This is our opening slide for all of the lectures. So what does it mean? It's called Incheon Bridge, and it's located in South Korea, near Seoul. This bridge was finished in 2009, and now it connects the airport serving Seoul to what's called Songdo Business District, which was built on reclaimed land. The private contract owner behind the bridge was Samsung. One reason we chose this particular image is simply that South Korea has itself been successful in terms of economic development. When it comes to development, Alex and I are very much optimists. But look more carefully at this picture, which was taken before the bridge was finished. You can see the bridge is incomplete. We view economic development as something which is always in process. Most importantly, this image reflects an underlying philosophy of education, namely that we should always be trying to bridge gaps in our knowledge.
