0:00:00.200,0:00:03.220 [intro music] 0:00:03.340,0:00:05.060 This video is supported by Clue. 0:00:05.320,0:00:11.000 Hello! Welcome to a special half-episode of[br]Make Thrift Buy. So I mentioned in episode 0:00:11.000,0:00:16.510 53 that I’d be doing a more customisable[br]sports bra: “And then, I will also do an 0:00:16.510,0:00:22.119 episode 53.5 which will show you the harder,[br]but much more customisable way to do this”. 0:00:22.119,0:00:25.830 Welp, this is that video! And that’s what[br]I’m going to be doing today! 0:00:25.830,0:00:27.189 So, let’s jump right into it! 0:00:27.189,0:00:32.270 So today I’m going to be turning this t-shirt[br]here into a sports-bra style crop top. 0:00:32.270,0:00:35.239 First we need to start off by making a pattern. 0:00:35.239,0:00:40.300 Now I used a tight-fitting singlet top to[br]base my pattern off – this singlet top here 0:00:40.300,0:00:44.760 eventually became the rainbow crop top you[br]saw at the end of episode 53 – but before 0:00:44.760,0:00:46.940 I cut it up, I made a pattern out of it! 0:00:46.940,0:00:51.620 So with this singlet top and some butchers[br]paper, I folded the singlet top in half like 0:00:51.620,0:00:54.100 this, so that the front was facing outwards. 0:00:54.100,0:00:58.089 Then, I laid it flat down onto the paper,[br]with the fold matching up with the straight 0:00:58.089,0:01:03.180 edge of the paper here, and I traced around[br]these edges. Because I wanted it to be cropped, 0:01:03.180,0:01:07.280 I didn’t copy the bottom of the singlet[br]top, instead I drew a straight line across 0:01:07.280,0:01:11.770 here, 14 inches below the top of the shoulder,[br]to make the pattern shorter. 0:01:11.770,0:01:15.840 And I traced it out in pencil whiiiich you[br]can’t see on camera, so I’m just going 0:01:15.840,0:01:18.270 to go over those lines in marker now. 0:01:18.270,0:01:22.780 I then added a seam allowance of ½ an inch[br]around the armhole, top of the shoulder strap 0:01:22.780,0:01:26.790 and the neckline. And I added a seam allowance[br]to the side of the pattern as well. 0:01:26.790,0:01:30.810 And then, I drew this arrow here, on the straight[br]edge, because it will indicate where I will 0:01:30.810,0:01:33.579 place the pattern on the fold of the fabric[br]later on. 0:01:33.579,0:01:37.500 Then, I cut around the outside lines with[br]some scissors and that’s my front pattern 0:01:37.500,0:01:38.619 piece done. 0:01:38.619,0:01:42.789 I did the exact same thing for the back pattern[br]piece, so I folded the singlet the other way, 0:01:42.789,0:01:47.270 so the BACK was facing out, laid it flat on[br]the paper, with the fold matching the straight 0:01:47.270,0:01:50.640 edge of paper, and I traced around it like[br]this. 0:01:50.640,0:01:54.950 I actually used the front pattern piece to[br]make sure that the straps were the same width 0:01:54.950,0:01:59.060 on both the front and back pieces, and that[br]they were both the same length as well. 0:02:00.740,0:02:06.240 Also, I added the same seam allowances as I did[br]on the front piece and then I cut it out. 0:02:11.260,0:02:15.020 So now I have both the pattern pieces that[br]I need, the front and the back piece – and 0:02:15.020,0:02:17.000 it’s time to get started cutting out fabric! 0:02:18.000,0:02:22.720 So this thrifted t-shirt is what I’m going[br]to be using for my fabric. So first I cut 0:02:22.720,0:02:27.920 the front and the back pieces apart by cutting[br]up the side seams, and around the arm holes. 0:02:31.730,0:02:36.200 Starting on the front, because I want this[br]logo to be on the front of my sports bra, 0:02:36.200,0:02:40.410 I folded it in half right-sides together like[br]this, making sure that the fabric was all 0:02:40.410,0:02:45.360 flat underneath, and then I placed the pattern[br]piece on top, with this FOLD arrow pointing 0:02:45.360,0:02:47.060 towards the FOLD of the fabric. 0:02:47.060,0:02:48.710 Then, I cut around this. 0:02:48.710,0:02:52.950 To cut it out, I just put a bunch of heavy[br]items on top of the paper and fabric to hold 0:02:52.950,0:02:55.860 them down and I went around the edges with[br]my rotary cutter. 0:03:00.560,0:03:04.980 So initially, I wanted to keep the original[br]neckline, as you can see me doing here – but 0:03:04.980,0:03:08.980 in the end that got too complicated, so I[br]did cut it off. 0:03:08.980,0:03:13.450 I then did the same for the back – folded[br]it in half, right sides together, placed the 0:03:13.450,0:03:15.880 back pattern down on the fold, and cut it[br]out. 0:03:19.060,0:03:22.500 So here’s my cut out front and back pieces. 0:03:22.510,0:03:26.510 To sew them together, I placed the back piece[br]down facing right-sides up, and I put the 0:03:26.510,0:03:29.820 front piece on top of it, right sides-down. 0:03:34.920,0:03:36.920 And I sewed them together at the shoulders 0:03:36.920,0:03:38.370 and the side seams. 0:03:38.370,0:03:42.200 Now you want to use a thread in a matching[br]colour for this – this was the closest colour 0:03:42.200,0:03:47.430 thread that I had on hand, but this one here,[br]if it hadn't almost run out – would have 0:03:47.430,0:03:48.430 been better. 0:03:48.430,0:03:53.200 So, I sewed the shoulders and side seams together[br]using a standard zig zag stitch, like this. 0:03:58.980,0:04:02.900 Next, I’m applying elastic to the top’s[br]armholes and the neck hole. 0:04:02.910,0:04:07.510 So with the top inside out, I roughly measured[br]out how much elastic I would need to go around 0:04:07.510,0:04:11.820 the armhole, so I wouldn’t go drastically[br]over or under this amount and have a loose 0:04:11.820,0:04:16.130 or a too-tight armhole, which I did by placing[br]the elastic at the bottom of the arm hole 0:04:16.130,0:04:19.680 and then stretching it gently to the top,[br]then doubling this measurement. 0:04:19.680,0:04:23.680 Then to apply the elastic, and I’m just[br]showing you the armhole application however 0:04:23.680,0:04:28.000 it’s the same for the neckline as well,[br]I put the armhole underneath my sewing machine 0:04:28.000,0:04:33.430 like this, then I put the elastic on top at[br]the edge of the fabric. I put the sewing machine’s 0:04:33.430,0:04:37.949 foot down, did a little backstitch to keep[br]them in place. Then, I gently stretched the 0:04:37.949,0:04:43.300 elastic, like this, and I slowly did a zig-zag[br]stitch right in the middle of the elastic, 0:04:43.300,0:04:45.500 attaching the elastic along the fabric’s[br]edge. 0:04:45.500,0:04:50.100 I continued gently stretching the elastic[br]as I went, all the way around the armhole, 0:04:50.100,0:04:52.440 until I got back around to the start. 0:04:59.000,0:05:03.200 When I got back to where I started, I clipped[br]the elastic off, and I sewed the two ends 0:05:03.200,0:05:06.800 of the elastic together, on top of the armhole,[br]like this. 0:05:13.700,0:05:19.340 To finish off the armhole, I folded it over[br]once like this – so this is kinnnda like 0:05:19.340,0:05:24.370 doing a hem except there’s elastic inside,[br]and I sewed around it once again using a zig-zag 0:05:24.370,0:05:28.610 stitch. I also continued to stretch it gently[br]so that there was no bunching in the fabric 0:05:28.610,0:05:32.479 – you’ll actually be able to feel how[br]much you’ll need to stretch it this time 0:05:32.479,0:05:36.081 around, this only really makes sense once[br]you’re actually sewing but yeah. Stretch 0:05:36.081,0:05:39.430 it the same amount all the way around the[br]armhole – and you’re done. 0:05:39.430,0:05:43.349 Now once I’d done that for both armholes[br]and for the neckline, I just needed to attach 0:05:43.349,0:05:47.879 an elastic band at the bottom. So I showed[br]you all how to do this in better detail in 0:05:47.879,0:05:51.210 episode #53, so I’m just going to go through[br]it very quickly here. 0:05:51.210,0:05:55.009 I quartered both the elastic band, which I'd[br]measured to fit my waist, and bottom of the 0:05:55.009,0:05:59.940 top with pins, and then I sewed them together,[br]right-sides together, all the way around the 0:05:59.940,0:06:04.259 top’s bottom edge, stretching the elastic[br]so that the pins met up. 0:06:04.259,0:06:08.960 Then I unfolded the elastic and I’m done.[br]Now you can also top-stitch the elastic down 0:06:08.960,0:06:13.199 like this, but that’s totally up to you.[br]I find that it doesn’t really matter whether 0:06:13.199,0:06:14.919 its top-stitched or not. 0:06:14.920,0:06:17.120 Soooo time for the reveal! How did I go? 0:06:20.340,0:06:24.700 [Fun electronic music plays] 0:06:35.940,0:06:41.520 I actually made 3 sports bras in this way![br]This orange one, this Marvel one and this 0:06:41.520,0:06:46.300 green one, all from old t-shirts, but you[br]don’t have to use an old t-shirt – you 0:06:46.300,0:06:49.660 can use any fabric that you want (as long[br]as it's stretchy). 0:07:01.320,0:07:05.540 Now, here’s some tips on making it more[br]supportive if you want to use this more as 0:07:05.550,0:07:09.259 a sports bra, or if you wanna go bra-free[br]underneath. 0:07:09.259,0:07:12.559 So you can make it tighter-fitting at the[br]sides. So, when you’re making your pattern, 0:07:12.559,0:07:16.340 don't add a seam allowance at the sides, and[br]bring it in a little bit. 0:07:16.340,0:07:21.159 You can also use a thicker elastic band, and[br]also make the top SHORTER so that the elastic 0:07:21.159,0:07:25.180 band is just underneath your bust, kind of[br]holding everything up. 0:07:25.180,0:07:28.090 You can also copy your pattern off something[br]with a T-back. 0:07:28.090,0:07:31.530 Or you can make thicker straps while you're[br]making your pattern, and you can also make 0:07:31.530,0:07:33.240 the straps a little bit shorter. 0:07:33.240,0:07:38.129 And you can also use power mesh or something[br]else similar like that for your fabric. You 0:07:38.129,0:07:41.470 don’t need to use an old-tshirt, or, if[br]you want to use an old t-shirt, you could 0:07:41.470,0:07:43.939 line it with power mesh fabric as well. 0:07:43.939,0:07:48.050 But if you’re above a C-cup, or you wanna[br]do some really intense workouts with this 0:07:48.050,0:07:51.910 thing, you’re probably still better off[br]with an actual sports bra because they’re 0:07:51.910,0:07:56.550 made with these fancy materials that wick[br]moisture away, and are also made this super 0:07:56.550,0:08:00.439 fancy equipment which is beyond the scope[br]of home-sewers. 0:08:00.439,0:08:04.150 Still, give it a go! Worse comes to worst,[br]you'll end up with a cute, fashionable crop 0:08:04.150,0:08:07.419 top. And if you’ve got any more useful tips,[br]leave them in the comments below! 0:08:07.419,0:08:12.569 I hope you enjoyed this video, sadly it’s[br]coming to the end of the warm season here 0:08:12.569,0:08:17.930 in Australia so I’m packing all of my crop[br]tops and sports bras away for the next few 0:08:17.930,0:08:21.810 months – but I know that a lot of you watching[br]are from the Northern Hemisphere, so I hope 0:08:21.810,0:08:26.080 you can make good use out of this tutorial![br]If you do, I’d love to see the results, 0:08:26.080,0:08:29.639 tag them with #diyannika on Instagram to show[br]them to me. 0:08:29.639,0:08:35.370 Now it’s time for some period talk! Uh - what[br]Annika? What? This video took a left-turn. 0:08:35.370,0:08:38.890 Yeahhh, but if you’re a person who gets[br]their period, I recommend that you stick around 0:08:38.890,0:08:43.720 for the next part. This video is sponsored[br]by an app called Clue. Clue tracks your period 0:08:43.720,0:08:49.160 and I’ve personally been using the app myself[br]for almost 2 years, and I think that it is 0:08:49.160,0:08:53.820 such a useful application, which is why I’m[br]going to tell you all about it right now. 0:08:53.820,0:08:59.970 Now Clue – C-L-U-E – is a FREE app, that[br]you can get on the iOS and the android app 0:08:59.970,0:09:03.700 stores, and since I started to use it almost[br]2 years ago, I actually don’t know how I 0:09:03.700,0:09:08.110 would live without this app. I have a lot[br]of unrelated health stuff going on, if you 0:09:08.110,0:09:12.450 follow my social media accounts you know all[br]about that – but knowing when my period 0:09:12.450,0:09:16.460 is going to turn up is pretty useful because[br]it’s just one less thing that I have to 0:09:16.460,0:09:21.190 worry about. I also take a lot of medications[br]that mess around with my hormones, so having 0:09:21.190,0:09:26.810 this information for myself and for my doctor[br]is just really useful. And it’s free. Guys, 0:09:26.810,0:09:28.870 it's free. I fricken love this app. 0:09:28.870,0:09:35.020 Okay so I wanna show you all how this actually[br]works so… we can’t really avoid this - you’re 0:09:35.020,0:09:36.540 all going to know my cycle now. 0:09:37.560,0:09:38.180 Cool. 0:09:38.360,0:09:43.580 Oooh boy. Okay so I actually didn’t realise[br]how close I was to my next period, and now 0:09:43.580,0:09:49.840 I know to be prepared. Now there’s actually[br]reminders you turn on so that you know when 0:09:49.840,0:09:53.210 your next period is coming - I'm going to[br]turn these on now. 0:09:53.210,0:09:57.880 Now I find THIS reminder here really useful[br]– these clouds are telling me, from tracking 0:09:57.880,0:10:03.170 my cycle for the past 2 years, that I’m[br]probably about to start having PMS. So when 0:10:03.170,0:10:08.660 I’m randomly crying at babies on TV and[br]I don’t know why I check the app and then 0:10:08.660,0:10:13.780 I’m like, oh yeah, PMS, cool cool cool.[br]I’m not losing my mind, it’s just Aunt 0:10:13.780,0:10:14.780 Flo. 0:10:14.780,0:10:18.680 So this app has been rated #1 by a bunch of[br]doctors and top researchers, and I’ve used 0:10:18.680,0:10:22.430 it in my own doctors appointments as well[br]– and it can also show you: when you’re 0:10:22.430,0:10:26.710 most fertile if you’re trying to get pregnant,[br]and it also now comes with a pill-tracking 0:10:26.710,0:10:29.750 feature as well if you’re on the pill. One[br]of the best things that I’ve found with 0:10:29.750,0:10:33.650 the app is it that gives you a lot of good[br]quality information about what’s considered 0:10:33.650,0:10:38.890 normy... normy?? [laughs] about what's considered[br]normal and healthy with your period – I’ve 0:10:38.890,0:10:42.370 actually learnt some stuff on here that I[br]never got taught in health classes in school 0:10:42.370,0:10:46.960 – so when I’m freaking out that something[br]isn’t normal the app usually tells me that 0:10:46.960,0:10:50.380 it is – but it also does say when you should[br]probably go and see a doctor as well. 0:10:50.380,0:10:55.890 OH YEAH and I don’t use this feature myself,[br]uh because I’m generally a private person 0:10:55.890,0:11:01.450 - says the girl who is sharing this with literally[br]hundreds of thousands of people - 0:11:01.450,0:11:05.910 But you can share your cycle with other people[br]as well, so, you know, the people you live 0:11:05.910,0:11:09.560 with or your partner, your best friend, whatever[br]- which can be pretty useful! 0:11:09.560,0:11:14.140 So yeah, I have a link to download Clue in[br]the description box below, or you can find 0:11:14.140,0:11:18.030 it on your app store by just typing in CLUE.[br]Thank you for supporting the companies that 0:11:18.030,0:11:22.620 support my channel, I’m very selective with[br]my sponsorship opportunities and I always 0:11:22.620,0:11:26.200 believe in the companies that I bring to you[br]guys, so you know that my promotion of this 0:11:26.200,0:11:28.190 app is LEGIT. Clue rocks. The end. 0:11:28.190,0:11:31.900 Thanks for watching and I’ll see you all[br]next time. Bye! 0:11:31.900,0:11:36.220 Thank you to all of my supporters on Patreon[br]for making these videos possible. 0:11:36.220,0:11:40.140 To become my patreon supporter, go to patreon.com/annikavictoria!
