0:00:00.000,0:00:03.540 [Intro jingle] 0:00:03.540,0:00:05.960 This video is supported in part by Storyblocks. 0:00:05.960,0:00:08.620 Hello welcome to another Make Thrift Buy episode. 0:00:08.620,0:00:14.800 This is the show where you send in suggestions of mass-produced, super-expensive or just plain weird 0:00:14.800,0:00:19.260 fashion things that you found on the internet and then I try my best to recreate them. 0:00:19.260,0:00:23.460 Today's suggestion was sent in by Emily, who wanted to see me recreate these... 0:00:23.460,0:00:24.620 really... 0:00:24.620,0:00:26.380 interesting? 0:00:26.380,0:00:29.080 Yeah, we'll go with interesting - sock boots. 0:00:29.080,0:00:32.880 By the anti fashion, high fashion, meme-brand Vetements, 0:00:32.880,0:00:38.540 these sock boots featuring a unicorn heel, stick it to the man by only costing you a cool 0:00:38.540,0:00:40.160 $1500 0:00:40.160,0:00:41.740 So cheap right?! 0:00:41.740,0:00:47.000 Buuut as it turns out, the internet figured out how to recreate these sock boots for even cheaper 0:00:47.000,0:00:49.500 basically as soon as they hit the runways last year. 0:00:49.500,0:00:54.260 The Man Repeller showed just how Simple it was to DIY these back in April of 2016 - 0:00:54.260,0:00:58.020 And when Kanye West also released a line of sock boots, 0:00:58.020,0:01:01.960 an instagrammer called thenuvogue made these for a lot cheaper as well. 0:01:01.960,0:01:08.520 This DIY is so easy, simple and cost-effective, there is a bunch of people who recreated this look already. 0:01:08.520,0:01:10.720 "So Annika, why are you here then?" 0:01:10.720,0:01:12.960 "Are you here to tell us how to use Google?" 0:01:12.960,0:01:21.960 Well, no i'm not, because there's one thing that hasn't to my knowledge been the subject of any DIYs and that is the particular heel on this boot: 0:01:21.960,0:01:25.220 The unicorn heel. I may not be a huge fan of the sock boot look, 0:01:25.220,0:01:28.120 but I am pretty fond of that magical unicorn heel. 0:01:28.120,0:01:29.600 So let's get started! 0:01:29.600,0:01:31.640 Alright let's do the easy part first - 0:01:31.640,0:01:38.980 I thrifted this simple pair of black heels for $2, and I also found this pair of sports socks (I think?) for $5 at the thrift store. 0:01:38.980,0:01:43.980 The color seemed pretty similar to the original boots - I don't know who the heck AIRDS are? 0:01:43.980,0:01:47.340 My guess is that they're a random local sports team that I'll now be repping. 0:01:47.340,0:01:49.020 GOOOOO AIRDS! 0:01:49.020,0:01:53.380 I popped the shoe on and I pulled one sock over the toe of the boot pulling them on all the way. 0:01:53.380,0:01:57.980 Then I took them off because it was too hard for me to stretch the sock over the heel while i was wearing them. 0:01:57.980,0:02:01.660 So with the shoes off I stretched the socks up over the heel, 0:02:01.660,0:02:04.520 and I made sure the sock was pulled up as far as possible 0:02:04.520,0:02:08.120 and then I snipped a tiny hole with some scissors right where the heel is. 0:02:08.120,0:02:12.580 Note that the hole is much smaller than the actual heel width because socks stretch! 0:02:12.580,0:02:15.720 I stretched the sock up as far as possible around the heel 0:02:15.720,0:02:19.140 and then I cut small slits at the back and the front to widen the hole slightly 0:02:19.140,0:02:23.820 while continuing to pull the sock up, until the hole was wide enough to get to the top of the heel. 0:02:25.760,0:02:30.400 This frayed sock looks pretty bad around the edges so to make it look a little bit more schmick 0:02:30.400,0:02:34.820 I grabbed some fabric glue - I prefer this kind of glue over hot glue gun or craft glue 0:02:34.820,0:02:39.480 because it's specially made to fix fabric both to other fabrics and to basically any other surface as well. 0:02:39.480,0:02:45.920 So I painted fabric glue around the hole then I folded the raw frayed edges underneath like this all the way around the hole. 0:02:46.120,0:02:48.820 [Music] 0:02:49.060,0:02:54.040 And because these are slippery socks - and combined with high heels is just a faceplant waiting to happen - 0:02:54.040,0:02:58.440 I latticed some hot glue across the sole of the shoes and now I won't slip over when I wear them! 0:02:58.440,0:03:01.680 Other people have suggested attaching a circle of sandpaper to the bottom of the shoe - 0:03:01.680,0:03:05.000 Buut I didn't particularly wanna scratch up the wooden floors in my rental house 0:03:05.000,0:03:09.000 and it's also possible to buy these non-slip shoe pads which I think would be the perfect option 0:03:09.000,0:03:13.620 because they're specifically meant not to mark floors and stop you from falling over at the same time. 0:03:13.620,0:03:16.200 Or if you're feeling thrifty an old non-slip bath mat 0:03:16.200,0:03:19.360 or an old yoga mat cut up to the shape of the bottom of the shoe could work as well. 0:03:19.360,0:03:21.400 But anyway - now onto the unicorn heel! 0:03:21.400,0:03:27.440 So the heels on the original Vetements shoe are not only unicorn-themed but also shaped like a cigarette lighter 0:03:27.440,0:03:30.780 and I got these shoes before I realized that I wanted to make this unicorn heel 0:03:30.780,0:03:35.280 and there's no way that I'm gonna make these cone-shaped heels look anything like a cigarette lighter 0:03:35.280,0:03:38.020 but I can definitely still unicorn them up! 0:03:38.020,0:03:39.700 Also: Don't smoke, kids! 0:03:39.700,0:03:44.720 So to make this space unicorn heel a reality first I needed to make a space unicorn graphic 0:03:44.720,0:03:48.440 so I headed over to my favourite royalty-free graphics website: Storyblocks! 0:03:48.440,0:03:51.640 (Storyblocks is sponsoring this episode but all opinions are my own) 0:03:51.640,0:03:56.440 Ambitiously first I made a search for just space unicorn buuut that was a long shot - 0:03:56.440,0:03:58.540 still, this was surprisingly kind of close? 0:03:58.540,0:04:02.220 But I wanted a more active looking unicorn so I continued my search. 0:04:02.220,0:04:04.680 Anyway next i found myself a handsome looking unicorn, 0:04:04.680,0:04:07.680 some great space-scapes and a lens flare. 0:04:07.680,0:04:10.100 And then i got to work composing an image out of these 0:04:10.100,0:04:14.660 [Funky music] 0:04:14.660,0:04:20.160 Now if you did have shoes with rectangular block heels and you wanted to turn it into a cigarette lighter - 0:04:20.160,0:04:21.820 (But remember: Don't smoke, kids!) 0:04:21.820,0:04:23.720 You would want to make an image that looks like this - 0:04:23.720,0:04:25.060 print out two - 0:04:25.060,0:04:26.740 And then wrap it around the heel. 0:04:26.740,0:04:31.260 And in case anyone wants to recreate this heel, I have made this image available to download on my website 0:04:31.260,0:04:33.920 just resize it to roughly your own heel's measurements. 0:04:33.920,0:04:36.700 Buuut I like to make things unnecessarily complicated for myself 0:04:36.700,0:04:39.940 and I have this more complicated shaped heel to work with, 0:04:39.940,0:04:44.540 so I made a bunch of measurements and calculations With the heel and I ended up with a heel design that looks like this. 0:04:44.540,0:04:47.340 This will be the inside of the heel and this the outside. 0:04:47.340,0:04:49.260 The unicorns will be visible from the back. 0:04:49.260,0:04:53.440 I did leave the lighter part up the top here just to see what it would look like just in case, 0:04:53.440,0:04:57.420 but i will be getting rid of that later because nobody owns a lighter that's shaped like this. 0:04:57.420,0:04:59.000 (Don't smoke ki - ) 0:04:59.000,0:05:02.540 Before printing them out i also increase the height and width of the heels by 10% 0:05:02.540,0:05:04.640 to make sure that I'd have enough of the print to work with, 0:05:04.640,0:05:07.760 and I printed out some extra space scenery too just in case. 0:05:07.760,0:05:12.920 I printed these out onto Lesley Riley's Transfer Artist Paper Which is material transfer paper 0:05:12.920,0:05:14.480 and then I cut these pieces out. 0:05:14.480,0:05:18.900 Next I'm going to transfer them to leftover scraps that I had of this canvas material. 0:05:18.900,0:05:23.940 To transfer the images to the fabric I covered them with some silk organza to prevent the fabric burning 0:05:23.940,0:05:26.720 and I pressed down on them hard at maximum heat setting 0:05:26.720,0:05:29.660 no steam for 20 to 30 seconds, which transferred the design 0:05:29.660,0:05:30.660 and then I cut them out. 0:05:30.660,0:05:34.720 To apply the design to the shoe, first I covered the inner heel with fabric glue 0:05:34.720,0:05:37.280 and I pressed the inner heel design down onto it. 0:05:37.280,0:05:40.260 Where the fabric overhung the heel I made small incisions in the fabric 0:05:40.260,0:05:42.680 and I pasted them down to the sides of the heel like this. 0:05:42.680,0:05:47.280 Buuut with the outside heel I realized that I hadn't accounted for the curvature 0:05:47.280,0:05:50.280 of the heel which left a gap in the side here. 0:05:50.280,0:05:54.540 So then I figured out the actual shape that it would be when it's laid flat by draping 0:05:54.540,0:05:56.220 bits of fabric down onto the heel, 0:05:56.220,0:05:57.840 tracing around them with some pen, 0:05:57.840,0:06:02.720 adding more pieces of fabric to this template with glue until I had this. 0:06:02.720,0:06:07.320 And this is the actual shape of the outside heel when it's laid down flat. 0:06:07.320,0:06:10.340 So back in photoshop i made a shape like this: 0:06:10.340,0:06:15.740 the reason it's not curvy here is that I just wanted to make sure I had enough space-scape to work with, 0:06:15.740,0:06:20.460 and I printed it out again and I used the template from before to cut it to the right shape. 0:06:20.460,0:06:23.460 After transferring each design to canvas again 0:06:23.460,0:06:26.740 I painted the outside heel with fabric glue and I carefully wrapped 0:06:26.740,0:06:29.140 the space unicorn design around the heel. 0:06:29.140,0:06:31.460 This was a little bit tricky but with lots of adjusting 0:06:31.460,0:06:35.020 and by cutting small slits in the edges of the curves of the fabric 0:06:35.020,0:06:37.260 I was able to lay it down onto the heel smoothly. 0:06:37.260,0:06:40.960 And then I cut off the excess bits with my tiny pair of embroidery scissors. 0:06:40.960,0:06:44.529 While I was doing this I realized that it would have looked a little bit neater 0:06:44.529,0:06:48.820 around the top of the design if I had done the heels first and then put the socks on afterwards, 0:06:48.820,0:06:53.400 but I think that seeing as I was making this all up on the spot it turned out pretty good. 0:06:53.400,0:06:56.540 Lastly, I wanted to seal the design and make it last a bit longer 0:06:56.540,0:06:59.140 so I grabbed this water based sealant Mod Podge 0:06:59.140,0:07:02.660 and I painted a thin layer over the top of the unicorn heels. 0:07:02.660,0:07:04.220 This makes them more weatherproof - 0:07:04.220,0:07:07.840 not that sock boots are ever going to be a good idea to wear while splashing around in puddles, 0:07:07.840,0:07:10.680 and it also gives the heels a subtly shiny finish. 0:07:10.680,0:07:14.860 So that's it! I'm done. Question is: "how did I go?" 0:07:14.860,0:07:20.000 [Electro swing music] 0:07:30.040,0:07:35.380 Yeah so I'll admit that the shoes still haven't totally won me over. 0:07:35.380,0:07:37.740 I was also having a little bit of trouble styling them - 0:07:37.740,0:07:40.800 at first I thought I'd try and keep it simple by pairing them with a little black dress... 0:07:40.800,0:07:42.880 but that didn't really work for me. 0:07:42.880,0:07:47.340 So then I thought, why not go all out and make a matching space unicorn t-shirt 0:07:47.340,0:07:49.920 and wear a beret that perfectly matches the color of the socks? 0:07:49.920,0:07:51.700 Maybe..? Yeah! 0:07:51.700,0:08:00.120 NOW I’ve got that ironically self-conscious I’m-so-street-fashion don’t-care-what-I-wear might-as-well-have-DIY’d-it-I’m-so-anti-establishment-but-I-paid-$1500-for-this Vetements LOOK 0:08:00.120,0:08:04.620 - except that we did make these for [br]ourselves. For about ten bucks 0:08:04.620,0:08:08.280 So I guess we've come full circle? 0:08:08.280,0:08:13.020 Or maybe Vetememes already has that one covered.[br]I don't even know anymore... [sigh] 0:08:13.020,0:08:16.480 …All of that is moot anyway because I can’t walk in heels for the life of me. 0:08:16.480,0:08:20.300 But at the very least, it was all worth it to end up with this unicorn t-shirt 0:08:20.300,0:08:24.680 which I AM very fond of and I'm wearing as I record this voice-over. 0:08:24.680,0:08:28.380 And as for the shoes… well… I learned a lot from upcycling them? 0:08:28.380,0:08:30.500 I can always chalk them up to DIY-experience? 0:08:30.500,0:08:33.020 But who knows. Maybe one day I’ll be invited to a fashion week 0:08:33.020,0:08:39.960 and then I can blow everyone’s minds with these babies and how effortlessly ironically anti-fashion I am. 0:08:39.960,0:08:48.440 Sooo.... what do you all think about this whole “super-ironic anti-luxury-dress-like-a-poor-person-but-only-if-you-have-thousands-of-dollars” trend? 0:08:48.440,0:08:54.420 Is it a clever bite at capitalism and consumerism, OR does it accomplish exactly what it claims to be against? 0:08:54.420,0:08:56.540 Is that the point of it?[br]Are they trolling us all? 0:08:56.540,0:08:58.500 Do I just not get it?[br]Is there anything to get? 0:08:58.500,0:09:02.720 I know you're all smart cookies so I'd really like to see some discussion down in the comments below. 0:09:02.720,0:09:06.220 Okay. So apart from sending me into a bit of an existential crisis, 0:09:06.220,0:09:09.560 obviously this episode wasn’t a super serious Make Thrift Buy recreation, 0:09:09.560,0:09:15.580 but I think that I did a pretty good job of recreating these nonetheless, so I’m gonna call this a: 0:09:15.580,0:09:17.100 [scissor sound, zipping sound] 0:09:17.100,0:09:21.080 Yeah, and if you do wanna make these but you don’t want to do an outrageous unicorn heel 0:09:21.080,0:09:26.540 then sock boots take literally about 5 minutes to make for yourself, with a pair of socks (sports socks or otherwise), 0:09:26.540,0:09:29.420 a pair of high-heels, scissors and some fabric glue. 0:09:29.420,0:09:33.260 I actually think if you don't spend thousands of dollars on them they can look pretty cool - 0:09:33.260,0:09:35.960 but bonus points for adding a whacky design to the heel as well. 0:09:35.960,0:09:38.720 Obviously, there’s some things which are done slightly better in the original - 0:09:38.720,0:09:42.160 I mean, you’d hope so, for one-and-a-half-thousand dollars - 0:09:42.160,0:09:47.760 It has proper soles, for instance, and so it is overall probably a little more weather-proof than mine. 0:09:47.760,0:09:50.660 I mean a little... Both are still… socks 0:09:50.660,0:09:55.300 But if we’re looking at this solely from a cost-effectiveness point of view… I think that my boots win. 0:09:55.300,0:10:01.040 And they certainly have that DIY shabby chic appeal... (cause they're actually DIY). 0:10:01.040,0:10:03.560 Plus with this green pair being out of stock anyway, 0:10:03.560,0:10:06.220 even if you did have a spare couple of thousand to blow, 0:10:06.220,0:10:09.900 making them for yourself is probably your best bet to get your hands on them. 0:10:09.900,0:10:12.460 This video is sponsored by Storyblocks! 0:10:12.460,0:10:17.760 Storyblocks provides high-quality photos, vectors, icons and more that are all royalty and copyright free, 0:10:17.760,0:10:20.540 so you can use them in anything that you want! 0:10:20.540,0:10:24.260 Seriously, they are a really useful service if you work for or run a business 0:10:24.260,0:10:25.980 that has any graphic design component, 0:10:25.980,0:10:28.960 if you run a website, or a youtube channel! 0:10:28.960,0:10:33.100 I personally use them a lot, in my videos, my end-cards, on Instagram, 0:10:33.100,0:10:35.800 and even in things like t-shirt designs as well. 0:10:35.800,0:10:40.760 When you’re signed up, you can download and keep any of the 400,000 images in the Member Library, 0:10:40.760,0:10:42.860 AND they also have a new Marketplace! 0:10:42.860,0:10:46.080 In the marketplace designers and artists license their images. 0:10:46.080,0:10:49.520 Not only does this help artists sell their work, but being a Storyblocks Member 0:10:49.520,0:10:52.920 will give you 60% off any of these, if you want to use them for yourself. 0:10:52.920,0:10:58.720 Storyblocks is giving away a 7-day free day trial through my promo link, so that you can try it out for yourself! 0:10:58.720,0:11:02.520 So click on the link in the description box below to start downloading images today! 0:11:02.520,0:11:04.880 Thank you so much to Storyblocks for sponsoring this video! 0:11:04.880,0:11:08.040 And thank you to all of YOU for supporting the companies that support this channel! 0:11:08.040,0:11:12.220 Anyway, that’s it for this episode – I’ll see you all in my next video![br]Bye! 0:11:12.220,0:11:16.060 Thank you to all of my supporters on Patreon for making this video possible. 0:11:16.060,0:11:21.360 To become my supporter go to patreon.com/annikavictoria 0:11:21.360,0:11:35.000 [Outro jingle]
