0:00:06.177,0:00:09.747 Matthew Ritchie: "The Morning Line" 0:00:10.017,0:00:13.866 In the last couple of years, I've been exploring the idea 0:00:13.866,0:00:17.249 of how to move, kind of, drawing into the environment, 0:00:17.249,0:00:22.885 And in a sense, as I began working more and more with large institutions and architects, 0:00:22.885,0:00:30.283 It became pretty clear that an architectural engagement was really an important part of the process. 0:00:30.283,0:00:34.866 And at the same time, I wanted to preserve this idea that is very intrinsic to my work-- 0:00:34.866,0:00:38.299 The idea of an accident, or the chance encounter. 0:00:38.299,0:00:44.015 And obviously, the two things are very different, because architecture is kind of focused on 0:00:44.015,0:00:47.515 making sure that everything is always the same, every time--the building doesn't fall down. 0:00:47.515,0:00:52.853 The taps work, the windows work... Everything has to be very fixed. 0:00:53.705,0:01:01.021 So a piece like "The Morning Line", you start to engage in a really strong dynamic between 0:01:01.021,0:01:08.304 forces of chance that you might be able to control inside a gallery, and forces of chance that you can't control at all, 0:01:08.304,0:01:12.037 Like rain, and wind, and erosion... 0:01:12.037,0:01:16.114 And also, large scale institutional expectations for large groups of people. 0:01:16.114,0:01:22.020 As soon as you put things outside, people don't behave the way they behave in a gallery. 0:01:22.020,0:01:27.370 So then, the question becomes: Can you add anything to that, in the way of chance encounters. 0:01:27.370,0:01:30.203 Can you increase the randomness of the world, 0:01:30.203,0:01:35.488 And create an environment which can sustain a kind of pleasure in that randomness. 0:01:35.488,0:01:37.205 And also make it meaningful. 0:01:37.205,0:01:42.571 You could just be in a street corner and throw eggs at people. That would be pretty random too. [Laughs] 0:01:42.571,0:01:47.320 But you want to create something that has a larger meaning and create, sort of, more depth. 0:01:47.320,0:01:52.936 But actually bringing it into the world rather than sequestered in the vault of the gallery.
