WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.629 Hello. Today we're going to be discussing the different views available in 00:00:03.629 --> 00:00:08.069 "Computer," and how to change among the views, and how to sort in the different 00:00:08.069 --> 00:00:13.170 views. Now the view that we're in right now is the small icon view. This view is 00:00:13.170 --> 00:00:16.590 good if you have a lot of things in a given folder that you'd like to be able 00:00:16.590 --> 00:00:22.460 to see all at once and if you have very good eyesight and good hand-eye coordination. 00:00:22.460 --> 00:00:28.470 You might decide however you'd like to see things a little bit larger. If you 00:00:28.470 --> 00:00:33.000 right-click on a blank part of the pane, you can choose "View" 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:36.780 and instead of choosing "Small icons," I might choose medium or large or even 00:00:36.780 --> 00:00:43.680 extra large icons. In all of these views you see an icon representing the object 00:00:43.680 --> 00:00:49.469 as well as the object's name. Once I get into the large icon view, I can actually 00:00:49.469 --> 00:00:55.710 see a thumbnail of one of the pictures in here. There's another way you can 00:00:55.710 --> 00:01:00.300 change among views, but you need to be able to see your menu bar to do that. You 00:01:00.300 --> 00:01:04.199 might not see your menu bar, and if it's hidden you can display it by going to 00:01:04.199 --> 00:01:12.510 Organize-->Layout, and click on "Menu Bar." From here, you have a menu option and you 00:01:12.510 --> 00:01:18.540 have the same views available here that you had by right-clicking. You can go 00:01:18.540 --> 00:01:21.840 through each of the views yourself and see what's available. The one other view 00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:25.799 that I'd really like to point out, however, is the "Details" view. I really 00:01:25.799 --> 00:01:29.310 like this view because it gives you not just the information you had before in 00:01:29.310 --> 00:01:33.360 those small and the large icons views, but it gives you some additional 00:01:33.360 --> 00:01:38.610 information as well: When was the file last modified, what type of file it is, 00:01:38.610 --> 00:01:45.600 what's its size, and if you right-click on the field headings row, you could 00:01:45.600 --> 00:01:54.479 choose to add even additional fields to display. By default your files are 00:01:54.479 --> 00:01:58.590 probably going to be organized alphabetically a-z: first A through to Z 00:01:58.590 --> 00:02:06.119 in the folders, and A to Z in the file names. If you wish to change the order 00:02:06.119 --> 00:02:10.800 when you're in the "Details" view, it's really easy. Maybe I'd like to group all 00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:13.860 of my bitmap images together. I'd like to create a folder 00:02:13.860 --> 00:02:19.830 and put all my bitmap images in. Well, I can just click on the field heading for 00:02:19.830 --> 00:02:24.510 "Type" and if I click on it once, everything will be sorted in ascending 00:02:24.510 --> 00:02:31.410 order by type -- folders first then files. If I click on a type field heading again it 00:02:31.410 --> 00:02:36.810 reverses the sort order so it's sorting in descending order. I'm going to go back 00:02:36.810 --> 00:02:43.410 to having things sorted alphabetically by name. This method of sorting is only 00:02:43.410 --> 00:02:50.310 available in the "Details" view. If I switch to one of the other views -- maybe 00:02:50.310 --> 00:02:58.380 the medium icons view -- I can still sort, but to do so, I would right-click on a 00:02:58.380 --> 00:03:03.450 blank part of the pan' and then choose "Sort by," and select the field I'd like to 00:03:03.450 --> 00:03:08.850 sort by -- again maybe "Date modified" -- maybe I'd like to have all the things that 00:03:08.850 --> 00:03:14.100 were modified fairly recently close together so I can see that I remember that I 00:03:14.100 --> 00:03:19.110 wanted to work with a Word document that I worked with just last week but I don't 00:03:19.110 --> 00:03:24.269 remember what the name of the document was. By sorting according to 00:03:24.269 --> 00:03:28.860 "Last modified," I'd be able to see fairly quickly which document was modified in 00:03:28.860 --> 00:03:36.650 the past week. The sort order and the view that you use do not change the 00:03:36.650 --> 00:03:41.489 contents of the folder; neither one changes the contents of the folder. You 00:03:41.489 --> 00:03:48.000 may use any sort order and any view that you find useful. Sometimes you might want to 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.080 change back and forth between the views; that is entirely your choice. One of the 00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:56.220 advantage of modern operating systems is that you do have the 00:03:56.220 --> 00:04:01.820 customization. So go and choose whatever you'd like to do
