 --> 00:13:37.570 is that they appear to be made of Void. The main reason I believe this is because the 00:13:37.570 --> 00:13:43.380 shamans in the Crystalized Mound and the Soul Sanctum explode into black orbs, which isn’t 00:13:43.380 --> 00:13:48.339 really a think regular bugs would do. Other than the Knight and the bugs in the Soul Sanctum, 00:13:48.339 --> 00:13:52.279 the Shamans are the only creatures still around who know how to use soul, indicating that 00:13:52.279 --> 00:13:55.269 their history in Hallownest goes back a long time. 00:13:55.269 --> 00:13:58.410 Now there’s lots of other little chunks of lore Team Cherry could throw into this 00:13:58.410 --> 00:14:04.440 content pack. Lifeblood, the grubs, the Colosseum of Fools, whoever the fuck Tuk is looking 00:14:04.440 --> 00:14:05.440 for. 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:08.959 But of course there’s one very important piece of lore that we simply cannot ignore. 00:14:08.959 --> 00:14:15.010 Bretta. As I’m sure you all remember, Bretta left Dirtmouth in Content Pack 2 to go and 00:14:15.010 --> 00:14:20.029 find her true love, since neither the Knight nor Zote were good enough for her. Personally, 00:14:20.029 --> 00:14:24.930 I think the Hunter is a perfect match for Bretta. Please, consider the following. Bretta 00:14:24.930 --> 00:14:29.070 left Zote because he claimed to be a great warrior but really wasn’t. The Hunter is 00:14:29.070 --> 00:14:33.449 basically everything that Zote isn’t, so Bretta would probably like him. Both the Hunter 00:14:33.449 --> 00:14:37.889 and Bretta are writers. The Hunter has his descriptive journals while Bretta has her 00:14:37.889 --> 00:14:42.660 sensual fanfiction. That’s clearly something they could bond over. The Hunter’s arc really just sorta stops.
