0:00:00.060,0:00:05.148 At one point or another, you've probably heard the old saying[br]about "sending horses to the glue factory" 0:00:05.148,0:00:10.423 when they get old and sick. Jokes about making horses[br]into glue pop up in places like the Simpsons, 0:00:10.423,0:00:13.411 and—shockingly—copious internet memes. 0:00:13.411,0:00:18.025 So if you've ever wondered if glue really is made[br]from horses, you're not alone. 0:00:18.025,0:00:22.320 And if you've ever tried Googling it,[br]get ready to hear an entirely different answer. 0:00:22.320,0:00:25.748 From the myths and facts about horse [br]glue, to vegan glue options, 0:00:25.748,0:00:31.260 to how to tell if a product contains animal glue, [br]I'm here to guide you through this sticky subject. 0:00:42.445,0:00:47.100 Hi, it's Emily from BiteSizeVegan.org, [br]where you can find free resources, eCourses, 0:00:47.100,0:00:50.000 kids' content, and a Guided Search [br]to help you find just what you need, 0:00:50.000,0:00:51.498 even if you don't know what to ask! 0:00:51.498,0:00:55.320 All my sources and additional info[br]are available in this video’s article, 0:00:55.320,0:00:59.070 where I cover significantly more information [br]than we're going to go through in the video. 0:00:59.070,0:01:04.137 So, to dive in deeper, go to bitesize.link/IsGlueVegan 0:01:04.137,0:01:11.744 So, is glue made from horses? Well, horse skin, bones, connective[br]tissues, and hooves can be used to make glue. 0:01:11.744,0:01:14.450 However, while countless blog posts around the internet 0:01:14.450,0:01:17.788 claim that horses have been[br]made into glue for thousands of years, 0:01:17.788,0:01:22.641 I could not find any solid evidence that horses[br]were ever used more than any other animal. 0:01:22.641,0:01:29.054 In fact, horses were not even directly mentioned in any of the[br]academic, industry, and historical-minded sources I read. 0:01:29.054,0:01:33.209 This is not to say that glue has never[br]been made from horses—it has. 0:01:33.209,0:01:37.828 In fact, it's entirely possible that parts of horses [br]slaughtered in today's horse meat industry 0:01:37.828,0:01:43.504 are used to make animal glue. But the idea that [br]animal glue was—or is—primarily made from horses 0:01:43.504,0:01:50.131 is most likely a myth, overblown stereotype or—my [br]personal guess—a manifestation of speciesism. 0:01:50.131,0:01:54.260 If you're not familiar, "speciesism" is “a [br]prejudice or attitude of bias in favour 0:01:54.260,0:01:58.210 of the interests of one species and [br]against those of other species.” 0:01:58.210,0:02:01.749 A simplified example is how[br]we love dogs but eat pigs. 0:02:01.749,0:02:07.720 Speciesism presumes that humans determine[br]the inherent value of other sentient beings. 0:02:07.720,0:02:13.445 In regards to this topic, our human bias for [br]horses over those beings we deem "food animals" 0:02:13.445,0:02:18.711 became extremely apparent when I compared[br]keyword research (meaning what people Google) 0:02:18.711,0:02:22.194 to academic research (meaning reality). 0:02:22.688,0:02:25.712 This may sound boring, but stick with me for a moment. 0:02:26.942,0:02:27.834 Pun intended. 0:02:28.096,0:02:33.756 As of this video, the phrase "is glue made from [br]horses" is searched for 5,000 times a month, 0:02:33.756,0:02:38.286 while the phrase "is glue made from cows" [br]receives 60 searches a month. 0:02:38.286,0:02:43.625 Even more telling, the phrase "is glue[br]made from pigs" returned no data at all. 0:02:43.925,0:02:50.910 Yet, the reality is that most animal glue is made from[br]cows and pigs slaughtered in the meat and dairy industries. 0:02:50.910,0:02:56.310 For an idea of the disparity, in the same year [br]that 138,000 horses from the United States 0:02:56.310,0:03:04.290 were sent to slaughter, 34.2 million cows and [br]110.3 million pigs were killed in the US alone. 0:03:04.290,0:03:09.210 But, if you want clicks, you have to talk [br]about what—or whom—humans care about, 0:03:09.210,0:03:13.440 which only continues to reinforce [br]the valuing of some lives over others 0:03:13.440,0:03:17.670 —further pushing into obscurity [br]the sentient beings we most exploit. 0:03:18.270,0:03:22.650 To learn about other false horse glue claims, [br]the state of horse slaughter in the US, 0:03:22.650,0:03:26.130 and what happens to unwanted horses, [br]please see the article for this video. 0:03:26.130,0:03:30.335 So, if not horses, what IS[br]glue made of? And is it vegan? 0:03:30.335,0:03:34.491 These days, most glues you'll encounter are[br]synthetic rather than animal-derived. 0:03:34.491,0:03:40.241 So yes, most glues are vegan. But animal glues and [br]glues of animal origin are still manufactured. 0:03:40.241,0:03:43.593 While you would most likely know [br]if you were purchasing hide, bone, 0:03:43.593,0:03:47.582 or fish glue in their pure form, you're more [br]likely to encounter glues made from animals 0:03:47.582,0:03:52.558 within finished products like shoes, cosmetics, [br]and musical instruments. Later on in this video, 0:03:52.558,0:03:56.483 we'll address how to tell if a product [br]is made with glues of animal origin. 0:03:56.483,0:04:00.598 The history and modern technology of [br]adhesives is more vast and complex 0:04:00.598,0:04:05.000 than I could possibly hope to cover. So, [br]without breaking YouTube with a multi-day 0:04:05.000,0:04:09.249 adhesive treatise, let's explore [br]a (very) abridged history of glue. 0:04:09.249,0:04:14.573 Glue is nothing new. Perhaps the oldest [br]evidence of glue is a plant-based birch bark adhesive 0:04:14.573,0:04:16.672 dated back to the Middle Palaeolithic period. 0:04:16.672,0:04:21.418 In fact, birch bark glue may be the first known synthetic [br]material our ancestors ever created. 0:04:21.418,0:04:26.370 Possibly the first known usage of animal [br]glue dates back to over 8,000 years ago. 0:04:26.370,0:04:30.270 Early Egyptians used a range of glues [br]of both plant and animal origin, 0:04:30.270,0:04:33.210 and the Greeks and Romans further [br]refined and developed adhesives. 0:04:33.210,0:04:37.170 Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder wrote [br]rather extensively about adhesives, 0:04:37.170,0:04:42.655 claiming that "The finest glue is made [br]from the ears and genitals of bulls." 0:04:43.710,0:04:47.670 Jumping ahead to the 1100's -[br]I did say this was an abridged history, 0:04:47.670,0:04:52.106 the pseudonymous author Theophilus, wrote [br]instructions for preparing a variety of glues, 0:04:52.106,0:04:55.946 including those from fish bladders, [br]cheese, animal skins, horns, and blood. 0:04:55.946,0:04:59.088 Fast forward to about 1690 when [br]the first commercial factory for 0:04:59.088,0:05:01.774 producing animal glue from hides was set up in Holland. 0:05:01.774,0:05:07.820 A flurry of glue patents were issued after the first [br](for fish glue) was granted in 1754 in the UK. 0:05:07.820,0:05:11.490 The first animal glue factory [br]was started in the United States in 1808, 0:05:11.490,0:05:15.944 and by 1900 there were multiple factories [br]manufacturing glue from a variety of sources. 0:05:15.944,0:05:20.137 Up until the 1920s, most adhesives were [br]either animal or plant-based in origin, 0:05:20.137,0:05:24.333 but the development of synthetic [br]polymers rapidly overtook natural glues. 0:05:24.333,0:05:28.664 However, as glues of animal origin do [br]still exist, we'll cover some of them. 0:05:28.664,0:05:31.212 Before we get into specific [br]types of animal-based glues, 0:05:31.212,0:05:36.570 I wanted to note that nothing in my research [br]has shown that animals are killed solely to make glue. 0:05:36.570,0:05:40.160 Animal glues primarily use parts [br]of animals slaughtered for their meat, 0:05:40.160,0:05:43.040 or after their bodies give out from [br]the demands of the dairy industry. 0:05:43.040,0:05:45.530 However, animal glue cannot accurately be deemed 0:05:45.530,0:05:50.240 "just a byproduct" of the meat industry.[br]With a multi-billion dollar global market value, 0:05:50.240,0:05:53.900 there's no doubt that animal glue is a [br]fully developed industry all its own. 0:05:53.900,0:05:58.040 So, animal glue—like leather—is [br]a coproduct rather than byproduct 0:05:58.040,0:06:01.160 of the meat and dairy industries. To [br]learn more about what a coproduct is, 0:06:01.160,0:06:04.880 check out my video and article "Is [br]Leather a Byproduct of the Meat Industry?" 0:06:04.880,0:06:09.860 “Animal glue” technically refers to glues [br]derived from mammalian collagen and keratin.. 0:06:09.860,0:06:14.540 The most prominent animal glues are those made [br]by extracting the collagen from animal skins, 0:06:14.540,0:06:16.561 bones and connective tissues through boiling. 0:06:16.561,0:06:22.030 Collagen is a fibrous structural protein present in the [br]extracellular matrix and connective tissue of animals. 0:06:22.030,0:06:25.340 It's sometimes referred to as [br]the "glue" that holds the body together. 0:06:25.340,0:06:28.400 Gelatin is essentially denatured collagen and is 0:06:28.400,0:06:31.520 "the purified active ingredient of any collagen-derived glue." 0:06:31.520,0:06:36.480 Hide glue—made specifically from animal skins[br]—is said to be of higher quality than bone glue. 0:06:36.480,0:06:41.900 Most hide and bone glue is produced from cows and pigs[br]slaughtered for their meat or after their bodies give out. 0:06:41.900,0:06:46.040 Rabbit skin glue is just what it [br]sounds like—glue made from rabbit skin, 0:06:46.040,0:06:48.260 though other small mammals are sometimes included. 0:06:48.260,0:06:53.570 Less widely used animal glues are those made [br]from extracting keratin—another structural protein 0:06:53.570,0:06:57.860 —by boiling hooves and horns. Hoof [br]glue is still used in some woodworking, 0:06:57.860,0:07:02.120 though it seems more smaller-scale artisan [br]woodworkers than commercial manufacturing. 0:07:02.120,0:07:04.700 Other glues of animal origin that don't fall under 0:07:04.700,0:07:09.320 the technical term "animal glue" include [br]fish, casein, shellac, and albumin glues. 0:07:09.320,0:07:13.220 Fish glue can be produced from the skin of [br]"non-oily" fish, along with their bones, 0:07:13.220,0:07:17.240 or from isinglass, a form of collagen [br]procured from the swim bladders of fish. 0:07:17.240,0:07:21.570 Isinglass is more commonly used in the fining of some wine and beer. 0:07:21.570,0:07:24.500 See my article and video [br]"Is Alcohol Vegan?" to learn more. 0:07:24.500,0:07:27.980 While Isinglass and fish glue may seem like niche products, 0:07:27.980,0:07:32.100 the impact of the global fishing industry [br]is a threat to all life on this planet. 0:07:32.100,0:07:35.000 See my mini documentary "Empty Oceans" to learn more. 0:07:35.000,0:07:37.640 Casein is a protein found within milk, 0:07:37.640,0:07:40.000 and is originally what Elmer's glue was made with. 0:07:40.000,0:07:45.980 Casein glue is what Theophilus referred to in [br]his 12th century writings as "the glue of cheese." 0:07:47.120,0:07:52.900 You may be more familiar with shellac as a finish for wood,[br]or the shiny coating on candy and some fresh fruit. 0:07:52.900,0:07:56.060 Secreted from the female lac beetle, shellac is a resin 0:07:56.060,0:08:00.620 that can also be used for adhesive purposes, [br]though its usage has declined due to its cost. 0:08:00.620,0:08:06.080 As we learned in the brief history of glue, blood [br]albumin - a protein, and egg albumen 0:08:06.080,0:08:10.520 - what we call "egg whites", have been used to make glue, [br]and may still be used in limited applications. 0:08:10.520,0:08:15.020 As I mentioned earlier, animal glue is [br]still used in some modern manufacturing. 0:08:15.020,0:08:19.520 The best way to know if a product contains [br]animal glue—or any animal-derived ingredients, 0:08:19.520,0:08:22.030 byproducts or coproducts—is to contact the company. 0:08:22.030,0:08:26.300 I will say that this can be a frustrating—if not [br]fruitless—endeavor depending on the company. 0:08:26.300,0:08:29.840 If in doubt, see if there is an alternative product that you can verify, 0:08:29.840,0:08:34.480 but don't lose yourself in tracking down [br]every adhesive in every product. 0:08:34.480,0:08:40.480 Oftentimes, the information isn't even available.[br]When it comes to necessary prescriptions that may contain gelatin, 0:08:40.480,0:08:43.520 please refer to my video and article "Is Medication Vegan?" 0:08:43.520,0:08:47.990 Overall, focus on the big things.[br]When buying actual glue, buy vegan. 0:08:47.990,0:08:51.440 These days, you kind of have to make an effort not to! 0:08:51.440,0:08:53.480 As we learned in our abridged history, 0:08:53.480,0:08:58.400 the first known glue was entirely plant-based. [br]Long before the advent of synthetic glues, 0:08:58.400,0:09:02.480 natural adhesives were made from a variety [br]of non-animal sources. While most commercial 0:09:02.480,0:09:06.560 glues are now petroleum-based, natural [br]plant-based glues are still in use today. 0:09:06.560,0:09:09.140 There is a developing interest in (re)expanding 0:09:09.140,0:09:13.040 the usage of bio-based polymers for their [br]environmental advantages over synthetics: 0:09:13.040,0:09:16.760 they're biodegradable, non-toxic, and [br]are said to have lower carbon footprints. 0:09:16.760,0:09:21.020 Starch is an inexpensive and abundant [br]natural polymeric carbohydrate found in plants. 0:09:21.020,0:09:24.240 Dextrin is simply starch that's been further processed. 0:09:24.240,0:09:29.030 For adhesives, starch is most commonly derived [br]from maize, corn, potatoes, rice, and wheat. 0:09:29.030,0:09:33.020 Starch glues are commonly referred to [br]as "paste," and are widely used in bonding paper 0:09:33.020,0:09:37.640 products as well as in textiles. Due to their [br]many advantageous attributes over synthetics, 0:09:37.640,0:09:42.020 starch and dextrin-based adhesives still [br]hold their own in a largely synthetic market. 0:09:42.020,0:09:46.160 Cellulose is "the most important skeletal [br]component in plants." In the glue-world, 0:09:46.160,0:09:49.760 cellulose adhesive is use for such applications as wallpaper, 0:09:49.760,0:09:53.480 window decals and apparently to secure the packaging of cigarettes. 0:09:53.480,0:09:58.880 Natural rubber is sourced from certain trees and plants,[br]and used primarily in pressure-sensitive adhesives. 0:09:58.880,0:10:01.220 While natural rubber is plant-derived, 0:10:01.220,0:10:05.720 there is serious concern over deforestation, [br]environmental impact, and sustainability. 0:10:05.720,0:10:11.220 As I stated early on, the world of synthetic [br]adhesive is far beyond the scope of this video. 0:10:11.220,0:10:17.550 If you really want to dive in, feel free to read one or more of the[br]multi-hundred-page textbooks in my bibliography! 0:10:17.550,0:10:21.040 At a very high-level, most synthetic glues are petroleum-based. 0:10:21.040,0:10:24.620 So while animal-free, there [br]are issues of environmental sustainability. 0:10:24.620,0:10:28.400 Synthetic glues include everything from [br]pressure-sensitive adhesives made with 0:10:28.400,0:10:33.080 synthetic rubber, to two-part epoxies, to hot [br]glue, to contact cement, and countless others. 0:10:33.080,0:10:35.300 Rather than get lost in a chemistry lesson, 0:10:35.300,0:10:38.780 let's touch on which major glue [br]types and brands are vegan. 0:10:38.780,0:10:43.040 Let's tackle the biggest one first: [br]Elmer's Glue. Elmer's glue is vegan, 0:10:43.040,0:10:48.950 though it wasn't originally. First produced by the Borden Company,[br]a conglomerate with its roots in the dairy industry, 0:10:48.950,0:10:51.500 Elmer's was casein glue - made from milk. 0:10:51.500,0:10:55.820 Despite the bull mascot on the bottle, it [br]was never made with horses, hooves, hides, 0:10:55.820,0:11:00.740 or other animal components. Elmer the bull is [br]simply the "husband" of Borden Dairy's mascot, 0:11:00.740,0:11:04.580 Elsie the cow. Modern Elmer's [br]glue is entirely synthetic. 0:11:04.580,0:11:07.100 Other common glues that are animal-free include: 0:11:07.100,0:11:12.380 Super Glue, Krazy Glue, most eyelash glues [br]- which is apparently a thing, and Gorilla Glue 0:11:12.380,0:11:17.570 —a company which actually affirmed the [br]inherent rights of animals when replying to an inquiry. 0:11:17.570,0:11:20.960 For more specifics on vegan glues,[br]check out the article for this video. 0:11:20.960,0:11:26.020 It's time to "stick" the landing of this subject [br]- couldn't help myself. 0:11:26.020,0:11:27.440 Here's the major takeaways: 0:11:27.440,0:11:32.030 The myth of horse glue is likely driven by the[br]fact that we humans care more about horses 0:11:32.030,0:11:38.700 than the cows and pigs most animal glue actually comes from. [br]When it comes to buying glue, you're likely clear of animals. 0:11:38.700,0:11:42.694 When it comes to pre-made products, [br]do your best and find alternatives if possible. 0:11:42.694,0:11:45.581 I hope this has been helpful.[br]To support educational content like this, 0:11:45.581,0:11:50.134 please consider making a donation.
