0:00:03.210,0:00:07.069 Hi, welcome to Make, Thrift, Buy, the show[br]where you send me interesting, weird, cool, 0:00:07.069,0:00:11.200 expensive, mass-produced clothes from the[br]internet, and I try my best to recreate them 0:00:11.200,0:00:14.650 through a combination of thrifting or crafting[br]or sometimes both! 0:00:14.650,0:00:18.170 Today's challenge was sent in by TheMusicivy[br]who wanted me to try out this winking eye 0:00:18.170,0:00:23.710 shirt. Now I originally think that the shirt[br]was by Asos, it's been sold out for a long 0:00:23.710,0:00:28.070 time, and there are copies on a bunch of wholesale[br]sites all over the internet. So I think that 0:00:28.070,0:00:31.520 this is a pretty perfect one to try and recreate.[br]So, let's get started. 0:00:31.520,0:00:34.870 The first thing that I did was to go and find[br]a collared shirt at 0:00:34.870,0:00:35.530 the thrift shop! 0:00:35.530,0:00:38.739 I wanted to find a plain-coloured shirt with[br]a nice big collar. 0:00:38.739,0:00:41.440 I did find a white shirt, but the collar wasn’t[br]big enough 0:00:41.440,0:00:43.559 So I chose this light-pink shirt instead. 0:00:43.559,0:00:48.609 I set up my reference picture, then, using[br]a pencil, started drawing a closed eye onto 0:00:48.609,0:00:50.399 one side of the collar. 0:00:50.399,0:00:53.390 On the other side of the collar, I drew an[br]open eye. 0:00:53.390,0:00:57.949 And the good thing about using pencil for[br]this step is that you can rub out any errors, 0:00:57.949,0:01:00.969 and start again, until you’re happy with[br]the design. 0:01:00.969,0:01:06.290 Then, I also got some embroidery thread in[br]a contrasting colour to the shirt. 0:01:06.290,0:01:09.870 Embroidery thread is thicker than normal thread,[br]and normally comes as 6 threads all woven 0:01:09.870,0:01:11.480 together like this.[br]The more threads you use, the thicker your 0:01:11.490,0:01:13.700 embroidery will be.[br]I am going to use three threads, so I divide 0:01:13.700,0:01:17.280 this into three threads each and pull the[br]threads apart. 0:01:17.280,0:01:24.659 Then, with one of these three-thread pieces,[br]I thread it through an embroidery needle, 0:01:24.659,0:01:30.540 and tie a knot in the other end. 0:01:30.540,0:01:33.820 Then, I start embroidering! 0:01:33.820,0:01:38.119 So for the closed eye, I am going to use what[br]is called a “back-stitch”. 0:01:38.119,0:01:42.259 This is where you bring your needle up about[br]a rice-grain’s length away from the previous 0:01:42.259,0:01:48.399 stitch, and then insert your needle at the[br]end of the previous stitch. 0:01:48.399,0:01:51.700 When you pull the thread through, also make[br]sure that you don’t pull on it too hard 0:01:51.700,0:01:55.399 – because you don’t want to bunch the[br]fabric up in-between the stitches! 0:01:55.399,0:01:58.759 Then I continued back-stitching all the way[br]along the eyelid, 0:01:58.759,0:02:04.619 And did the same stitch on all of the eyelashes.[br]Which gave me this. 0:02:04.619,0:02:09.740 For the eyeball, I did all the outlines also[br]using a back-stitch technique. 0:02:09.740,0:02:19.360 So I went all the way around the eye, and[br]the iris of the eye, like this. 0:02:19.360,0:02:24.050 To fill in the iris of the eye, I used a different[br]embroidery technique. This one is called 0:02:24.050,0:02:28.710 a satin stitch. So with a satin stitch, you[br]start at the edge, and bring your needle up 0:02:28.710,0:02:37.190 at the top of the shape, bring it down at[br]the bottom of the shape, and bring it up again 0:02:37.190,0:02:39.910 at the top. 0:02:39.910,0:02:43.890 So your shape is slowly filled in using these[br]long, straight stitches. 0:02:43.890,0:02:48.020 I continued this all the way along the shape,[br]until it’s entirely filled in. 0:02:48.020,0:02:52.310 And it’s super important that you don’t[br]pull your threads too tightly when you are 0:02:52.310,0:02:56.640 doing a satin stitch here, because otherwise[br]you’ll bunch your collar fabric up. 0:02:56.640,0:03:00.810 Then I used a backstitch to finish off the[br]eyelashes, and, I’m done! 0:03:00.810,0:03:04.630 So now the question is – How did I go? How[br]does my version compare to the original? 0:03:06.280,0:03:11.540 [Electronic dance music plays] 0:03:17.340,0:03:18.260 [Electronic dance music stops] 0:03:18.260,0:03:22.220 *Sigh* I'm trying to wink, you guys, I'm trying[br]to wink. You know, to like, match my collar. 0:03:22.220,0:03:23.260 Okay. 0:03:23.260,0:03:27.440 [Electronic dance music resumes] 0:03:27.440,0:03:28.480 No! 0:03:34.160,0:03:34.660 [Electronic dance music stops] 0:03:34.680,0:03:41.880 See that? That's a good wink, right there.[br]Yep. You should do this whenever you're wearing this shirt. 0:03:41.880,0:03:46.400 So, I think that this one worked pretty well.[br]So my conclusion is: 0:03:46.400,0:03:48.240 [zipper, scissors snipping sound effect] 0:03:48.240,0:03:52.500 Yeah, definitely thrift a shirt and make this[br]for yourself. What I particularly like about 0:03:52.500,0:03:57.120 this is that you're not restricted to the[br]one jumper like you are in original item, 0:03:57.120,0:04:00.720 where the pink jumper appears to be attached[br]to the shirt - at least in some iterations 0:04:00.720,0:04:02.100 that I've found. 0:04:02.120,0:04:07.060 With this one, you're free to change it up[br]however you want! Wear it with sweaters, underneath 0:04:07.060,0:04:10.230 cute dresses, and it even looks pretty cute[br]just by itself. 0:04:10.230,0:04:14.370 So that's it from me, I hope that you're all[br]having a really good day - give me a thumbs 0:04:14.370,0:04:18.970 up if you liked this video and don't forget[br]to leave suggestions for clothes that you 0:04:18.970,0:04:20.789 want me to try and recreate in the comments[br]section below. 0:04:20.789,0:04:23.580 And I hope you're all having a really good[br]day! Bye!
