0:00:11.465,0:00:17.309 A major battle has begun for a city in Iraq, and that's where we begin today's show. I'm Carl Azus, 0:00:17.309,0:00:23.080 thank you for watching. Fallujah is located in central Iraq, along the banks of the Euphrates River. 0:00:23.080,0:00:29.810 It's been controlled by the ISIS terrorist group since early 2014. In fact, it was the first Iraqi city that ISIS 0:00:29.810,0:00:36.764 captured as part of its plan to create its own Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The fight to take Fallujah back 0:00:36.764,0:00:43.048 involves Iraqi troops, police, and militias and they're supported by US led air strikes. But trapped in the 0:00:43.048,0:00:49.963 crossfire between these forces and the ISIS fighters who control the city, an estimated 10, 000 civilian families, 0:00:49.963,0:00:55.970 according to the United Nations. The Iraqi Air Force dropped leaflets on the city, telling residents how 0:00:55.970,0:01:02.641 they can get out safely. But activists in the area say ISIS is not allowing civilians to go and that some have 0:01:02.641,0:01:09.671 died trying to leave. Falluja is where dozens of US troops were killed during the Iraq war in 2004. 0:01:09.671,0:01:17.820 It's a strategic city that's no stranger to terrorist or violence. Falluja has a long history of bloody battles. 0:01:17.820,0:01:21.702 It's considered A hotbed of Sunni insurgent groups. 0:01:21.702,0:01:33.050 This was the first city to fall to ISIS months before any other city in Iraq, in January of 2014. Extremist groups 0:01:33.050,0:01:40.339 like ISIS and Al Qaeda in Iraq before that used Falluja as a symbol of Sunni resistance. Now for the 0:01:40.339,0:01:47.370 Shias of Iraq, many of them feel that a lot of the terrorist attacks that target them, whether it's ISIS or Al Qaeda 0:01:47.370,0:01:53.234 in Iraq before that, those attacks, they feel, stem from Falluja, especially with its proximity to Baghdad. 0:01:53.234,0:01:59.536 So they really have wanted to see ISIS cleared out of that city for a very long time. 0:02:03.206,0:02:09.778 Now with this new offensive underway right now, it's expected to last a very long time and expected to be 0:02:09.778,0:02:11.373 bloody if history is anything to go by. 0:02:11.373,0:02:17.423 Here what remains a major issue is the civilians who may still be trapped inside that city. 0:02:18.833,0:02:23.933 The head of security for the US Transportation Security Administration has lost his job. 0:02:23.933,0:02:29.351 A house of representatives committee announced the change earlier this week. It followed a congressional 0:02:29.351,0:02:34.799 hearing on mismanagement at the TSA. The organization's in charge of screening passengers and 0:02:34.799,0:02:41.629 cargo at airports across the US. But the Department of Homeland Security which oversees the TSA says, 0:02:41.629,0:02:48.218 it's had a number of security failures recently and some have swelled long lines at airport checkpoints, 0:02:48.218,0:02:54.311 causing hundreds of passengers to miss their flights. The TSA says, Kelly Hogan wasn't fired specifically 0:02:54.311,0:02:59.107 for doing anything wrong, but that the agency wanted a different approach to security leadership. 0:02:59.107,0:03:03.449 It's saying that a number of management changes are ahead, and that they'll deliver better 0:03:03.449,0:03:06.602 leadership and screening operations at American airports. 0:03:06.602,0:03:17.725 Starting in Brazil on today's call of the roll, the nation has 26 states and in the northeast state of Ceara Hello 0:03:17.725,0:03:25.444 to all of our viewers at Escola de Ensino Medio Liceu do Crato. San Juan Hills High School is next, from 0:03:25.444,0:03:32.499 the US state of California. The Stallions are roaming in San Juan Capistrano. And one state over in Arizona, 0:03:32.499,0:03:34.784 we've got some Wolverines watching today. 0:03:34.784,0:03:39.444 Mountain Vista Middle School rounds out our roll from San Tan Valley. 0:03:39.444,0:03:45.694 The Walkman, the floppy disk, the dot matrix printer, and the VHS, the video home system. 0:03:45.694,0:03:51.478 These are some of the inventions of the 1970s, that have become obsolete with the passage of time, 0:03:51.478,0:03:57.164 and the progress of technology. But there are some designs of the disco era that we can't imagine 0:03:57.164,0:04:04.440 living without. Email, the first video game, cell phones, and one thing that doesn't get a lot of credit but has 0:04:04.440,0:04:07.170 revolutionized shopping, the barcode. 0:04:07.170,0:04:16.040 On June 26, 1974, a pack of Juicy Fruit gum made history when it was the first item to ever be scanned via 0:04:16.040,0:04:23.432 a state of the art technology, the bar code. And now, more than 40 years later, 5 billion bar codes 0:04:23.432,0:04:25.924 are scanned every day across the world. 0:04:25.924,0:04:39.661 The code itself, you know those black lines of varying width on the label was inspired by mores code. 0:04:39.661,0:04:47.679 But the holy smokes component of the innovation was how it was scanned, by lasers. Lasers had 0:04:47.679,0:04:53.693 been the stuff of nerd fantasy until the early 1960's, when the Hughes Aircraft Company unveiled the 0:04:53.693,0:04:59.780 first one at a press conference. A Los Angeles newspaper reported the story underneath the headline, 0:04:59.780,0:05:07.571 LA Man DIscovers Science Fiction Death Ray. But the fact of the matter is, no one knew what to do with that 0:05:07.571,0:05:14.964 new technology until that June morning in 1974 when a pack of Juicy Fruit gum in Ohio changed the world. 0:05:14.964,0:05:22.219 Today, bar codes are the unsung heroes that make everything from shipping, into boarding an airplane to 0:05:22.219,0:05:29.224 keeping track of medication possible. But the biggest beneficiary is retail. Think about a grocery store from 0:05:29.224,0:05:36.259 yesteryear, every individual item had to be marked with a price and the cashier had to manually input it 0:05:36.259,0:05:43.655 into the register. So thanks to the bar code, you're waiting in the checkout line a whole lot less. And the 0:05:43.655,0:05:49.527 stores themselves have benefited big time. The bar codes allow them to keep accurate real time inventory. 0:05:49.527,0:05:55.143 That's a major advance in efficiency. Even in the costs in groceries staff their jobs. 0:06:01.323,0:06:08.373 For about 20 people who live in a housing project in Richmond, Virginia, Craig Dodson has become a sort 0:06:08.373,0:06:15.017 of father figure. The 37 year old leads a non profit organization called Richmond Cycling Core. It allows 0:06:15.017,0:06:20.103 young people who's opportunities are extremely limited and who's schools are some of the lowest 0:06:20.103,0:06:27.571 performing to join cycling teams and to train to ride. The lessons and the benefits go far beyond the bike trails. 0:06:27.571,0:06:31.655 All right. Come on back guys. Rows of five. 0:06:31.655,0:06:34.169 The thing is for you, you got to get in the woods, all right? 0:06:34.169,0:06:37.668 And then settle into your rhythm, you know what I mean? 0:06:37.668,0:06:44.959 Stay positive, run, run, there you go that's how it's done. 0:06:44.959,0:06:51.238 All during the race, we see our kids are going through this rollercoaster of emotion. 0:06:51.238,0:07:00.361 Come on, Jay. I know you fell dude, but you got this. What a lot of people can't see is that our kids have the 0:07:00.361,0:07:06.739 equivalent of ten suitcases each of baggage that they are carrying on that bike. 0:07:06.739,0:07:15.166 The kids live in Richmond Public Housing. It's not just bad because of drugs, violence, guns. 0:07:15.166,0:07:19.270 Goodbye. 0:07:19.270,0:07:23.571 You ain't gotta swerve. You gotta tighten up, man. I'm not playing with you right now, man. 0:07:23.571,0:07:28.970 I'm being serious. You're clowning way too hard. That's why we've been on you so hard. 0:07:28.970,0:07:32.478 Matt's gonna be here in the morning to pick you up. We're tired of getting messages from everyone 0:07:32.478,0:07:37.380 that you're ducking school. It's gotta stop or you're gonna fail 9th grade. 0:07:37.380,0:07:44.823 We gotta get Antonio. Our organization is not about giving kids positive life experiences through bikes. 0:07:44.823,0:07:50.804 Our job is to get them out of public housing. The bad news is you gotta little suspension. 0:07:50.804,0:07:53.739 So we can pick him up in the morning this week, put him to work at least. 0:07:53.739,0:07:55.422 That's what I do here with him. 0:07:55.422,0:07:56.662 This is a war to me. 0:07:56.662,0:07:58.114 What time do you wake up? 0:07:58.114,0:08:04.469 It's me against the circumstances these kids live in. Thought I was gonna let you off the chain, man? 0:08:04.469,0:08:11.472 You come in and hold them accountable and it shows a level of care that their not use to. 0:08:15.292,0:08:23.133 He taught me to be your own person. Don't be what you live around. You never give up. 0:08:23.133,0:08:24.360 I'm so proud of you man. 0:08:24.360,0:08:30.460 We see the side of these kids that is genius. There are so many things that we wish the world could see. 0:08:30.460,0:08:32.362 These are kids that have been let down. 0:08:32.362,0:08:35.654 Guys, we'll pick you up tomorrow, man, at the same time, all right? 0:08:35.654,0:08:41.009 My promise to them is, I'm not going to leave you. Good job, today. All right, I'll see you Thursday. 0:08:41.009,0:08:41.979 All right. 0:08:48.339,0:08:54.832 Those of you who were not Star Wars fans are gonna see this and think, okay, well loud sliding door. 0:08:54.832,0:09:03.300 Those of you who are Star Wars fans might hear it and think 0:09:03.300,0:09:08.301 So again, the R2- D2 screaming door. 0:09:08.301,0:09:19.989 Maybe the laughter is not as infectious as the viral Chewbacca mask video. But it certainly made 0:09:19.989,0:09:26.607 some folks Chewbac- up to hear it again thinking it was R2- D2 good to Skywalk through just Ob- 1 time. 0:09:26.607,0:09:32.382 That's it for today's pun solo, it's part of my Jabba and for putting up with them. Yoda the best. 0:09:32.382,0:09:34.133 CNN Student News, we'll catch you Vader.
