WEBVTT 00:00:03.210 --> 00:00:07.069 Hi, welcome to Make, Thrift, Buy, the show where you send me interesting, weird, cool, 00:00:07.069 --> 00:00:11.200 expensive, mass-produced clothes from the internet, and I try my best to recreate them 00:00:11.200 --> 00:00:14.650 through a combination of thrifting or crafting or sometimes both! 00:00:14.650 --> 00:00:18.170 Today's challenge was sent in by TheMusicivy who wanted me to try out this winking eye 00:00:18.170 --> 00:00:23.710 shirt. Now I originally think that the shirt was by Asos, it's been sold out for a long 00:00:23.710 --> 00:00:28.070 time, and there are copies on a bunch of wholesale sites all over the internet. So I think that 00:00:28.070 --> 00:00:31.520 this is a pretty perfect one to try and recreate. So, let's get started. 00:00:31.520 --> 00:00:34.870 The first thing that I did was to go and find a collared shirt at 00:00:34.870 --> 00:00:35.530 the thrift shop! 00:00:35.530 --> 00:00:38.739 I wanted to find a plain-coloured shirt with a nice big collar. 00:00:38.739 --> 00:00:41.440 I did find a white shirt, but the collar wasn’t big enough 00:00:41.440 --> 00:00:43.559 So I chose this light-pink shirt instead. 00:00:43.559 --> 00:00:48.609 I set up my reference picture, then, using a pencil, started drawing a closed eye onto 00:00:48.609 --> 00:00:50.399 one side of the collar. 00:00:50.399 --> 00:00:53.390 On the other side of the collar, I drew an open eye. 00:00:53.390 --> 00:00:57.949 And the good thing about using pencil for this step is that you can rub out any errors, 00:00:57.949 --> 00:01:00.969 and start again, until you’re happy with the design. 00:01:00.969 --> 00:01:06.290 Then, I also got some embroidery thread in a contrasting colour to the shirt. 00:01:06.290 --> 00:01:09.870 Embroidery thread is thicker than normal thread, and normally comes as 6 threads all woven 00:01:09.870 --> 00:01:11.480 together like this. The more threads you use, the thicker your 00:01:11.490 --> 00:01:13.700 embroidery will be. I am going to use three threads, so I divide 00:01:13.700 --> 00:01:17.280 this into three threads each and pull the threads apart. 00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:24.659 Then, with one of these three-thread pieces, I thread it through an embroidery needle, 00:01:24.659 --> 00:01:30.540 and tie a knot in the other end. 00:01:30.540 --> 00:01:33.820 Then, I start embroidering! 00:01:33.820 --> 00:01:38.119 So for the closed eye, I am going to use what is called a “back-stitch”. 00:01:38.119 --> 00:01:42.259 This is where you bring your needle up about a rice-grain’s length away from the previous 00:01:42.259 --> 00:01:48.399 stitch, and then insert your needle at the end of the previous stitch. 00:01:48.399 --> 00:01:51.700 When you pull the thread through, also make sure that you don’t pull on it too hard 00:01:51.700 --> 00:01:55.399 – because you don’t want to bunch the fabric up in-between the stitches! 00:01:55.399 --> 00:01:58.759 Then I continued back-stitching all the way along the eyelid, 00:01:58.759 --> 00:02:04.619 And did the same stitch on all of the eyelashes. Which gave me this. 00:02:04.619 --> 00:02:09.740 For the eyeball, I did all the outlines also using a back-stitch technique. 00:02:09.740 --> 00:02:19.360 So I went all the way around the eye, and the iris of the eye, like this. 00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:24.050 To fill in the iris of the eye, I used a different embroidery technique. This one is called 00:02:24.050 --> 00:02:28.710 a satin stitch. So with a satin stitch, you start at the edge, and bring your needle up 00:02:28.710 --> 00:02:37.190 at the top of the shape, bring it down at the bottom of the shape, and bring it up again 00:02:37.190 --> 00:02:39.910 at the top. 00:02:39.910 --> 00:02:43.890 So your shape is slowly filled in using these long, straight stitches. 00:02:43.890 --> 00:02:48.020 I continued this all the way along the shape, until it’s entirely filled in. 00:02:48.020 --> 00:02:52.310 And it’s super important that you don’t pull your threads too tightly when you are 00:02:52.310 --> 00:02:56.640 doing a satin stitch here, because otherwise you’ll bunch your collar fabric up. 00:02:56.640 --> 00:03:00.810 Then I used a backstitch to finish off the eyelashes, and, I’m done! 00:03:00.810 --> 00:03:04.630 So now the question is – How did I go? How does my version compare to the original? 00:03:06.280 --> 00:03:11.540 [Electronic dance music plays] 00:03:17.340 --> 00:03:18.260 [Electronic dance music stops] 00:03:18.260 --> 00:03:22.220 *Sigh* I'm trying to wink, you guys, I'm trying to wink. You know, to like, match my collar. 00:03:22.220 --> 00:03:23.260 Okay. 00:03:23.260 --> 00:03:27.440 [Electronic dance music resumes] 00:03:27.440 --> 00:03:28.480 No! 00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:34.660 [Electronic dance music stops] 00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:41.880 See that? That's a good wink, right there. Yep. You should do this whenever you're wearing this shirt. 00:03:41.880 --> 00:03:46.400 So, I think that this one worked pretty well. So my conclusion is: 00:03:46.400 --> 00:03:48.240 [zipper, scissors snipping sound effect] 00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:52.500 Yeah, definitely thrift a shirt and make this for yourself. What I particularly like about 00:03:52.500 --> 00:03:57.120 this is that you're not restricted to the one jumper like you are in original item, 00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:00.720 where the pink jumper appears to be attached to the shirt - at least in some iterations 00:04:00.720 --> 00:04:02.100 that I've found. 00:04:02.120 --> 00:04:07.060 With this one, you're free to change it up however you want! Wear it with sweaters, underneath 00:04:07.060 --> 00:04:10.230 cute dresses, and it even looks pretty cute just by itself. 00:04:10.230 --> 00:04:14.370 So that's it from me, I hope that you're all having a really good day - give me a thumbs 00:04:14.370 --> 00:04:18.970 up if you liked this video and don't forget to leave suggestions for clothes that you 00:04:18.970 --> 00:04:20.789 want me to try and recreate in the comments section below. 00:04:20.789 --> 00:04:23.580 And I hope you're all having a really good day! Bye!
