9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am holding something remarkably old. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is older than any human artifact, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 older than life on earth, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 older than the continents [br]and the oceans between them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This was formed over 4 billion years ago[br]in the earliest days of the solar system 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 while the planets were still forming. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This rusty lump of nickel and iron[br]may not appear special. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But when it is cut open, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can see that is differently[br]from earth lymetals. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This pattern reveals metallic crystals[br]that can only form out in space 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where molten metal can cool[br]extremely slowly, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a few degrees every million years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This was once part of a [br]much larger object, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 one of millions left over[br]after the planets formed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We call these objects asteroids. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Asteroids are our oldest[br]and most numerous cosmic neighbors. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This graphic shows near-earth asteroids[br]orbiting around the sun, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 shown in yellow, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and swinging close to the earth's orbit,[br]shown in blue. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The sizes of the earth, sun and asteroids[br]have been greatly exagerrate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so you can see them clearly. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Teams of scientists across the globe[br]are searching for these objects, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 discovering new ones everyday, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 steadily mapping near-earth space. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Much of this work is funded by NASA. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think of the search for these asteroids[br]as a giant public works project. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But instead of building a highway,[br]we're charting outer space, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 building an archive that will last[br]for generations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are the 1,556 near-earth asteroids[br]discovered just last year. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And these are all of the known[br]near-earth asteroids, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which at last count was 13,733. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Each one has been imaged, catalogued,[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and had its path around [br]the sun determined. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Although it varies from asteroid[br]to asteroid, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the paths of most asteroids[br]can be predicted 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for dozens of years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the paths of some asteroids[br]can be predicted with incredible precision. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For example, scientists at the [br]jet Propulsion Laboratory[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 predicted where the asteroid Toutatis[br]was going to be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 four years in advance within[br]30 kilometers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In those four years, Toutatis[br]travelled 8.5 billion kilomters. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's a fractional precision [br]of 0.000000004.[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now the reason I have this [br]beautiful asteroid fragment 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is because, like all neighbors,[br]asteroids sometimes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 drop by unexpectedly. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Three years ago today, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a small asteroid exploded[br]over the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That object was about 19 meters across, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or about as big as a convenient store. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Objects of this size hit the earth[br]every 50 years or so. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 66 million years ago, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a much larger object hit the earth,[br]causing a massive extinction. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 75 percent of plant and animal species[br]were lost, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 including, sadly, the dinosaurs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That object was about [br]10 kilometers across, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and 10 kilometers is roughly[br]the cruising altitude 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of a 747 jet. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the next time you're in an[br]airplane, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 snag a window seat, look out 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and imagine a rock so enormous that[br]resting on the ground, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it just grazes your wingtip. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's so wide, that it takes your[br]plane 6 full minutes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to fly past it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's the size of the asteroid[br]that hit the earth. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It has only been within my lifetime[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that asteroids have been considered[br]a credible threat to the planet. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And since then, there's been [br]a focused effort underway 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to discover and catalogue [br]these objects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am lucky enough to be part[br]of this effort. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm part of a team of scientists[br]that use NASA's
