0:00:11.733,0:00:12.823 Hello. 0:00:12.823,0:00:17.063 So, today, I'm going to be talking[br]about what psychopathy is, the term, 0:00:17.063,0:00:20.313 and what we're doing about it[br]here at Juniata College. 0:00:21.713,0:00:26.094 So, I'll begin by saying[br]in the fall of 2016, 0:00:26.094,0:00:29.882 our lab in the Psychology Department,[br]under Professor Rebecca Weldon, 0:00:29.882,0:00:34.832 was attempting to ascertain some[br]of these features underlying psychopathy 0:00:34.832,0:00:37.073 and how they relate[br]to student populations. 0:00:37.472,0:00:41.702 We found, consistent with the hypothesis[br]called the distress-specific hypothesis, 0:00:41.702,0:00:43.612 which I'll talk about in a little bit, 0:00:43.612,0:00:46.622 that participants who were[br]higher in psychopathy, 0:00:46.622,0:00:49.148 which is this empathic deficit, 0:00:49.522,0:00:53.261 were slower in recognizing[br]the fearful faces of other people, 0:00:53.261,0:00:55.601 and I'm going to discuss[br]the implications of this. 0:00:55.601,0:00:58.801 Now, in the fall of this school year, 0:00:58.801,0:01:02.216 we wanted to try something else,[br]we wanted to question the impossible. 0:01:02.552,0:01:05.452 The fact is that there very few[br]treatments for psychopathy, 0:01:05.452,0:01:08.551 and we wanted to see[br]if we could alter this effect, 0:01:08.551,0:01:11.928 this delay in recognizing[br]the fearful faces of other people, 0:01:12.282,0:01:16.144 by priming empathy,[br]or something like empathy, 0:01:16.144,0:01:18.668 in those people who were[br]higher in psychopathy. 0:01:22.512,0:01:25.391 I think in order to understand[br]what I mean by "psychopathy," 0:01:25.391,0:01:29.164 we should discuss how the term[br]has been sensationalized in the media. 0:01:29.502,0:01:31.642 So, in pop culture in Hollywood, 0:01:31.642,0:01:34.993 there is this thing that has been coined[br]the "elite psychopath." 0:01:34.993,0:01:36.973 So, I'll tell a bit about what that is, 0:01:36.973,0:01:39.244 but first, I think I should give[br]some examples. 0:01:39.244,0:01:43.572 Such characters as Hannibal Lecter,[br]Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, 0:01:43.572,0:01:47.112 or the most recent television[br]adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, 0:01:47.112,0:01:51.203 all of these could qualify[br]as this elite psychopath caricature, 0:01:51.203,0:01:53.534 and it's problematic in a number of ways. 0:01:54.383,0:01:57.642 These characters are[br]antiheroes at the core. 0:01:57.642,0:02:02.944 So you are invited to empathize[br]with these protagonistic characters 0:02:02.944,0:02:06.614 who never really do show[br]empathy to other people. 0:02:06.614,0:02:09.744 And so, of course, we want[br]to emulate these characters. 0:02:09.744,0:02:10.953 But as a matter of fact, 0:02:10.953,0:02:13.306 they do show some[br]of the qualities of psychopathy. 0:02:13.996,0:02:19.172 They are cold, calculating, apathetic,[br]they're sophisticated, 0:02:19.172,0:02:22.264 but they're also some things[br]that we don't really see as often 0:02:22.264,0:02:23.855 in actual psychopathy. 0:02:23.855,0:02:26.234 They're one step ahead[br]of the competition, always, 0:02:26.234,0:02:28.772 they are Machiavellian masterminds, 0:02:28.772,0:02:30.982 and that's not something we really see. 0:02:32.441,0:02:35.932 So I'm going to talk about how[br]psychopathy has been characterized 0:02:35.932,0:02:38.043 in the field of psychology, 0:02:38.043,0:02:43.052 and those components will be differences[br]in action and differences in the brain. 0:02:44.432,0:02:48.133 Also, I think it's important[br]to note that in the DSM-5, 0:02:48.133,0:02:51.733 which is a terminology manual[br]for Psychology, 0:02:51.733,0:02:56.572 antisocial personality disorder has been[br]considered synonymous with psychopathy. 0:02:56.572,0:02:58.541 While it shares some common symptomology, 0:02:58.541,0:03:00.352 we will be considering psychopathy 0:03:00.352,0:03:03.583 in accordance with a different set[br]of features and facets 0:03:03.583,0:03:07.502 that set it apart ever so slightly[br]with antisocial personality disorder. 0:03:07.502,0:03:10.743 But I should start by saying[br]in antisocial personality disorder, 0:03:10.743,0:03:13.432 we see symptoms like aggression,[br]outward aggression, 0:03:13.432,0:03:14.613 that can be generalized, 0:03:14.613,0:03:17.403 this impulsiveness,[br]sensation-seeking behavior, 0:03:17.403,0:03:20.438 recklessness and association[br]with criminal behavior. 0:03:22.789,0:03:24.611 So let's talk about some of these. 0:03:24.611,0:03:26.512 There's a lack of guilt or remorse. 0:03:26.512,0:03:28.545 There's a lack of emotional expression. 0:03:28.545,0:03:32.964 These symptoms are affective[br]or emotional processing differences. 0:03:32.964,0:03:35.213 Our study focused mainly on these. 0:03:35.213,0:03:38.254 So people who are high in psychopathy[br]will tend to be callous, 0:03:38.254,0:03:40.475 a bit like the pop culture representation. 0:03:40.475,0:03:42.548 They will lack emotional expression, 0:03:42.548,0:03:45.623 so they won't be expressing[br]emotions to other people. 0:03:45.623,0:03:48.093 There's also a lack[br]of prosocial emotional response, 0:03:48.093,0:03:53.134 which means in day to day interaction,[br]when someone is showing distress, 0:03:53.134,0:03:55.574 you are expected[br]to behave in a certain way; 0:03:55.574,0:03:56.953 they don't do this. 0:03:58.143,0:04:01.834 There are also differences[br]that are interpersonal in nature. 0:04:01.834,0:04:04.944 They manipulate other people,[br]they use them as a means to an end. 0:04:04.944,0:04:07.192 And there is grandiosity as well, 0:04:07.192,0:04:09.442 or an exaggerated sense[br]of self-importance. 0:04:09.442,0:04:13.402 This is also seen in psychopathy,[br]in people who are high in psychopathy. 0:04:14.676,0:04:19.634 There's a last piece, and that piece is[br]sensation seeking and impulsivity. 0:04:19.634,0:04:23.475 This is not so much seen[br]in the elite psychopath caricature. 0:04:23.475,0:04:28.124 People who are high in psychopathy[br]will act impulsively, 0:04:28.924,0:04:33.433 they will seek sensation and they will not[br]duly consider risk versus reward. 0:04:33.433,0:04:35.965 And so, often, they will[br]commit criminal acts 0:04:35.965,0:04:38.463 and subsequently be incarcerated. 0:04:40.724,0:04:42.455 When they seek sensation, 0:04:43.225,0:04:45.455 they have to calculate[br]this risk versus reward, 0:04:45.455,0:04:49.185 they have to actively weigh the risk[br]versus reward in order to make the action, 0:04:49.185,0:04:52.761 but we don't really see this[br]in people who are high in psychopathy. 0:04:53.244,0:04:55.365 And of course there is[br]that aggression piece, 0:04:55.365,0:04:57.116 this generalized aggression. 0:04:57.116,0:05:00.214 So, people who are high in psychopathy[br]have difficulty determining 0:05:00.214,0:05:02.555 victims versus victimless crimes. 0:05:02.555,0:05:04.373 And so, when they commit these crimes, 0:05:04.373,0:05:09.463 they do not duly consider the potential[br]impact this might have on another person. 0:05:10.513,0:05:13.915 So let's talk about some of the brain[br]differences we see in psychopathy. 0:05:13.915,0:05:15.734 Mainly, we'll talk about the amygdala, 0:05:15.734,0:05:18.936 which is an area of the brain[br]near the center of the brain, 0:05:18.936,0:05:24.352 and there's less activation in people[br]higher in psychopathy, in this region, 0:05:24.352,0:05:27.024 when they are looking[br]at the emotions of other people, 0:05:27.024,0:05:30.006 specifically distress emotions. 0:05:30.234,0:05:31.363 And that's important 0:05:31.363,0:05:35.493 because when you're not processing[br]the distress of other people, 0:05:35.493,0:05:38.693 perhaps you're not also feeling[br]the guilt and remorse 0:05:38.693,0:05:41.284 that a normal person[br]would typically experience 0:05:41.284,0:05:44.994 when they can tell those people[br]are experiencing those emotions. 0:05:47.264,0:05:51.264 So, when there's less activation in people[br]who are high in psychopathy, 0:05:51.264,0:05:54.664 this area of the brain, the amygdala,[br]involved in emotional processing, 0:05:54.664,0:05:57.004 again shows less activation. 0:05:57.325,0:05:59.814 So, what's the importance[br]of studying psychopathy? 0:05:59.814,0:06:03.044 Well, there is this linkage[br]between psychopathy and crime. 0:06:03.304,0:06:05.415 If you look at the literature[br]on psychopathy, 0:06:05.415,0:06:07.904 you will find that most[br]participants are inmates. 0:06:07.904,0:06:09.945 This is not a coincidence. 0:06:10.305,0:06:12.744 It is far more prevalent[br]in prison populations. 0:06:12.744,0:06:17.145 It's been estimated anywhere[br]from 50% to 80% of inmates could qualify 0:06:17.145,0:06:20.515 for some symptomology in psychopathy[br]that is above the norm. 0:06:20.896,0:06:22.565 Outside of prison populations, 0:06:22.565,0:06:26.195 a much less percentage could be[br]considered high in psychopathy. 0:06:26.195,0:06:31.132 It has been estimated anywhere from 1.3%[br]to 6.85% of men in the general population, 0:06:31.132,0:06:32.474 mainly in the United States, 0:06:32.474,0:06:36.065 could qualify as having some symptomology[br]associated with psychopathy, 0:06:36.065,0:06:38.524 whereas in women, it is 0.8%. 0:06:38.524,0:06:40.083 So considerably less 0:06:40.091,0:06:43.300 could be considered to qualify[br]for the symptoms of psychopathy. 0:06:43.826,0:06:47.746 It is also important to study psychopathy[br]because at this time, 0:06:47.746,0:06:51.114 treatments for psychopathy[br]have been largely unsuccessful. 0:06:51.114,0:06:54.595 This is because treatments[br]like cognitive and behavioral strategies 0:06:54.595,0:06:57.746 require some kind of agency[br]or willingness to change, 0:06:57.746,0:07:00.589 in participants, or patients. 0:07:01.117,0:07:03.666 People who are high[br]in psychopathy, unsurprisingly, 0:07:03.666,0:07:06.055 seem to lack this agency[br]and willingness to change, 0:07:06.055,0:07:08.582 and so the treatments[br]are largely unsuccessful. 0:07:09.357,0:07:10.646 So what is being done? 0:07:10.646,0:07:13.954 Well, currently, our lab,[br]here at Juniata College, 0:07:14.524,0:07:17.485 is working on this[br]distress-specific hypothesis, 0:07:17.485,0:07:19.294 which is that the affective symptoms, 0:07:19.294,0:07:23.534 the emotional processing[br]symptoms of psychopathy, 0:07:24.964,0:07:28.013 could be responsible for this deficit 0:07:28.013,0:07:31.845 in processing the distress[br]emotions in other people. 0:07:31.845,0:07:37.306 So we thought, "What if we could[br]prime them for a congruent emotion, 0:07:37.306,0:07:40.457 and maybe that could,[br]maybe, alter this effect, 0:07:40.457,0:07:43.187 this delay in processing[br]the emotions of other people?" 0:07:43.187,0:07:46.757 So we used something called the[br]autobiographical emotional memory task, 0:07:46.757,0:07:51.126 which challenges a participant[br]to recall a time in their life 0:07:51.126,0:07:53.006 where they felt a specific emotion. 0:07:53.006,0:07:54.145 We used fear. 0:07:54.145,0:07:57.885 So our participants recalled a time[br]in their life where they experienced fear, 0:07:58.416,0:07:59.915 and because of this, 0:07:59.915,0:08:02.945 it may be that fear becomes[br]more salient, it's more accessible, 0:08:02.945,0:08:05.291 it's more easy to recognize[br]in other people. 0:08:05.291,0:08:08.545 So if we could take participants,[br]people who are high in psychopathy, 0:08:08.545,0:08:10.406 and prime them for this fear, 0:08:10.406,0:08:14.948 they may subsequently be better able[br]to recognize that fear in other people. 0:08:14.948,0:08:16.855 And if our findings support this, 0:08:16.855,0:08:19.967 it may be that priming[br]for a congruent emotion 0:08:19.967,0:08:24.105 could be a way, through exposure,[br]to condition an empathic response 0:08:24.105,0:08:27.506 in people who would otherwise[br]lack such a response. 0:08:27.506,0:08:30.585 In other words, we could foster[br]empathy in psychopaths. 0:08:30.585,0:08:32.134 And this would be groundbreaking 0:08:32.134,0:08:36.256 because incarceration in our country[br]is at an all-time high, 0:08:36.256,0:08:39.605 and if we could somehow minimize this 0:08:39.605,0:08:44.607 through developing strategies to address[br]people who have psychopathic symptoms, 0:08:44.607,0:08:48.135 before criminal behaviors[br]can begin to manifest, 0:08:48.135,0:08:51.316 we might be able to deal 0:08:51.316,0:08:54.364 with the current dilemma[br]that is psychopathy in our country. 0:08:54.764,0:08:55.936 Thank you. 0:08:55.936,0:08:57.496 (Applause)
