0:00:00.429,0:00:05.089 There is a box, in the corner of my sewing[br]room. It is a box whose contents have not 0:00:05.089,0:00:07.829 seen the[br]light of day for many a month. Many crafters 0:00:07.829,0:00:11.940 will be familiar with this box,[br]in all of its forms: There’s the ever-growing 0:00:11.940,0:00:15.060 amorphous lump[br]that lies underneath your desk… The monster 0:00:15.060,0:00:18.730 underneath your bed…[br]The stuff you vacuum-packed in a fit of organization 0:00:18.730,0:00:22.050 and stuffed into your garage in the hopes[br]that you’d never have to deal with it again… 0:00:22.050,0:00:25.960 This, my friends, is the UNFINISHED SEWING[br]PILE. 0:00:25.960,0:00:39.160 The item that I’m pulling out of the style[br]pile box today is – oh man, look at this. 0:00:39.160,0:00:43.590 Why isn’t this box getting any emptier!![br]I have to stop adding stuff to it! 0:00:43.590,0:00:47.890 Anyway, I thrifted this incredible sweater[br]for about $1 the other week – LOOK AT THE 0:00:47.890,0:00:53.079 SLEEVES – but unfortunately it also had[br]a bunch of holes in it, which is probably 0:00:53.079,0:00:55.000 why it was at the thrift shop in the first[br]place. 0:00:55.000,0:00:58.969 So, today I’m going to show you how to mend[br]holes in knitted fabrics like this one. 0:00:58.969,0:01:03.260 Now, what I’m going to need is thread in[br]a colour that matches the clothes I want to 0:01:03.260,0:01:08.890 fix, a needle, and something kinda small and[br]round to lay the item over – like a water 0:01:08.890,0:01:14.470 bottle. This is like, the proper thing that[br]you’re meant to use, called a darning egg. 0:01:14.470,0:01:16.990 But something shaped like this bottle works[br]just fine. 0:01:16.990,0:01:21.000 First, I thread my needle with the thread,[br]double it over, and I tie a couple of knots 0:01:21.000,0:01:22.189 in the end. 0:01:22.189,0:01:27.909 Then I turn the sweater inside out, and I[br]lay the hole-y part of the sweater down on top of the bottle. 0:01:29.000,0:01:31.880 First thing that I’m[br]going to do is to hand-stitch all the way 0:01:31.880,0:01:33.580 around the hole’s edges. 0:01:33.580,0:01:37.560 I do this by working my needle up and down[br]through the knitted stitches that are already 0:01:37.560,0:01:41.180 there, which will help to make this mending[br]pretty much invisible. 0:01:47.640,0:01:52.520 Once I'd sewn all the way around the hole,[br]next I’m going to sew a kind of lattice 0:01:52.530,0:01:55.700 across the hole, gently pulling it closed[br]as I go. 0:01:55.700,0:01:59.659 So here's the first part where I’m going[br]across the hole, weaving my needle up and 0:01:59.659,0:02:03.659 down through the knit like this.[br]I pull the thread all the way through, and 0:02:03.660,0:02:06.620 then I head back in the other direction. 0:02:13.880,0:02:15.880 And I keep doing this until I’ve gone across 0:02:15.889,0:02:19.239 the hole.[br]The hole is definitely getting less noticeable! 0:02:19.239,0:02:23.549 To make the hole really disappear, I’m now[br]going to go up and down over the hole, like 0:02:23.549,0:02:25.960 this.[br]So, I go up, 0:02:30.060,0:02:32.060 and then I go down... working 0:02:32.069,0:02:34.469 my way over where the hole used to be! 0:02:34.469,0:02:39.219 When the hole is totally closed up, I tie[br]a knot in the end of the thread, and I do 0:02:39.219,0:02:43.909 this by slipping my needle underneath a thread[br]at the back, pulling the thread through until 0:02:43.909,0:02:47.999 there’s just a small loop left, like this,[br]and then I push my needle through the loop 0:02:47.999,0:02:52.049 and I pull the thread through to make a knot.[br]I repeated this a couple of times just to 0:02:52.049,0:02:55.779 make the knot a little bit bigger, and then[br]I cut off the rest of the thread. 0:02:55.779,0:03:00.059 And, the hole is closed! Flip the sweater[br]around to the right side, and you can hardly 0:03:00.059,0:03:02.579 even tell that there was even a hole there. 0:03:07.379,0:03:12.849 I LOVE this sweater, and it’s big ol’[br]70s style sleeves! I’m very excited to wear 0:03:12.849,0:03:13.699 it out and about. 0:03:13.699,0:03:18.209 By the way, would you guys be interested in[br]a “thrifted lookbook” of some sort? I’ve 0:03:18.209,0:03:21.650 had a bunch of amazing thrift hauls recently,[br]and I wouldn’t mind sharing them in the 0:03:21.650,0:03:26.129 form of an outfit video. I did a few outfit[br]lookbooks last year, and they’re really 0:03:26.129,0:03:28.079 fun to make! So, let me know! 0:03:28.079,0:03:31.959 Thanks for watching! I hope you all learned[br]something, and I’ll see you all in my next 0:03:31.959,0:03:33.010 video!
