0:00:01.849,0:00:06.430 Gaw, you feel wonky today. What the hell happened?![br]Oh my life! Oh, I don't know if I'm gonna 0:00:06.430,0:00:14.139 survive this video. Hey! So, today, I want[br]to address a little thing that is kind of, 0:00:14.139,0:00:19.700 er, annoying. But it's also a little bit confusing.[br]And it's annoying because it's confusing, 0:00:19.700,0:00:23.780 and it's confusing because it's annoying,[br]and it's just....it's a vicious cycle really. 0:00:23.780,0:00:29.300 Today I want to try and answer the question[br]what is a polyglot? A polyglot is something 0:00:29.300,0:00:33.809 that I..It's a word I'd never really heard[br]of to be honest until recently in the past...5 0:00:33.809,0:00:41.780 years let's say. And so the fact that I hadn't[br]heard of this word means that a lot of other 0:00:41.780,0:00:46.940 people also hadn't heard of this word and[br]also still haven't heard of this word. But 0:00:46.940,0:00:51.989 this word, 'polyglot', is now being used more[br]and more and more within the sort of online 0:00:51.989,0:01:00.159 language learning community and I feel like[br]for some people, it kind of is, erm, scary, 0:01:00.159,0:01:05.400 because the think "Oh my goodness! I'm not,[br]I don't speak seventeen languages. Maybe I 0:01:05.400,0:01:10.710 do speak seventeen languages and I don't speak[br]them to C2 level that means I'm not a polyglot, 0:01:10.710,0:01:11.740 that means I can't go to these events that[br]have the word 'polyglot' in the title. Oh, 0:01:11.740,0:01:19.990 what a disaster!". But I just want to say[br]to those people that it's totally ok. See 0:01:19.990,0:01:27.109 the thing is about the word polyglot - there[br]is no strict definition. Like, if I, if I...where's 0:01:27.109,0:01:32.359 my phone? Let's do this right now. Ok, let's[br]see, what is a polyglot? Let's check and see 0:01:32.359,0:01:39.850 what the old er, search engine extraordinaire[br]that begins with a 'G' says. "Are you trilingual? 0:01:39.850,0:01:44.520 Are you monolingual, bilingual, trilingual,[br]multilingual or a polyglot?" See, there you 0:01:44.520,0:01:49.729 go multilingual and polyglot are being used[br]separately even though technically 'poly' 0:01:49.729,0:01:54.850 means multiple, like many, like a polyglot,[br]polyglot, a poly- , polygon! That's a shape 0:01:54.850,0:02:03.520 with many sides, right? And then 'glot' is[br]language. Kind of like in the term, one of 0:02:03.520,0:02:12.780 my favourites, 'glottal stop'. But-ter! So,[br]it just means multiple languages. Ok. So it's 0:02:12.780,0:02:23.470 not 4, 5, 6, 7, 17, 52, 103. It's not to A1,[br]to A2, to B1, to C2, blah blah, to C2. There 0:02:23.470,0:02:31.930 is no clear definition of what it takes to[br]call yourself a polyglot. Now I actually filmed 0:02:31.930,0:02:38.310 a video, erm, a few months back before I went[br]to the Polyglot Gathering this year in May 0:02:38.310,0:02:43.010 in Berlin. And I filmed this video and I never[br]actually edited it. In this video, basically, 0:02:43.010,0:02:48.040 I was of the opinion that, you know, there[br]is no clear definition, let's all calm down, 0:02:48.040,0:02:52.510 let's not worry about specifically what a[br]polyglot is. I actually kind of ended it by 0:02:52.510,0:02:58.710 saying that at the same time, I feel like[br]it's saying "Yes! I am a, er, I'm the best 0:02:58.710,0:03:04.610 footballer you'll ever find". It's something,[br]there was some kind of arrogance there I felt 0:03:04.610,0:03:08.730 so I would never have called myself a polyglot.[br]And then I went to the Polyglot Gathering 0:03:08.730,0:03:13.090 in Berlin. I know it's ironic the name 'polyglot'[br]and I said I wasn't blah, blah, blah! But 0:03:13.090,0:03:18.040 I went there and I went to one talk with Richard[br]Simcott, who I'm sure you've heard of if you're 0:03:18.040,0:03:23.680 watching this video, and he outlined that[br]for him, the definition is changing and a 0:03:23.680,0:03:29.310 polyglot is someone, for him, who actively[br]goes forward and learns languages for no particular 0:03:29.310,0:03:35.010 reason, just for the pure love of language[br]and the love of learning language and the 0:03:35.010,0:03:39.330 love of communicating with people via different[br]languages. And I thought this was so beautiful. 0:03:39.330,0:03:46.800 It's so open, it's so accepting. There is[br]no definition, there is no specific number, 0:03:46.800,0:03:51.660 specific requirement that you have to, erm,[br]achieve, that you have to attain before you 0:03:51.660,0:03:55.820 can say, yeah I'm a polyglot. And before you[br]can say, yeah, I'm going to go to the Polyglot 0:03:55.820,0:04:01.200 Gathering or the Polyglot Conference. No![br]If you love language and I'm telling you this, 0:04:01.200,0:04:06.160 like, from the heart 'cause the battery's[br]about to die! If you love language and you 0:04:06.160,0:04:14.120 actively learn languages and you enjoy that[br]process, and you have no limit to what you 0:04:14.120,0:04:18.940 want to do and how many languages you want[br]to learn, then you are a polyglot. And I think 0:04:18.940,0:04:25.440 that that is now becoming the widely accepted[br]definition. And it's something that I myself 0:04:25.440,0:04:33.880 would, err, would like to believe. I would[br]love, I want, for me, this is the new definition 0:04:33.880,0:04:40.490 of what a polyglot is. I hope that cleared[br]something up. What do you think? Do you agree 0:04:40.490,0:04:46.560 with this definition? I've very much taken[br]this definition that I use myself from Richard 0:04:46.560,0:04:52.220 Simcott so thank you to Richard for, err,[br]for sharing his opinion on this in Berlin. 0:04:52.220,0:04:58.020 It really helped me personally to kind of[br]get a bigger, much broader perspective of 0:04:58.020,0:05:01.590 this word, and that's what I want to share[br]with you today. But do you agree? Is this 0:05:01.590,0:05:06.720 your opinion? Let me know in the comments[br]below. I'd love to get chatting with you about 0:05:06.720,0:05:08.710 this and to know if you think "no, it should[br]be this set number of languages or it should 0:05:08.710,0:05:13.380 be a set level" or, whatever you think, please[br]just share in the comments, I'd love to hear 0:05:13.380,0:05:17.860 some opinions on this. And as usual, if you[br]enjoyed, please subscribe. I hope you enjoyed 0:05:17.860,0:05:22.350 this video, I hope you found it useful and[br]I hope that it will inspire you to use the 0:05:22.350,0:05:28.720 word polyglot more confidently, more comfortably,[br]and to perhaps even attend a polyglot event. 0:05:28.720,0:05:33.310 This isn't like a sponsored video of any of[br]those events! I've been to two events myself, 0:05:33.310,0:05:40.270 one Polyglot Gathering and one Polyglot Conference[br]in the past year, and I loved them both. The 0:05:40.270,0:05:44.250 atmosphere is incredible, there's no competition,[br]there's no, err, like peacocking, if you like, 0:05:44.250,0:05:51.190 of you know, "Well, actually my badge says[br]err, I speak 52 languages, so, you know, come 0:05:51.190,0:05:56.100 at me!" There's none of that. It's just really[br]friendly, really warm, really open, and just 0:05:56.100,0:06:01.830 to share some time with people who share that[br]same passion for language learning as you 0:06:01.830,0:06:07.990 do is a real gem and it's something that I[br]think if you're watching this video, you should 0:06:07.990,0:06:10.720 probably take advantage of. Ok, thank you.
